  • Description

Hello! My Name is Anastasia (Sia),

I have just graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in History of Art and Spanish. I still live in Edinburgh, Scotland but I am from Athens, Greece.
I am starting my postgraduate degree in September in the Environmental Humanities, with a particular focus and interest in eco-poetry, environmental ethics and philosophy, and environmental translation (Spanish --> English).

Since 2020, I have had a WWOOFing or a WorkAway experience over the summer, and each one has enriched my life so much. Since 2020, I’ve volunteered on a small permaculture orchard (family-scale) with chickens and bees on Oinousses, a Greek island. Daily tasks include weeding, watering, harvesting, and collecting eggs. We also move the bee hives to mitigate population loss when needed, and collect some honey from the frames in August. I also learnt how to make jams, helped make a chicken home out of recyclable materials as well as a seaweed compost.
In 2021, I volunteered on another small permaculture farm in Evia, an island in Greece. Daily tasks involved taking care of the cats, dog and chickens, watering the grounds, and harvesting vegetables and fruits. I worked mostly independently here, and enjoyed taking initiative. The same summer I volunteered at a Monastery in northern Greece, and then I returned for a couple of weeks in August of 2022. Daily tasks involved weeding, harvesting, milking goats and sheep, helping in the cheese kitchen, collecting eggs, packaging products for the monastery shop, making essential oils and cleaning the monastery.
I have loved learning more and more about the natural world, the peace that comes with working with your body all day, the friendships I have made, and the constant renewal of hope that these experiences have brought.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

In terms of working the land, I'm quite a novice and have a basic understanding of the cyclical and interconnected of an orchard/garden ecosystem. I feel comfortable carrying out manual and gardening tasks (weeding, harvesting, watering etc), working with animals (I've spent time with chickens mostly and have some experience milking goats and sheep) and generally not afraid to get my hands dirty!
Three years ago I also volunteered at a turtle conservation centre in Zakynthos to help build wooden nesting pathways across the beach. I really felt so alive during these experiences.
