This was our first workaway trip and it was an awesome experience that made a big impact on us.
TL;DR: Highly recommended hosts for a mix of good food, options for conversation about interesting ideas, experiencing a different approach to farming/life, and flexibility in the work and contributions. Plus a great location and community to visit

Why this worked so well for us:
From the stories we heard the origin of this farm experience for Brian and Nicole is food - being more connected to growing and harvesting, experimenting with it (cheese making!), pulling in interesting traditional approaches and observations. They _claim_ the food is humble but I think it is just because they are used to excellent food ;-) for us it was delicious and as a bonus we felt better as we ate better.
Adjacent to the food was the connection and discussion - a big family, sometimes work away guests, and long and hearty meals nice and late in the evening is fertile ground for conversations and stories. And even the work was well set up for chatting about life or ideas, or nothing much. I appreciated the conversations with Brian and Nicole and the other workaway-ers who had authentically different experiences and ideas but it was relaxed and open - a chill but interesting vibe.
For me the type of work also really worked out - a variety of tasks, some interesting new building projects, some everyday chores and some seasonal work (clearing barns) were all available. And they tried to respond to people's interests and the contributions (gifts!) people were most able and interested to make. This worked really well for me coming off a higher stress tech job and wanting to do something more tangible - but the variety is available for a wide range of contributions.
Brian and Nicole and the family included us and introduced us as we were interested in wider parts of the community. We have actually stayed connected to them and to the community.
I highly recommend a workaway visit to the farm!Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

It’s hard to express how special my 3 week experience with Nicole, Brian, and their family was. They were extremely kind, generous, positive, and outside-of-the-box thinkers. Going into their farm and family was unlike anything I’d experienced before. There is an amazing balance of hard work and enjoying the results of the hard work on the farm.
… read more When I was there, Nicole was attending a cheese-making course most of the first week, so Brian patiently taught me most of the ropes. I loved working with Nicole, too, as she introduced me to ALL KINDS of milk-culturing methods. My experience with the family was the ultimate crash course on living off the land, how important the symbiotic relationship is between humans>animals>land, and learning to fulfill modern needs in natural and simplistic ways (but they weren’t “woowoo”). Every meal we ate felt sacred even if our experimental recipes flopped - either we covered it in freshly made butter or (if it flopped bad enough) it was “turned into bacon” (aka given to the pigs to munch on). To thrive at this farm you need to be self-motivated, adaptable, contributive, EAT ANIMAL PRODUCTS, and love being a home body. I didn’t go out a ton, but whenever the family went to a community event I was more than welcome (but there wasn’t too many community events going on at the time). There is plenty of nature to explore, a pretty ATV trail to traverse, and a nice town about an hour walk away. I loved my conversations with Brian and Nicole, since they have so much to impart, but also love to hear other opinions and experiences! I could go on and on… but just know this is an extra special place!Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

Nicole & Brian were fantastic hosts and are kind-hearted, generous people who make you feel apart of the family & life on the farm. The food is great with the majority of it coming from the farm. You'll eat tasty, healthy meals and the meals are a fun time for trying the latest experiment from the dairy and sharing good conversation & a few

There's lots of projects to work on and things to learn...I had less to do with cheese making and the cows, chickens, and horses but would be great place to learn more about this if it's your interest, plus had fun helping get rocks for rock wall, building hay stacks the old way, some building, painting, shovelling manure, mowing, and a few other bits. Always stuff to do.
All in all a very laid-back and big, beautiful place to be with no solid work schedule and plenty of time to do what appeals to you.
Would recommend as a great place to stay in Nova Scotia.Feedback
