  • Description

    Description

I am doing post-graduate school research on the Mayan hiatus following the climate catastrophe of the mid-sixth century (the eruption of the caldera at Ilopango). Previous research has brought me to Yucatán, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras. This final research trip will focus on archaeological ruins in eastern Mexico. We will explore the architecture and ritual technology associated with Classic Mayan civilization. We will visit centers of scientific investigation, museums, and national archives (if they are not closed because of COVID). We will also meet with academics at local universities and research centers that have samples of the "natural archives" (tree rings, speleothems, and pollen samples) that can be later analyzed to understand paleo-climate.

The research will also focus on indicators of climate change in Mayan architecture. The research collected will be used in academic publications, a novel, and possibly a film. I have just completed a trilogy on a historical fiction account that illustrates the role of climate change and pandemics in the decline of Roman civilization.

This would be a good fit for anyone wanting to increase their knowledge about the impact of climate change on human history, particularly the Mayans. There will be regular interactions with the local population at archaeological sites and other public venues.

I am looking for an assistant to assist in an environmental research project in fall 2022. The candidate will help with navigation on treacherous roads (with spotty GPS coverage, dated maps, and sketchy signage), translation and interpretation from Spanish to English, and photo-documentation of archaeological sites in Teotihuacan, Tenochtitlan, Comalcalco, Xicalango, and Palenque, Mexico.

The candidate will work with archivists and historians on Mayan culture seeking to understand the role of abrupt climate change on Mayan civilization. Special consideration will be given to candidates who have read recommended reading like Michael Coe's "The Maya," John Brooke's "Climate Change and the Course of Global History," and H.H. Lamb's "Climate, History, and the Modern World." The host is willing to assist in getting the applicant up to speed on the subject through recommended journal articles.

The workawayer should have previous experience in photography, photo-journalism, and posting on various social media. There may be some minor note-taking involved. The host is looking for assistance in editing/blacksmithing a book during downtime. Ecotourism opportunities, hiking, and spelunking are built into the trip. The candidate should bring a broken-in pair of quality hiking boots and be fit enough to hike to the summit of Mayan temples and through mountainous forest trails (5-10km per day). Knowledge of basic first aid would be a plus.

He/she should be a good conversationalist, have a sense of humor, be flexible, open-minded, not averse to challenging weather, willing to engage in local activities, and generally adventurous. Smartphone junkies need not apply. Helping hours coincide with hours of operations at archaeological sites, universities, research centers, and museums.

A basic stipend and final bonus can be negotiated based on the workawayer's knowledge, experience, contribution, and performance.
