I enjoy the following hobbies: cooking, sailing, yoga, gardening, drawing and illustration, guitar, traveling of course. By profession I am early childhood teacher (Germany), now studying outdoor adventure education (Finland) - so pedagogy is my field. But thinking about projects I was the happiest about to do so far was to record my own music album.

I absorbed everything I could in Tanzania with all my senses and I feel amazed, I want to recommend it. The colours are bright in Arusha because people wear a lot of them and it makes the eye want to travel, an awesome place for photographers. It was a safe area to immerse into a new culture and get an authentic picture of what kind of life people… read more are living there. I enjoyed tasting the typical food, got invited to cook together with the locals and had a lot of fun.

There was given a direct contact person to me, Lulu, a native who was my neighbour there and friend from Safaris. She included me from the first day on into her family and everyday life in the city. She showed me everything like how to get from one place to another. Or where to buy what I need for the same price as a Tanzanian would pay as well.

Generally Safaris is offering you a lot for your volunteering through the neat accommodation. And the uncomparable safari you will be able to join, it was the highlight of my stay!

During my volunteering social media work was one of my main tasks. I had hopes that I would work more with the safaris and guiding because I study to be an outdoor guide also. But I had to learn that the nature is simply wild in the kind of sense that safety policies are more strict than in European national parks. I understood these reasons and could still find my ways of being extra active among people and nature in my free time instead.

The placement had the right amount of challenge for me to step out of my comfort zone at times, but so that I could still manage. One challenge was communication and overcoming misunderstandings with my Tanzanian colleagues. But this is exactly what the exchange is for and I grew more flexible and resilient through the learning process, that time-management for example can be understood very differently among diverse cultures. The people have been always helpful when I went out and asked for help.

Apart from that I was basically called any time I was needed for some work. Like helping at the lodge, or office to sort the gear room with tents and other camping equipment. So there were no regular working hours. And honestly, that suited me better than expected. It was quite freeing to leave the german structure of repetitive schedules behind. Becoming open and ready to get hands on for whatever is needed spontaneously was an enriching experience for me.

Robin and Jenna were always responsive and approachable in their communication via Whatsapp. Hilde who lives closeby is one of the most warm-hearted persons I have ever met and she has crazy stories to tell from her life! To me she is a power-woman, I just admire her doing all the things she does at her age.

I wish you guys all the best at Safaris, you are doing great team work and especially Robin is having the enthusiasm it needs to make a change for the good of the environment!
