Hi! I'm Grace from Australia 🐨

I love learning new things and am always open to new experiences; I'm keen to help wherever I can!
I'm really fond of baking, helping in the kitchen, art, writing, photography and nature.

I'm also a huge fan of karaoke and singing everywhere, and I'm happiest when eating nice food :) Super excited to keep exploring the world and meeting new people from all walks of life!

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
Communications: I have professional experience in content, editorial publishing, digital marketing and corporate communications, so I am comfortable with content writing, editing, photography, social media, event management and more. I have also completed studies in radio and podcasting. If you need someone to help with content, I'm ready to lend a hand!

Reception/cultural exchange: I worked as a receptionist for Japanese guesthouses in Nagasaki and Kobe. I also volunteered with welcoming international students to my university and ran cultural exchange/volunteer programs for 3 years.

Language exchange: Worked at English cafes in Busan (South Korea), Okayama (Japan) and Okinawa (Japan) with various age groups, ranging from children and teens to the elderly. I've also taught Japanese via private tutoring in Australia.

Housekeeping/Renovation: I worked at a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan) in the Goto Islands, plus guesthouses in Nagasaki, Kobe and Kyoto, doing all sorts of housekeeping and cleaning duties. I've also done volunteer work renovating guesthouses/Airbnbs in Kobe, Ibaraki and Shizuoka.

First of all - a massive thank you to Taiyo-san, his family and amazing staff!!! I initially planned to stay for 1 month last September, but kept extending until I ended up in Ojika for 3 months instead because I loved it so much!

Volunteers stay in a Japanese style house with tatami and futon about 1-2 minute walk from the guest accommodation,… read more which makes it a very easy ‘commute’ to work. Work itself is very reasonable, with breakfast around 7.40am and cleaning/any other work until 12pm. If you are in housekeeping, you will usually help clean the inn and capsule hostel bedrooms/bathrooms, public spaces, karaoke bar next door (owned by Taiyo-san’s cheerful mum!), sometimes the other properties around town, and setting up for lunch service. We then have lunch together, and then you’re free until 6.20pm. You’ll then help with dinner service, and also eat your own meal with other volunteers in the kitchen. I also helped briefly with translating and proof-reading the inn’s pamphlet from Japanese to English, occasionally took photos for their SNS and showed some guests around the island with Taiyo-san’s mum :) Living here was also a great opportunity to practice Japanese, or start learning!

All meals are included - also on your days off - thanks to the amazing Ume-san. He’s an amazing chef and I ate a lot better here than I do back home in Australia haha :’) You can also use the bikes, snorkelling and fishing gear to explore the island when the customers aren’t using them and I have the best memories riding around the beaches, pine tree forests and towns almost everyday I was there. On clear nights, it’s also really common to see shooting stars and the Milky Way!

Everyone there is incredibly friendly and supportive; they really go out of their way to include you in island life and events. While I was there we participated in the island’s sports festival, dance festival (we practiced a few traditional dances and performed them in town wearing yukata!), went fishing with Japanese Youtubers, did pilates and zazen meditation in a temple with painted dragon ceilings, played games and watched presentations for the local school’s English Day, hung out with locals singing in the karaoke bar, went boating around the islands with Taiyo-san’s parents, and countless more memories.

This was my very first Workaway, and I can't think of a better experience to begin with! I had such a great time and made so many lifelong friends along the way. Thank you again to Taiyo-san, his family, the staff and Ojika Island, I’ll definitely come back in the future :)

Thank you to this place/the team for such a fun time in Kobe! I stayed from the beginning of April to mid-May this year, and really enjoyed it.
