Hallo zusammen, mein Ziel ist es, mit deutschsprachigen Gastgebern in Kontakt zu treten, daher schreibe ich dies auf Deutsch. Ich muss noch viel lernen und entschuldige mich für etwaige Fehler in meinem Text.

Vor einem Jahr nahm ich mir ein Sabbatical, um zu reisen und Sprachen zu lernen. Es war eine fantastische Erfahrung, während der ich die tollsten Menschen kennenlernte und nicht nur ihre Sprachen lernte, sondern auch ihre Kultur hautnah erlebte. Durch meine Freiwilligenarbeit habe ich mir auch verschiedenste technische und soziale Fähigkeiten angeeignet, die ich heute in meinem Alltag nutze. Dank WorkAway und WorldPackers hatte ich eine sehr eindrückliche Reise und kann nun einige der schönsten Erinnerungen meines Lebens mitnehmen.

In one year, I learned French in France while working in the garden of my French family in the countryside then moving to the city to work in a hostel. I continued my French journey in "La Fin du Monde" of North America in Quebec, with two different Quebequoise families. I learned how to work on wood with the first in the countryside of Quebec and I gardened with the other in the suburbs of Montreal. I finished my French journey in a large hostel in Montreal. I then decided I could learn Italian with the same approach so I flew back to Europe where I learned Italian in beautiful Sicily while remodeling condominiums in Catania, working in a hostel in Napoli, and then preparing the land in the grape fields of my Italian family's winery in Genova. With a few months left of my trip, I decided I could do one more language so I went to Brazil to learn portuguese. My Brazilian family helped me became a master sou-chef in a paradise ranch outside of Sao Paulo and I finished my trip in a hostel in the city.

In an ideal world, I would keep doing this for the rest of my life. Travel to a new place and learn or practice their language. Nevertheless, I am back to reality now. I am back to my routine with my 9 to 5 and making short trips when possible. Maybe in the future, I can save enough money and get myself in a position where I can take another sabbatical. In the meantime, I plan to take a mini trip that is focused on learning German by volunteering.

I have been studying German since the beginning of the year and I would like to take it to the next level. I am looking to volunteer in Germany, Switzerland, or both. I bring the same attitude as I did in my sabbatical; I am extremely motivated learn and to help my hosts in any way I can while hoping that they will have the patience to help me with my language journey. The next section of my profile has specifics about my background, my motivation to travel, and my fascination with languages. Feel free to read if you have the time. I grew up in Mexico and moved to the United States when I went to college. The idea of ​​becoming bilingual has always excited me. I put a lot of effort into learning the language quickly and improving my pronunciation to make it sound as natural as possible. When I graduated and got a job, I finally had enough money to start traveling. I always tried to go to countries where they spoke a different language. Before each trip, I studied the language for months to learn the basics so I could speak to locals. I have visited almost 40 countries on 4 continents and learned the basics more than 15 different languages. Of course, I remember some better than others. This practice gave me the opportunity to interact with the people of each country, which opened the doors to incredible experiences that made each trip unforgettable. I find that, when locals meet a tourist who is really trying to speak their language, they may want to share more about their life in that country, their culture, their opinions on universal issues, sometimes they will even offer to show places unknown to tourists. Ultimately, this is language is for: connecting people.

When the pandemic hit, I had to completely stop any type of travel for almost two years. Like many of us, I lived alone, away from friends and family for what seemed like an eternity. However, being stuck at home also gave me a lot of time to think about what's really important to me. I realized that learning languages ​​is one of the hobbies that made me happiest. That’s when I decided to start planning a year-long sabbatical.

There are many things that motivate me and make me happy, but one of the most important is learning languages. I have been interested in languages my whole life. It fascinates me to see how different people communicate in different parts of the world and the impact of language in culture. I know that I will study languages all my life whether it means to keep the ones that I have learned or whether I want to learn an entirely new one, language learning will always a part of me.

Das Hauptziel meiner Reise ist es, Sprachen zu lernen und zu üben und gleichzeitig in die lokale Kultur und Traditionen einzutauchen. Ich spreche fließend Englisch, Spanisch, Französisch, Italienisch und Portugiesisch. Jetzt konzentriere ich mich auf Deutsch. Als Freiwillige/r habe ich am meisten von denen gelernt, die keine Angst haben, mich zu korrigieren. Ich bin sehr offen für Feedback, weil ich weiß, dass es mir nur helfen kann, besser zu werden. Neben meinem Sprachenlernen durch Freiwilligenarbeit habe ich an unzähligen Sprachaustauschveranstaltungen auf der ganzen Welt teilgenommen und bin daher sehr gut darin geworden, anderen beim Lernen zu helfen. Ich habe gelernt, langsam zu sprechen, jedes Wort deutlich auszusprechen, geduldig zu sein und Menschen sanft zu korrigieren, wenn sie offen für Feedback sind.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I have had the privilege of volunteering 11 different times in 6 different countries through WorkAway and WorldPackers. My ideal experience is one where I get to learn a new skill while practicing my target language. Of course, I like tasks where I get to talk to people, but I am not afraid of physical tasks. Half of my experiences were in hostels, where I got to do many different kinds of tasks. At this point, I feel like I could open my own hostel. I also have a preference for working in food-preparation tasks because I enjoy cooking and there is always a lot of communicating there. Here's a summary of the activities I had done in the past:

1. Gardening and cutting trees in Bourgoin-Jallieu, France: My first WorkAway experience with the warmest French family. I stayed in a caravan in the countryside for two weeks where I prepared the soil for a huge vegetable garden and did other gardening and very physical tasks. My kind host only spoke French so I quickly learned enough to keep a conversation. I have my own tree in their garden!

2. Bartender and receptionist in Lyon, France: Volunteered in a hostel for one month with a small team of French people that became my close friends. Started by changing beds and cleaning. They upgraded me to work at the café/bar and reception when my French improved. I was close to the metro station so I got to explore all of the city. I felt like a local very soon after I started.

3. Gardening in La Prairie, Québec, Canada: Stayed in a house in a suburb close to Montréal for about two weeks with a very insightful lady. I helped mostly with gardening outside but also helping with general maintenance of the house and cooking.

4. Wood-working in Saint-Basile, Quebec, Canada. Stayed with a wonderful Quebecois family in the countryside of Quebec who really made me part of their daily lives. I mostly helped in their wood shop but also worked on the garden and cooking.

5. M Montreal Hostel in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I was an intern for 6 weeks. It was an amazing experience where I got to share my journey with 10 other interns. I got to help out with activities such as walking tours, the hostel bar, cleaning and industrial level laundry. The walking tours became my expertise. I got to a point where I could do them in English, Spanish, and French I discovered the city on the rental bikes outside the hostel. It was easy to feel like a local in this setup.

6. Remodeling at the Pupi Bed and Breakfast in Aci Castello, Sicily, Italy. This was my first exposure to an authentic Italian experience. The team was really like a family. We even had lunch together everyday as part of the work day. I worked with two other fun volunteers on the remodeling of one of the condominiums. We painted the whole thing, put up a new bathroom, and fixed the garden.

7. Tric Trac Hostel in Napoli, Italy. I had the opportunity to work with a team of polyglot Napolitans and learn about their culture and their beautiful city. Here I got to practice the four languages I can speak almost every day. I worked during breakfast setting it up, in reception helping with the check in, at the bar as a bartender, and as the event organizer. My job was to ensure that guests had a great time at the hostel. I got really good at running the Karaoke events.

8. Vineyard in Gavi, Italy. I stayed with a lovely Italian family with two other Swiss volunteers. We mostly spoke Italian, even when working. I helped prepare the soil of the grape fields for the winter season. I planted the baby vines and worked with pruning. It was very physical but very satisfying work. I helped the Nonna in the kitchen as well.

9. Cutting trees in Kortrijk, Belgium. I stayed with a half-Belgian, half-Brazilian family who was trilingual in Dutch, French, and Portuguese. I helped them re-plant several trees in their property. I got to practice the Portuguese that I had started learning in Italy while working.

10. Ranch in Amparo, Brazil. This was my first time in Brazil and in South America. I lived in a beautiful ranch in the countryside of Brazil where people leave the city to relax. I shared this experience with 7 other volunteers and we each had different tasks. I spent most of my time helping in a large kitchen where we cooked for guests. Portuguese was the only language spoken in the kitchen so I quickly caught on to all the terms related to food and its preparation.

11. Casa Azul Hostel in Sao Paulo. I mostly focused on cleaning the hostel with one other Brazilian volunteer. The hostel was well connected to the transportation system so I had the opportunity to explore this huge city and feel like an authentic Paulista.
