  • Description

Hello! My name is Jared, and I'm an avid outdoor adventurer, dinner party enthusiast, and lifelong learner living in Hood River, Oregon. I work at The Climate Trust in Portland, helping landowners to conserve and steward America's forests and grassland habitats, and in my personal time I am currently studying to be a certified Oregon Naturalist. I'm in love with the rich and varied ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest, and I travel whenever I can to learn about life, landscapes, and human cultures in new places.

I am now back on Workaway looking for a meaningful weeklong stay helping a smallholder family farm or home garden in Ireland in the first half of July. I have plenty of experience working at friends' farms in the Columbia River Gorge, from preparing beds, weeding, planting trees and seeds, harvesting, setting up hoop houses, feeding livestock, and moving fencing. I also love helping my mom out in the garden when I'm back home. Additionally, I'm quite handy and comfortable using power tools; I built a sleeping/storage platform for my van this spring, and I've taken a few woodshop classes at the local makerspace. Also, I know what I don't know! I'm always excited to learn new things from others or do research together to figure out a new process.

In my previous Workaway experience, I helped at a dog sanctuary in Chiapas, Mexico, an artist's eco-retreat near Tulum, Mexico, and a goat farm in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. In all cases, I helped with house chores and cooking; in Chiapas, I fed and cared for stray dogs; in Tulum, I tiled, floored, and built a shower; and in Lake Atitlan, I milked, fed, and moved goats.

I have always been an avid traveler and a dedicated worker, and I love to combine the two; Workaway helps me to become more than just a tourist and contribute to/learn from the places I go. I get energy from new experiences, new foods, and new people. I cannot wait to start my travels and bring my best to each project.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

As an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, I majored in Conservation and Resource Studies and minored in Energy and Resources Group. My education put me in gardens, forests, and lecture halls alike to learn about ecology and environmental best practices, and I'm a strong support to any project involving plants, soil, animal, rock, and landscapes. I help my mom to plant native trees and wildflowers in our home backyard and love to have my hands in the dirt.

For the summer of 2013, I lived in Coclé, Panama, spending my mornings hiking to a mountaintop primary school to teach leadership trainings and my afternoons rebuilding the school's adjacent kitchen. This time in my life helped me to develop Spanish fluency as well as my skills as an educator and a builder.

I have also worked both cooking and serving food in restaurants and campus dining halls, and my partner and I are constantly trying new recipes we find in our many cookbooks to feed all of our friends.

When I was younger, I helped to feed the goats, sheep, and horses on my grandfather's farm in Ireland, and feel very comfortable around animals, especially dogs and cats.
