I’ve been traveling for over a year and a half and have done 18 workaways all over the world, but my one month here back in the spring of 2023 remains my favorite experience. Living in a house where you share a single bathroom with 9 other volunteers sounds like it should be a nightmare, but it was actually one of the most fun and enriching
… read more experiences of my adult life. I simply had a blast. The community in the house was wonderful, formed by people from different countries/ages/lifestyles, and I was able to make some lasting friendships. Safia and Ian were brilliant hosts, both welcoming and chill with a great sense of humor. Skye, their pup, was a cutie, and their pizzas were also a real treat (it was a big bonus to learn how to make them!).
As for the work, it didn’t feel much like work at all. We helped kids bring their artistic ideas to life in the workshop and did a little creative work of our own, making activities for parties and decorating the window display. There were sometimes also random cool things around town: we facilitated a DIY fashion show at a community event, and I got to help a local man try to build a clay pizza oven, for example. It was a special time, all good vibes doing enjoyable work in a great community. Thank you again for everything!Laissé par l'hôte pour le workawayer (Rachel)

Thank you!

What should I say? Helping in the Workshop is really a magical experience. The kids, the other workawayers, Safia, Ian.. everyone brightens up the day and helping with them is much fun.

We had many birthdays to prepare for, a lot of school visits and also many drop-offs to take care of. I loved spending time with the kids and creating something with them while they had fun and enjoyed the activities. But to be honest the thing I miss the most is Skye, the dog of Ian and Safia. With her playful personality, she loves to play with the ball.
Safia’s cooking, the free pizzas on Sundays.. everything tasted SO good.
During my stay I experienced many different constellations of people and that’s why I can say that living with 7-9 people was quite an experience. Most of them were the loveliest, heartwarming, kindest and funniest people I have met in my life. The only thing I struggled with is to live with so many different people that all had different standards of cleanliness and hygiene.Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

Maikel and Jeremy and two of the most generous, kind and hard-working volunteers we have ever hosted. It was an absolutely pleasure to spend time with them. I was welcomed by Safia and Ian during my 2 months of volunteering, and in the first week, I felt at home. Even though I had been traveling for a few months, it was the first time I felt at home sharing the house with other volunteers.
My work consisted of three tasks: walking with Sky (the cutest dog in the world - already missing her), cleaning

The workshop itself is a brilliant idea. I can see the impact that the project has on the town. It's a place where we help children be creative and think outside the box, sometimes with the participation of their parents. It's always incredible how a child's imagination can create something truly amazing with simple materials when encouraged.
Safia is a very honest person when it comes to volunteering, with very clear and objective communication. She is inspiring me to create a similar project in my country.
The interaction and experience with other volunteers were one of my biggest surprises. You learn to live with cultural differences quickly, as everyone has their own way, and everyone makes a point of making you feel welcome. I ate delicious food and exchanged experiences that I will carry with me for life. I feel that my horizons have expanded in a way that I cannot explain.
My focus on volunteering was to practice as much English as possible, and Safia helped me a lot during the process, even connecting me with Margaret, an elderly lady who enjoys talking with volunteers in English. I cannot thank her enough. I felt that during my 2 months, it was an intensive experience of things that I could not experience elsewhere. I made so many friends that I cannot count. I cried like a baby when I said goodbye.
Thank you very much for the opportunity to experience all of this. I highly recommend this volunteering.Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

My experience at Safia and Ian’s volunteer program has been a delightful moment and the best first impression with workaway.
From the start, I was warmly welcomed by the other volunteers and quickly introduced to the roles and interesting spots around town, the environment and warmth in the house immediately made me feel like in home.
The next
… read more day I was asked about how I would have liked to work and had the opportunity to both help on maintenance and with the activities in the workshop. In both cases I had a great time contributing and learning how to do more things as well as sharing a bit of my own experience. My work in maintenance consisted mostly on painting the doors and walls, but also had the opportunity to learn a bit about using the coffee machine with another volunteer; as in the workshop I had the opportunity to help on the various events that took place during my stay, mostly supporting children to create their own art projects with recyclable materials.
Another great addition to this wonderful volunteer is the cooking in both the workshop (amazing dishes provided by the hosts) and the opportunity to share the kitchen with the other volunteers to try different meals from their own home.
During my breaks I also had the chance to explore the beautiful town and to learn more about the lifestyle here in England and meeting the locals.
I feel lucky to be allowed to contribute in this volunteer project as I created fulfilling memories and everlasting friendships, I really wished I had the opportunity to be there for more time as its a great place for people looking to learn new things, sharing their own culture with other volunteers and enjoying one of the most beautiful parts of England; it has been an enriching and unforgiving experience for me and I hope to have the opportunity to meet Safia and Ian again in the future.

My experience there, hosted by Safia and Ian in Wincanton, was truly enriching. For anyone seeking an opportunity to connect with people from around the world, engage in creative activities with children, and improve their English communication skills, this is the ideal destination. In the following sections, I will provide a concise overview of
… read more the work, accommodation, and location of this Workaway site.
Work: The work commitment is 25 hours per week in exchange for food (including breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and accommodation, a fair arrangement. Safia's delicious lunches on workdays and Sunday pizza nights were particularly enjoyable. The main tasks at the workshop involve preparing, facilitating, and tidying up after various craft projects. These projects range from children's birthday parties and school activities to individual creative sessions. Initially, I was surprised by the amount of time spent on preparation, including gathering and assembling materials for the projects. I had underestimated the workload involved in preparing for the actual sessions. During the sessions, you mainly provide support in the background, allowing children or adults to unleash their creativity with some guidance and materials. After each session, you are responsible for tidying up and returning materials to their designated places, which can be challenging given the assortment of drawers and containers. If you're a coffee enthusiast, you'll be delighted by the excellent coffee machine there.
Housing: The accommodation for Workawayers is a mere 3-minute walk from the workshop. Workawayers share a kitchen equipped with essential cooking appliances and a room with 2 or 3 other people. Additionally, there is a spacious garden, porch, and common hallway for relaxation. A variety of board games are available, fostering interactions among fellow Workawayers. As the apartment has accommodated a remarkable 700 Workawayers in recent years, I initially had to adjust my hygiene standards, although there is a cleaning schedule in place. Cleanliness largely depends on the individuals you share the space with, making each experience unique. Naturally, wear and tear can occur with such a high turnover of residents. However, when I raised concerns about mold in my room with Safia, she promptly organized a deep cleaning day instead of a typical workday at the workshop. It's worth noting that the housing situation is expected to change, as Safia and Ian plan to vacate their flat directly above the project's place to make room for additional Workawayers.
Location: Wincanton is a charming small town in Somerset, about a 2-hour drive west of London. Within walking distance, you'll find cozy cafes, pubs, a park, and supermarkets. The leisure center offers a swimming pool, and there are gyms for those interested in staying active. While you can explore the surrounding area on foot, be aware that there are limited pedestrian walkways, so you may need to walk alongside cars or on grassy areas. On your day off, you can easily plan day trips to nearby cities like Bath, Bristol, or Frome using public transportation. Safia and Ian have been kind enough to provide lifts to the nearest train station in Bruton for some Workawayers.
In conclusion, my stay was immensely enjoyable, and I wholeheartedly recommend this Workaway experience to others.Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

The kids in the UK, by the way, are SO polite!
I have to give a special shout out to the very amazing Zsofia, who was the fearless leader of our group while Safia was away. Zsofia is the type of leader you would want in charge of any group. She is calm, easy going, kind and fun, but also organized and effective. The work in the workshop is enjoyable and rewarding, even on the busiest days there is always a way to joke and have fun with the other volunteers. If you are a person who loves art and crafts you will love this work! Unfortunately, due to my not too good immune system, it happened twice that I got sick but Safia and Ian always helped me as if they were my parents. Their sense of community and kindness are truly inspiring, they are the kind of people who, through their actions, manage to make society a better place.
Wincanton is a small and friendly town, there you can find supermarkets, pubs and a few nice cafes. You can also find a bus service to the nearest train station.
Although the house may initially seem a little small to you, wait before you judge. It is equipped with everything you need to live well. But the best thing you will find there are the people. The volunteering is a lot of fun, and never felt like too much. Other days, if there was nothing to do, instead of busywork we were allowed to leave, and we’d go have picnics or paper plane competitions.
Wincanton is a lovely little town; not too overwhelming like a big city, but not isolated like a farm. Safia knows some good walking routes, and I came across a few trails just wandering around. There’s a couple groceries, pubs, and cafes within a few minutes walk from the house, though we rarely went to cafes because the restaurant has a fancy coffee machine!
In addition to working with the kids, ai got to learn all kinds of random skills, like pizza making, cappuccino making, wood chopping, face painting and more.

the work structure was quite easy (i had been used to doing more on other ones) so a fair amount of spare time... the set up in the volunteer house worked well , and the 1 night a week when they treated us to the best pizza outside Italy , was something we all looked forward to...

I could have never imagined that in such a small town an incredibly huge world was to be found and that it was going to be such an amazing experience! Since I arrived I was received with a very warm, human and sincere approach from Safia and Ian. Both are brilliant human beings. They are so inspiring, strong, mature, wise, respectful, honest, creative and crazy! With both feet on earth they guide us to create a world and space where creativity and imagination could flow. They treat all of us equally with a lot of care and equanimity. They have big and good hearts, they care about the others, they are compassionate and are always looking to help with skilful means.
We (all volunteers) stayed in a separate house where we shared everything, the goal was to be a team, and it became a family! In regard to food, wow, I appreciate a lot all the care. I was nervous because I was eating vegan, but the love was there and the support too. All that Safia cooked (which was so delicious) and all we made in the house was made considering everyone. All of us had something to eat, and it was very harmonious! I am very thankful! I always appreciate all the food I receive, but here every meal was made with such love that made me appreciate it even more!
The work was really fair, and what is so special about this experience are Safia's skillfull means. She could identify our strengths, tastes, weaknesses and talents, and she adapted the work to our abilities. In result, everyone was making great things and enjoying it so much! I was giving many tasks that had to do with painting, creating new crafts and ideas, organizing, decorating, making web design and obviously working with the visitors (kids and adults) in the workshop helping them to expand their creativity, confidence and imagination. I enjoyed everything! Specially painting! When I arrived I felt that I had ignored my artistic side for so long, that I could not paint any more. I am so happy to say that thanks to this experience I could make peace with that side and my artistic part exploded again! I feel more alive, happy and so grateful!! Thanks for giving me the chance!!
I want to go back and retribute more! They are already making such a huge impact on many lives, and they have all the impulse to go further and help more! Incredible humans.
Thank you so much Safia and Ian for what you are doing! For opening your hearts to me, for receiving me, for your kindness, honesty, equanimity and for sharing! I loved hearing all your stories and laughing so much! Both of you are doing it right because you are following your hearts and that is the most inspiring thing!
I hope to find you again in the future. Well, as altruism is already so rooted in our mind and motivations, I am sure we will!
My warmest regards,
Karin

The one thing I’ll say about this Workaway experience which was so difference from the rest for me is the the number of helpers. It’s unusual to have 6+ helpers with one host. It’s not for everyone, but as a very independent person who loves her own space, I’d still recommend it. Living with the other workawayers worked great for me too, we spent a lot of time together and we experienced so many great things.
Maybe the only (and really only) negative thing I could say is that I spent some quite cold months there and the house where the workawayers live is maybe better in warmer months (especially cold showers were a problem). I was at here way back in September and havnt had the chance to give my feedback yet (sorry safia and Ian)
But I must not let the chance pass as I want to share my thoughts as it was such a wonderful place.
Safia and Ian are the most friendly and welcoming people I have met on my journey so far. They are genuinely interested in each person that

I was lucky enough to work both in the workshop and help to tame the very wild garden in the house that they provide for workaway to live in. When I was not working in the workshop and in the garden they always made sure I had lunch.
Living in the house with the other workaways is something I really valued. There is such a mixture of people you can't help but to make friends, you never have a chance to feel lonely. It's also great as you can organise trips with people on your days off.
I went to wincanton with only a gardening background but safia took a chance on me and believed in me and let me work alongside everyone else in the workshop. Which was totally out of my comfort zone. So thank you safia for giving me this chance, I loved it.
The workshop is such a great idea. Taking recycling to the next level. You can't help but feel inspired and creative when you are there.
The thing I found the most wonderful was the way safia and Ian made every person who made something there feel like they had made the most wonderful piece of art they had ever seen. You could see people leaving feeling really proud of themselves. This is a special talent to have.

Jack spent almost three months with us in Somerset and we found him to be a perfect workawayer and a great house guest. Very easy to get along with, quick on the uptake, hard-working and no trouble at all. We wish him all the best for 2015 and beyond! Safia and Ian

Safia and Ian were amazing hosts, they are well-travelled, great to talk to and were really easy to get on with. The work was varied, the cottage felt like a home from the start and I really recommend joining up with Safia and Ian for a great workaway experience. Nabeel.

We were all delighted to meet Nabeel at our place in Brittany, France. He worked really hard, even in the wind and rain! And got on very well with other helpers. He was enthusiastic at all times. We would recommend him to any other hosts worldwide and expect him to have some great travels ahead. Safia and Ian.
