Description
I am currently realizing my dream of traveling across Latin America. I became part of Workaway because I believe volunteering is a fantastic way to become part of a community and truly get to know the culture while allowing for some unique and unforgettable experiences.

I am passionate about people, traveling, volunteering, dancing, hiking, and our environment. I particularly like connecting with people: most of my most meaningful memories contain people who have inspired and motivated me in my own journey.

I just finished my degree in water engineering and would love to get involved in local projects where sustainability or/and water is a focus, or simply learn how urban water systems work in your community!

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
I am volunteering as a project lead on a water project in an environmental NGO and am also the president of the same NGO. I have previously been the Vice President of Education in a local Toastmasters club, also as a volunteer. Based on these experiences, I have exceptional organisational , leadership and team work skills. Additionally, I have worked as a personal coach as well as a teacher in secondary and upper secondary school, so I am well acquainted with meeting people at eye level as well as problem solving. I have previously worked as a boat hostess also, thus I am familiar with making people feel comfortable, taking payments, and guiding. I have also worked as a Buddy for new MSc students, organizing social activities and teambuilding and making everyone in the group feel included and integrated. Lastly, I have worked extensively with different computer programs and modeling as part of my studies and student jobs, so I have high technical skills.

Volunteering on this trip:

- NGO in Cusco, Peru (4 weeks): Planning and executing classes and activities for children aged 2-12 years

Volunteering at the Institute was one of the absolute highlights of my trip and I can't recommend it enough! Special thanks to Laura and Memo who coordinated everything and went above and beyond to make my stay the best ever. The rest of the staff - especially Michelle, Nina, Jonathan, and Joshué - were so sweet and super engaging. I meant to stay… read more only 3 weeks but ended up extending because I loved it so much. I got to participate in a promotion video for the institute as well which was super fun, haha. The institute truly became my second home and I would love to volunteer there again!

The work: I worked 20 hours per week, distributed over 5 days (Monday-Saturday) with the longest shift being 5 hours and the shortest 2 hours (usually on Friday or Saturday). I got one day off during the week aside from Sunday and when there was an activity that I really wanted to do, Laura was so kind to accommodate me. My best tip is to prepare a lot of different topics, games and activities for the different levels so that you always have something ready by the time the class starts. It's very laid-back and feels more like a conversation with friends especially with the older students rather than a class, which was really nice. It was really inspiring to meet and talk to so many students in their different stages of life and humbling to be able to help them achieve their goals to study or work abroad or graduate from university.

The social: The younger students and the older students both have one monthly social activity and I got to join both groups during my stay! With the older students it was a hike and with the younger students we went ice skating. Super fun! I went out for lunch with the other teachers and had a lot of great conversations with both teachers and students during breaks at the institute. Also, during conversation class especially with the older students, you get to be super social as well. Several of the students and the teachers became my friends and they made my stay in Cuenca very special.

The accommodation: You live at the institute in a really spacious room with wardrobe and big bed and a really nice back yard. Everything is super clean and the kitchen is well-equipped. Shower was great, too. Despite there being students during the day and evening the space feels very private. You share the back yard with the (very cute) dogs Chico and Rafaela. The only negative thing I can think of is that you cannot have friends over, but this pales in comparison with everything else that was amazing.

I volunteered here for 4 weeks and overall I had a great experience. Yuri is an absolute gem and helped make my stay very special. Cusco is a magical place and I feel very privileged to have been able to contribute to the community. I have become so much better in my interaction with younger children and I have had countless heartwarming moments. If I were to change anything about my experience then I would have stayed in the center of Cusco at an AirBnB or hostel instead of the volunteer apartment, as I went out a lot and had friends in the center, and also due to some specifics regarding the apartment, which I mention below. As for room for improvement, I feel like there were some "hidden costs" associated with the volunteering (supplies for the children, supplies for the apartment) and it would be nice to specify these before starting. There seems to be a trend furthermore where the children expect departure gifts from the volunteers, something I believe we should try to change.

The work: Firstly, there are two locations for the work: one a bit further up the road ("arriba", with about 30 students) and one further down ("abajo", about 10 students). The work starts at 2:30pm and ends at 5pm. Between 3-4pm you have a class where the students arriba are divided into three age groups whereas the students abajo are one mixed group. I really liked that you can tailor your classes towards your own interests and background (in my case, for example, I prepared a class on the water cycle as well as a class on Denmark). I recommend preparing a few different topics for your classes in advance so that you are always ready no matter what age group you have that day. There are a lot of supplies in the apartment (including a printer) that you can use to prepare your classes. If new supplies for the venues are needed (like glue, pencils, scissors), then the volunteers share those costs. On Fridays we usually went to the park to play games with both arriba and abajo, which was super fun. The children are really sweet and have a LOT of energy, giving you plenty of opportunity to embrace your inner child. Every Friday there is a volunteer dinner where next week's schedule is decided.

Social: Yuri and the other volunteers were super cool and always up for doing things (go watch a football game, go for hikes, going out, having dinner), which was really nice. I really liked the laid-back and familiar vibe in the apartment as well. I did feel a bit outside the group at times, however, as the other volunteers were part of the same group and spoke almost exclusively in French. This got better when some new volunteers arrived.

The accommodation: The volunteer apartment is gorgeous and there are cheap restaurants, parks and gyms close by, as well as a big market. You share the room with one other volunteer. You are responsible for cleaning together with the other volunteers, as well as buying new supplies (soap, toilet paper, etc.). You have to pay for the accommodation, which I was just slightly unhappy about, as I believe you should get accommodation for free as a volunteer. But I also understand that as an NGO it is difficult to offer free accommodation. There were two or three water cuts during my stay and the shower was almost always cold, which was another negative for me. The apartment is a bit far from the center but close to the work locations, so here it is a trade-off.
