Quelles sont vos compétences ?
Regarding my farm experience, I grew up on my parent’s hobby farm where we raised cattle, sheep, and chickens. We also had a large persimmon orchard, which we would maintain and harvest every year. For extra pocket money, I worked on my neighbour’s vineyard, which mainly involved weeding and pruning the vines. I am experienced with general farm maintenance and familiar with many tools and machinery.

I am also a scientist and an educator. I used to work at the University of Melbourne, teaching biology, ecology and statistics classes to undergraduate students from all ages, backgrounds and previous walks of life. For the last few years I have also been involved in research on the distribution and effects of microplastics and other environmental pollutants on wildlife.

I love education - but also learning new things myself. As well as teaching adults, I have worked at schools for children, of all ages (from 4 to 18) and children with severe learning or intellectual disabilities (including high levels of autism, ADHD, etc.). For me, it's an incredibly positive experience to be a teacher.

From the moment I first stepped through the door, I was warmly welcomed and immediately made to feel like part of this good-natured family. In the two times I've stayed here, I really learnt a lot from this family and made some memories I won't forget - like motorbike riding, making pizzas the traditional way, visiting food festivals on the weekends which turned into techno raves, and so many more. But even just the small things and moments created a feeling that was really memorable, I feel really grateful and inspired after having shared this family's way of life.

The work they need help with is not too difficult or complicated - I mostly did small gardening and maintenance chores in the garden like weeding, pruning and painting a fence. I usually did this in the mornings and had afternoons free. Nothing they asked was too laborious and when the weather was poorly (raining or too hot) they told me to stop - they really care about others wellbeing. I was treated more like a family member than a worker.

Regarding the food - you won't go hungry here! The family are all fabulous chefs who take turns cooking and are happy to teach or share their culinary knowledge. Alessandra taught me how to make many traditional recipes which I will take back to Australia. Meal times (lunch and dinner) are really special here, it's an opportunity to catch up for the family as well as joke around. Every meal (all of which were extremely delicious) included interesting conversations and lots of laughter. Even though the parents, Alessandra and Martino, don't speak a great deal of English other than the basics, they tend to intuitively understand what you're saying and even though a lot of the time I couldn't understand every detail of what they were saying, I could tell what they wanted to say. They have a great sense of humour and even though we spoke different languages, it was easy to share the jokes. Their three kids are quite good at English, however, and are able to translate anything you need help with. Anyone wishing to learn or practice Italian language will also improve a lot here.

I really loved this workaway experience - I have to say it's been one of my favourites. I'm always sad when I leave this family as I miss them all a lot, and hope to see them again one day soon in the future :)

This was my first Workaway experience and it couldn’t have been better! Maria is a truly exceptional person who I will miss very much and would love to see again. The house and the cats are gorgeous. I loved every minute of my stay with Maria.

Lucky is the family to have Nick come and stay. He’s very conscientious, understands completely the work needed to be done and the best way to go about it.
