    Description

    Hello!

My family farm in Argentina is a place that is very dear to me, and I am working on its transition to sustainable agricultural and ranching systems. We welcome helping hands to help with the project accompanying us in the joy of this transformation.

We are looking for Workawayers to help us promote native wildlife, making it possible to protect nature as we produce grains and raise cattle. We are part of the Grassland Alliance (Alianza del Pastizal) and other conservation initiatives by the private sector.

    NEXT PROJECTS for workawayers:

In December we need a hand with maintenance of our native vegetation corridor, tree groves and nursery, and also general gardening and occasional house and pet sitting. A couple, or two friends, would be ideal for this month.

January to March we will also be collecting native grass seeds, and one or two people will be most welcome.

We offer food and accommodations and hopefully, an enjoyable experience for workawayers.

    General Information:

I was born in Argentina and grew up in Toronto, Canada and a few years in Ecuador. I studied in Toronto (UofT) and in the US (UC Berkeley). I also lived in Paris for a short while.

My professional background is in environment and sustainable development. I left consulting to manage and take care of my farm.

We have quite a big garden to take care of, plus a native vegetation corridor, a vegetable garden, and recently planted young native trees .

The house, buildings and infrastructure are about 110 years old, need work, order, small repairs, and we have a lot of animals to take care of. Sometimes we go into town and also count on workawayers to housesit for a couple of days.

The work and setting will most likely be pleasurable for workawayers who like the countryside, nature, have environmental concerns, do not mind getting up to work on a chilly morning or early in the summer to avoid the heat, and are not freaked out by animals or insects (although we know of none that are dangerous). We ask for 5 hours Monday to Friday and 2.5 on Saturday mornings.

In general, our workawayers can expect to do some basic home and garden chores, such as watering plants, weeding, moving debris and chopping and bringing in the firewood (winter), feeding pets and horses, winterizing wood, small painting jobs, helping organize and tidy up the barns and other buildings, pruning, tree planting, composting and the like. Specific tasks for the coming "campaign" can be found above in the introduction.

My husband and I also like sharing our lifestyle and some of our local culture, and enjoy the process of learning from each other with our workawayers. We hope to offer an inspiring and pleasant personal experience.

ACCOMMODATION: The house and buildings are about 110 years old and we are gradually renovating and fixing them up. Workawayers can expect rustic comfort (clean room and sheets, warm room and bath, hearty meals, wifi), but not luxury :-). The unit workawayers stay at is a few meters from the main house and can accommodate a couple or a single workawayer. The bathroom is shared.

HOURS: We ask for 5 hours per day in Summer Monday to Friday and 2.5 hours on Saturdays. The rest of the time workawayers can use our pool, rest in our garden or go sightseeing. We can accommodate the hours if workawayers staying more than two weeks wish to go away for a few days in the middle of the stay.

FOOD: Workawayers are offered the same food we eat. We can accommodate vegetarians and workawayers who need to have gluten free diets. We are happy to take workawayers to the grocery store if they have special tastes or wish to have foodstuffs we don't provide, so they can get the goodies they want for themselves.

LOCATION: We are fairly close to Buenos Aires, it takes less than two hours to get from Buenos Aires to our farm by car. By bus, you have to go to the town of Lobos, and we pick you from there. That will take three hours from start to finish.

MOVING ON YOUR OWN: Because it is a rural area, if you want do some independent sightseeing, you have to combine a ride with us with local buses, unless you have your own transportation. We are happy to take you into town when we go. We also enjoy taking our workawayers to local fairs and activities we participate in.

Lastly, a kind reminder to workawayers to travel with health insurance.

They could learn about the multiple tasks there are on a farm, and especially those associated with living on a farm, also about how farming is done in our region, the challenges of transitioning to more sustainable living as well as producing, about restoring the natural habitat and creating a native vegetation corridor. They can gain experience in gardening, native plant repopulation, and caring for dogs and cats, and may learn a bit about cows.

They can also learn about gauchos traditions, making asado (Argentine barbecue), playing the classical card game truco and everything traditional from my husband Martin.

The workawayers can get to know the area, with its potpourri of sights, peoples and activities: the small town nearby, the local artisans and crafts-people, gaucho festivals, the natural lake and wetlands with all their wildlife. We try to accommodate ways in which our workawayers can enjoy these experiences, like taking them with us when we go ourselves or when we go into town, or picking them up at the nearby bus stop, etc.

Our next project with workawayers are:

December : gardening and maintenance of our native vegetation corridor, native tree groves and nursery, and also occasional house and pet sitting. A couple, or two friends, would be ideal for this month.

January to March: Collecting native grass seeds. We need to eliminate an invasive exotic grass that is making our cows sick and displacing native grasses, so we are making a seed bank.

We offer food and accommodations and hopefully, an enjoyable experience for workawayers.

Since it is a rural area , we have dogs, cats, and there is bee-keeping in our farm, it may not be a suitable setting for people prone to allergies or fearful of animals.

The workaway unit is about 15 meters from the main house, so it may not be suitable for those fearful of the sounds of the countryside at night.

Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions. We accommodate special dietary needs, but cannot accommodate personal tastes in food and drink different from what we have to offer. If a workawayer is used to consuming certain foods that we don't have or more than we make available, we are happy to take them into town so they can get what they like.

In their time off, helpers enjoy the setting: They can take walks, relax or sun bathe after a good day's work in our garden, by our pool or by the fireplace (depending on the season), or reading a good book from our library. We also try to facilitate ways they can enjoy the surrounding area.

We are happy to be reasonably flexible with the work, so that workawayers can hitch a ride with us when we go into town or take a couple of days off when the stays are longer than two weeks. We also drive them to the nearby town/bus if they want to sight see or go out on their own.

There is a good wifi connection but not sufficient for people who need bandwidth, speed and 100% reliability. It is for people who send emails and documents, and do some searching and reading online. Sporadic and usually short power cuts can occur.
