Carson --
I recently graduated from the University of Chicago, & am currently a seasonal worker in the US! I've worked as a whitewater rafting guide, cross country ski guide, & in the food service industry.

I would love participate in the immersive experience that Workaway provides & to learn about local culture, & to support your mission & vision in your community. In particular, I would love to learn about sustainable agricultural practices.

I can’t say enough good things about the amazing experience I had volunteering here. The volunteers I worked with are so dedicated to making a difference in their community & it was so inspiring to see & be a part of.

Upon arriving at this place, I was incredibly fortunate to arrive on their Idulfitri celebration, giving me a great chance to… read more socialize with the co-volunteers I’d be working with & getting to know during my two weeks. I so appreciate them welcoming me during a time of holy celebration, & the effort of co-volunteers to welcome & get to know me on my first day & throughout the experience.

During my time here, I hosted two English Fun Classes for 4-6 year olds, two English book readings (with a co-volunteer reading the book in Bahasa Indonesia), & a Math activity for 4th & 5th graders with the goal of furthering their multiplication & unit understanding. It was an amazing experience to help the school children develop their English skills. I appreciate the organization’s openness in incorporating my interests & assisting me in carrying out a math related activity. Additionally, I got to cook with other co-volunteers for our Friday lunch, & helped them with their English skills while they helped me with my Bahasa Indonesia -- one volunteer even met with me for several hour+ sessions to answer my questions & develop my vocabulary, which was above & beyond. I also hosted an introductory computer science session for co-volunteers, as well as a trigonometry session with the goal of developing a more intuitive understanding of sine & cosine.

In planning the activities, I so appreciate the co-volunteers’ advice & help in brainstorming & developing productive activities. For each session I hosted, I felt well prepared with what I was going to do & the goals of the session. In carrying out the activities, the school teachers & headmasters were incredibly welcoming, giving me a chance to get to know them before carrying out the session with the children. I was amazed by their hospitality in offering food & sometimes even gifts to take home with me.

The host family experience was also amazing. Before arriving to my host family, the staff gave me a debrief on some of my host family’s interests which helped me in making an instant connection with them & feeling comfortable right away. I so appreciate my host family opening his home to me, & sharing his understanding of Islam with me. He was curious about my perspective, & we had many many productive conversations. He even offered a Jiu-Jitsu session to me & other volunteers, which was such a valuable experience!

I also appreciate how open the management staff was to feedback, & made the effort to listen to me when I had constructive feedback & made visible changes based on my thoughts.

I had a fantastic two weeks here; it was an experience that has honestly changed my outlook on a lot of things! I have a lot to think about in terms of how I will incorporate the Indonesian spirit of gratitude & forgiveness in my daily life. My only wish is that I could have made the time to stay longer! I hope to return one day :)

One last note: if you’re signing up for this Workaway (as with any Workaway experience), know that they’re relying on you for your commitment in order to carry out programming. During my time here, two Workawayers quit suddenly, which was incredibly disappointing as some planned programs had to be canceled. You’ll be doing important & productive work during your time, so be committed to the project when you agree to join! If you have concerns, they're very open to your feedback & how they can make your time here even better.
