  • Description

Hello, my name is Jolien and I am currently 25 years old. I’m from Antwerp, Belgium, and I am very ready to explore the world a little bit more, this year by traveling to Taiwan for five weeks. My native language is Dutch but due to the fact that I have a Bachelor’s degree in English and because I studied one semester at the University of Oklahoma I am also fluent in English. Currently, I've been working as an English language teacher for two years. Before that I took on a bunch of different jobs in order to gain as much experience in the fields I am interested in.

I love teaching and working with children. It is because of this that I decided to get a circus teacher certificate in 2016 and I have been working as a circus teacher until last year. It is by doing this that I fell in love with teaching and I wouldn’t want to do anything else for a living. That's what inspired me to become a full-time teacher. Right now I teach English and liberal arts and a local Waldorf High School. I would love to become a full-time English teacher abroad at some point. But before taking that leap I first plan to travel to the countries that excite me most to maybe one day work and live in.

For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in other cultures and languages, especially Asian cultures, and because of this I naturally caught the travel-bug. There are still so many flavors in the world unknown to me, and I want to experience them all. Somehow, my bucket-list only seems to grow. There is something so enriching about traveling because it gives us the opportunity to grow and learn about the world.

I love writing more than anything and being creative is like a second nature to me. My biggest dream is to be able to publish and illustrate one of my stories one day. I paint and draw, keep a notebook with me at all times and sing the entire day whether I am in a good mood or not. Lately, I’ve also been experimenting with photography and making video’s but I am still very much in the early stages of that.

I am a vegetarian but I am open-minded to eating fish if the situation would require it. I would, however, prefer not to eat meat during my stay. I understand that this might be a little inconvenient but I hope this won’t be an issue. I am quite passionate about the environment and try to preserve it in whatever way I can. Therefore, I try to live as sustainably as is possible at the moment.

To conclude this little introduction, I am an open-minded and very energized person. It has been brought to my attention that I can be very talkative at times, but I am also very skilled at adapting to my surroundings quite fast. Either way, I am an excited person and I will bring that excitement wherever I go.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I spent most of primary school and all of high school at a Waldorf school. If you do not know what this is, Waldorf - sometimes also referred to as Steiner - is an alternative educational system focusing not only on the cognitive growth of a person, but also the emotional and practical development of a person (head-heart-hands, as we call it). This means that through high school I got the opportunity to be very creative and thinking outside the box was encouraged. We were taught how to build a wooden table from scratch, how to weave baskets and knit scarfs, how to manage a vegetable garden and so much more on top of the regular curriculum. During high school we were also required to partake in a number of internships. Because of this I spent one week working on a farm, one working in a daycare center, one in an industrial factory and one week I worked at a social restaurant. I cannot promise that I am still able to build a table, but because of all the things that Waldorf offered I did acquire a variety of skills.

I am also, as mentioned before, good at English. I have been working as an English language teacher for two years now. For those who are interested in improving their English skills or would just like to practice with somebody, I’d be able to offer casual conversations or even planned study sessions. Because English is not my first, but my second, language I understand the trials and errors that are part of acquiring the English language so I am quite skilled at teaching it to new learners.
My native language is Dutch, so if there is anybody who is excited to learn this language I'd be happy to help with that too. But be prepared to learn how to pronounce words such as "schaatsen." :p

I also worked as a circus teacher for seven years. So if anyone wants to learn how to juggle, I may be of help. Because of my professional background I am also quite good with children and young people. Besides that I also just really like to work with children in general so babysitting is also something I can offer.

As I’ve mentioned before, I am also a very creative person. I write, draw, paint, doodle and more on a daily basis. There are always stories forming inside my imagination. So I’d love to participate in any creative endeavors.

I like to believe that I am also a decent cook (mostly vegetarian and vegan though) and a pro at household chores. I’d love to share my cooking with other people and vice versa learn new recipes from the people I meet along the way. According to my roommate I also have a "good head." I am good at remembering things. I have strong organizational skills and I love to plan things.

On top of that, I am a very quick learner so with a good example and some tips and tricks I will be able to pick up almost any task quite fast.
