Description
Hi, I’m Luke!
What really drives me is living simply and fully; close to nature, connected to people, and always open to new experiences. I’ve learned that my happiest moments come from the basics: surfing at sunrise, sharing stories around a table, and discovering new ways of life through the cultures I meet.
I grew up in England, but over the years, I’ve chosen a path that allows me to move lightly and explore widely. I love immersing myself in new places, picking up local traditions, and expanding my horizons with each journey. For me, it’s not about “checking destinations off a list”; it’s about slowing down, being present, and really connecting with the communities I’m part of, even if only for a short time.
I have a mix of creative and practical sides: I’m a music composer, but I also enjoy rolling up my sleeves, helping out, and learning hands-on skills. I find joy in contributing to meaningful projects, whether that’s something artistic, cultural, or outdoors.
Above all, what motivates me is connection. With people, with nature, and with new ideas. I see Workaway as a chance not only to share who I am, but to grow into someone new through each experience.
--------
Hello, I'm Maricel!
What motivates me most in life is living close to nature and finding joy in its simple rhythms. I feel happiest when I’m outdoors - surfing with the waves, climbing mountains, free diving beneath the sea, or swimming under the sun. These experiences remind me of the beauty of a life lived simply, in harmony with the world around us, and they always recharge my energy and perspective.
I love meeting new cultures and sharing stories with people from all walks of life. Traveling and volunteering gives me the chance to expand my horizons, discover different perspectives, and build genuine friendships across the globe.
Being Filipino, I was raised with the values of hard work and resourcefulness. There’s something deeply fulfilling about labour done with my own two hands. Whether it’s building, fixing, planting, or creating. I find happiness in seeing the tangible results of effort, knowing that I’ve contributed something meaningful and lasting.
At heart, I believe in living simply, working with gratitude, and embracing every opportunity to learn. Whether it’s helping out on a farm, supporting a project, or sharing life experiences, I’m always excited to contribute with positivity, curiosity, and an open mind.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
We are a hardworking and adaptable duo who aren’t afraid to get our hands dirty. Between us, we’ve got plenty of experience with farming, physical labour, problem-solving, and learning new skills fast. Whether it’s building, gardening, or tackling practical projects, we work well as a team, stay positive under pressure, and get the job done to a high standard.
My Skills (Luke)
I have had a very special introduction to farm volunteering through my time in Argentina. I spent a full month living and working on a small farm, where I exchanged my help for food and accommodation. My days were filled with fruit-picking, which gave me firsthand experience with harvest cycles, working outdoors in different weather, and the demanding pace that farming requires.
In addition to harvesting, I also contributed to the building of an eco house on the farm. I helped with laying foundations, which was heavy, practical work that taught me the value of teamwork, endurance, and learning new skills on the go. For me, the most rewarding part was not just the physical results of the work, but the sense of community and purpose that came with contributing to a sustainable project.
That experience gave me both confidence and enthusiasm for this type of exchange. I fully appreciate what it means to adapt to the needs of the day, whether that’s helping with crops, doing manual labour, or simply being a reliable and positive presence on the farm.
My Skills (Maricel)
I grew up in the Philippines in a farming family. The environment there is very different from Portugal; tropical heat, rice fields, and coconut trees rather than vineyards and olive groves! However, the essence of farm life is universal. From a young age, I saw how much effort goes into every crop harvested and every animal cared for. I learned that farming isn’t just a job, but a rhythm of life that teaches patience, resilience, and teamwork.
Because of this upbringing, I feel at home in places where there is soil under my nails and a sense of purpose in a day’s work. I am comfortable helping with planting, harvesting, and general farm maintenance, and I am also drawn to working with animals. Feeding, caring for, and simply spending time around animals is something that brings me joy and calm.
I also have a love for cooking and food preparation. Growing up, I often helped prepare meals with the harvest from our farm, so I know the satisfaction of turning fresh produce into something nourishing to share.

Autres infos...
Beyond specific tasks, what excites us most is the concept of learning from new cultures and lifestyles. We are eager to wake up early to begin work out in nature, share good conversation around a dinner table after a good day’s work, learn Portuguese customs, and contribute our energy to the rhythm of a farmhouse. We know that farm life is not always easy; it can be tiring, tough, and unpredictable. But for us, those challenges are part of what makes it meaningful.
In Exchange
What we bring is a combination of backgrounds:
Maricel's farming roots from the Philippines, adaptability to new environments and skills in cooking.
Luke’s hands-on volunteering in Argentina, experience with harvesting and eco-building, and his willingness to take on physical and practical tasks.
Together, we bring a shared enthusiasm, strong work ethic, and openness to learn from everything around us.
We see Workaway not just as a chance to exchange skills for accommodation, but as a way to build real connections, learn traditions, and carry the experience with us for years to come.
