As outdoor enthusiasts, Lauren and I both love to hike, camp, and explore the natural world. We enjoy playing guitar, biking, swimming and playing card games and are Interested in learning to surf.

Description

Hello there! Our names are Lauren and Scotty and we met in the summer of 2021 working in Grand Teton National Park. It was this experience that truly ignited both of our passions for adventure. We worked and lived with people from all over the world, broadening our understanding of the opportunities and beauty that lie beyond our hometowns. Traveling was no longer just about visiting places; it was about immersing ourselves in the culture. We discovered the best way to do this was to stay longer, and the most efficient way to stay longer was to work and to share our talents. It provides an excellent balance of both living in and exploring around a desired area of the world.
This past summer, we worked in Driggs, Idaho with people that quickly turned into family. Our favorite parts of the past two summers have been building families wherever we go and exploring the natural world through hiking and climbing. As of current, we are in Maui, Hawaii living and working on an off grid organic fruit farm. We are learning about sustainable living, permaculture, and the Hawaiian culture while simultaneously adding to our ever growing global family.These are the things that bring us joy and motivate us to be better friends, siblings, and global citizens. Having both grown up in towns where travel was rarely more than a vacation from work or school, we have learned just how valuable a learning experience traveling is when you combine it with work, and Workaway is the perfect conduit for such an experience.

Scotty is interested in becoming fluent in Spanish, as he has taken 12 years of the language throughout his studies, yet still somehow is not quite there yet. Lauren is interested in becoming fluent in French. She minored in French at her university following 13 years of previous study, and she is proficient but not fluent.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

Scotty: I recently graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor's degree in Animal Sciences. I have a passion for animals, both large and small, and I love working hands on with them. I have experience with small animals, namely dogs and cats, as well as large animals, but more specifically horses and cattle. As an unexperienced, hopeful future veterinarian, I was forced to take many steps out of my comfort zone when working with these animals. However, I always made it a point to be teachable and not stubborn, and that perspective alone has led me to be the highly adaptable person I am today. While I started each job a novice, I would always finish my time training the next person to come in, speaking to how much I had learned and developed in the short time I was there. The point here is that one of my skills is my ability to learn any task given to me, even if I went into it not knowing much about it.
I absolutely love being in and connected with nature and am eager for an opportunity to work outside, whether it be helping on a farm or helping to build something. In high school, I ran a lawn service for four years, offering mowing, weeding, and mulching services to all of my clients. Additionally, I helped build a small home for a woman in Belize, during which I became efficient with a hammer and electric saw, as well as painting. I am physically very capable, as I have played sports my entire life, and my primary hobby over the past 8 years has been working out and obtaining a strong fitness health. Therefore, at the very least, I can provide much assistance when it comes to tasks requiring lifting and carrying heavy items. I gain a lot of value from helping people in any way, and hope that I can find an opportunity to share my skills with people who need the help.

Lauren: I graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in French. Throughout my studies, I found myself becoming proficient in conducting research (specifically literature reviews), interviewing, and writing. I consider myself an open-minded and curious individual with a passion for learning new things, whether it be information, skills, people's stories, etc.. I speak an amount of French that could allow me to navigate French-speaking spaces. I have worked in several customer service positions including hostess, server, retail brand ambassador, receptionist, cashier, pool manager, orthodontist's assistant, and babysitter/mentor for newly diagnosed Type One Diabetics that have helped me to develop team-building, interpersonal communication, and creative problem solving skills.
As you may see, I have worked in several different environments; I love trying new things and hope to continue experiencing different fields of work in order to become a more well-rounded individual. On a more personal note, I have an ever-growing passion for cuisine, specifically that of which nourishes my mind and body as well as the environment. I had never considered myself creative until I found this interest in cooking; Experimenting with different foods and flavors has allowed me a space for self-expression as well as time to share and learn from others. It is even more rewarding and fulfilling when you tend to the produce that you are eating.
More recently, I have grown an even greater appreciation for nature and would love to explore a field where I am able to spend more time outdoors. I am a both an eager and quick learner who will excel given the opportunity.

We love meeting new people and learning about new cultures outside of our own. Exploring new landscapes through hiking and camping is one of our favorite things to do in our free time. We're funny (at least we sure like to think so), easy-going people who obtain a lot of joy from connecting with and learning about new people and places. We value living sustainably and hope to join others who share the same passion.
