  • Description

    Hey there!

My name is Fiona, I'm 20 years old and currently travelling around Canada.

In 2018 I had the opportunity to participate in my first immersive learning program outside the classroom. I went on a sailing trip in Victoria, British Columbia for two weeks! I was mesmerized by the experience and all I could think about was how lucky my sailing guides were to have job like that. This experience showed me how powerful the outdoors can be in facilitating personal growth, as well as the need to preserve our natural resources. Years later I decided to apply to work in a restaurant in Jasper, Alberta. Due to my love of connecting with people, being in a fast paced environment and bonding with others about the beauty of nature, my time in Jasper confirmed that I was working in the right Industry.

I was greatly interested to seek out more travel programs and this became all the more interesting when my generation faced one of the worlds most challenging times: a global pandemic. Finishing high school on zoom built my resiliency but also made it clear how much I missed having hands on learning experiences. I kept this in mind when I applied to work with Work-Away after graduation. I traveled to Creston, British Columbia to work on a family farm. It confirmed my thoughts that I enjoy physical labour and being a team member. This gave birth for my love of plants and their environment. I found compassion for a plant’s life and how to honour it in the daily harvest and farming tasks. I was introduced to living a clean lifestyle that left as little an impact on the land as possible and I now carry this value with me everyday.

The Katimavik National Experience had been in my back pocket since I was 14 when I knew I wanted to explore Canada as soon as I could after high school. I accepted my offer to the program, said goodbye to my family for the first time and prepared myself for change. I set off for Winnipeg, Manitoba to live with a group of strangers and hopefully become friends! Meeting my roommates who also believed in adventure, indigenous truth and reconciliation and shared my discomfort for moving to a new place is the reason all six of us connected so well and moved to our next location, Halifax, Nova Scotia, being the best of friends. My goal theough this program was to learn about how I can participate to my fullest in this world and advocate for those who don't have the same opportunities as me. I built my knowledge of leadership and teamwork skills through direct experience, reflection, and engaging with my peers.

These experiences have taught me to be adaptable, a communicator in cross-cultural spaces and allowed me to practice one of my favourite things: engaging with my community. That is why Work- Away is so attractive to me, I am able to travel for cheap while broadening my knowledge of the world and all the vast cultures that exists within it. I am confident that I can fit into any working environment while bringing global perspective to the placement. My sense of adventure, experience in tourism and having a clear understanding of how I work as a team member and leader have equipped me with the tools to travel confidently. My dream to travel and work internationally felt so far away and unachievable but I now know that I can reach all corners of earth because of the hosts of Work-Away.

Through my experience with group living I’ve learned that communication is one of the most important skills to use in a successful household. Living with people who you don't know, who have different habits than you and different backgrounds is terrifying. I was so scared to live with five + people because I wasn't sure where I fit in a group or how to communicate how I wanted to be treated. Every group is different but after surviving multiple group living situations I can confidently say that communication is my strong suit. I try to make everyone feel included by understanding each individual’s skills and wielding them together so they can fit in a team environment. I’ve practiced this by making group contracts and chore charts with my roommates so that we all understand each others’ pet peeves and how to feel safe and heard in the group. I understand that people join organizations like Work-Away for different reasons, that each experience is unique. I can contribute to my group by having open communication with my peers and supervisors about how they can feel safe in the environment we are sharing.

I’m a quick study willing to embrace all tasks given. Recently I was helping a friend move and noticed I quite enjoy moving boxes and heavy equipment. Since then I was lucky enough to experience this task again while working in a Bistro. I had to carry heavy food supplies while going up and down stairs to enter the bistro. I am now a skilled stair climber! With this consumer service experience it solidified my thought that I am a people person. I am defiantly an introvert and enjoy my independence but see that I especially flourish in leadership positions and try my best to make everyone feel welcome. I was always that kid who had their hand up first when asked who wanted to be the Mc’s for school events. I tended to go up and above for school projects. Creating intense diorama’s and detailed presentations was and is my fortay. Because of this it’s clear that I'm a visual learner and love to work with my hands. For example I’ve been working on deconstructing my green house to potentially make another. This includes using a drill to unscrew screws and working with nails.
