  • Description

My name is Shayle, I am a 21-year-old theater and tech design student at the University of Kings college and the Fountain school of performing arts, where I work at the community led campus bar. I’ve been studying for there for 3 years, after moving here from Montreal. I’ve been buried in my uni studies for the last three years, so now I want to go to Greece with my partner for a while to hang out and get strong in the sun. I’ve got a lot of student-level experience in carpentry and putting together theater plays/operas/concerts. One of my favorite experiences has been running dramafest, helping kids develop their own theatrical practises from puppetry to talent shows, stage combat, etc. I grew up in alternative education and 'wild-school' style summer camp, so love nature and love hanging out with kids in nature.

I’ve always enjoyed hanging out with kids, I’ve particularly enjoyed being a big sister my whole life. While my little brother and I were raised in the hustle and bustle of a city, we also grew up on my ukrainian-canadian grandparent’s cottage in Mississauga Ontario. I’ve always felt that I was meant for that life from a very young age, raising geese, running around being chased by my grandparent’s giant Saint-Bernard doggy, while looking after my little brother were some of my most glorious memories growing up.
I have a skill for bird watching. Identifying bird calls is a secret hobby and passion of mine ever since I was little (even though I thought it made me a nerd in highschool and I tried to hide it). I loved the Point-Pelee Warbler Festival and have trained myself to recognize birdcalls with recordings over the years.
I’ve be through pooooowerful white water rapids on a month long canoe trip in the outback of Quebec’s Moise river… a scary, and formative trip. Things can go wrong and that’s okay, because it’ll make a great story.
In my spare time, I’m a fan of movies, and as a guilty pleasure I really enjoy some bad reality TV. I am looking forward to sitting at the cafes and hanging with the Cretans. Also of course, in preparation for going to Greece I am making my partner and I watch Tempest (1982) with none other than Susan Sarandon.
Really, my absolute favorite way to spend my time - even though I have a drivers license of my own - is reclined in the passenger seat of my partners car as we roadtrip and camp around the eastern provinces of Canada, on the hunt for the best spot for a slice of coconut cream pie and a cheapo turkey dinner. I’m looking forward to moving on from the maritime provinces with my partner, to explore Greece, their homeland!

Plus de détails sur les langues qui m'intéressent
I have experience as both an english and french tutor. The languages come easy to me and I've always had an interest in both literatures. In highschool, I took a Spanish class. It was one of my most memorable highschool experiences and I can confidently sing Manu Chao today. I learned Hebrew in a small informal study group led by a good friend, whom I learned a lot more then the language from. Finally, my Greek is very limited but I am looking forward to learn Greek as a way to connect with my Greek partner. As of right now, they've done a great job of filling me on on all the bad words, a skill I hope to not be useful on our adventure in Greece.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

Completely bilingual in French and English! I grew up in Montreal where being fluently bilingual was essential to survive in the multicultural city. From selling shoes at a European leather store while studying in college, to whipping up falafels on Saint-Viateur during the peak of covid. I've been considered adaptable and on one occasion, told I could sell sand in a dessert.

Since Montreal, I've moved to the east coast of Canada where I've been studying theater tech and stage design at the Fountain School of Performing Arts where I've grown a thick skin. I've learned to use tools that the old me would of been too scared to ever even plug in the wall. I've handled, table saws, jigsaws, drills, bandsaws, mitre-saws. I have developed a greater version of myself through the practice as my notoriously grumpy and hard to please scenic carpentry teacher pointed out "them soft baby hands you started your first year with have proven themselves worthy". This experience has made me confident to try to take on any carpentry project today.

One skill from my old life in Montreal that will stick with me forever is the skill of great home cooking. You wont meet anyone more serious about the art of barbeque then my mother and father. They have taught me how to cook and understand local produce ever since I was a kid. My little brother wants to grow up to be a barbecue master. I love vegetables and fish the most and Halifax often lacks in affordable freshness which I cannot wait to taste in Greece.

I've also picked up some pretty serious gardening skills. I've worked in several community gardens, rooftop and urban. In both of my worlds in Montreal, Quebec and Halifax, Nova Scotia. My green thumb has been a point of pride that I love to show off through the elaborate home harvested meals I enjoy cooking for myself and my friends. (Shabbat Dinner/Sunday Roast!)

I am travelling with a partner from April 20th to June 18th. Maggie (my partner) also has a seperate workaway profile and we will be travelling together. Super keen to get strong outside this summer and use my body. Also really interested in the medicinal plants and health history of some of the islands in Greece. Also interested in the Judeo-Hellenic history (aka like where Paul the apostle travelled) ... :)! Basically, looking for an interesting workaway in a cool spot with Maggie and eager to contribute to a team and get buff and learn a great deal of fantastic things.
