Hello!
My name is Alice. I am thirty-three years old, and from Australia. I grew up on a farm in rural New South Wales so I have lived around and worked with animals my whole life. I am a keen horse rider (intermediate level). I also enjoy hiking/exploring, learning, meeting new people, and helping others. I absolutely love being around nature and animals.

I studied a Bachelor of Arts at university, majoring in writing and editing, and one day I would love to become a published author.
I have been travelling (and working) since June 2015. I have absolutely loved having this incredible opportunity to see new places, meet interesting people, and learn everything that I can.

I am definitely not afraid of hard work, in fact, I rather enjoy it, and I am always looking to try new things and expand my knowledge about the world.
I am a vegetarian and a non-smoker.

At a workaway in France, I had the amazing opportunity to assist with the training of two Fjord horses for carriage driving as a pair. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about this - right from the first steps of long-reining.

The summer camp was incredible, definitely a lot of work involved, but always so much fun! I was sad when I heard that they had decided to no longer continue with the camp in 2018, and so I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of the team (and what a brilliant team it was!) last year. After the camp had ended I asked if I could stay on a bit longer, and ended up staying until November, and then made plans to return in January for two months! Though I honestly wish that I could stay for much, much longer! As for my language skills, I arrived speaking and understanding only very basic French, but through my time here, I have definitely improved, at least a little bit, with lots of help from Yannick and Marion, and the locals.
After the camp ended I mostly helped out with general barn jobs, looking after the horses, lots of varied gardening jobs (including building a new vegetable garden with another workawayer, May, when I returned at the start of 2018), and other odd jobs around the farm. There is always something to do, and it can be hard work at times, but it is always enjoyable, and usually involves working with animals in one way or another! I was even able to look after the farm and animals for them a few times when they went away for little holidays. Marion and Yannick also run a riding club on Saturday’s which is always lots of fun to help out with, and all the kids who ride there are great, and always keen to learn.
All the animals here are absolutely wonderful! If you love animals you are definitely going to enjoy yourself here! The dogs are absolute sweethearts, and always keen for a cuddle, as is their cat Savannah. The horses are amazing, and I loved having the opportunity to work with them again and getting to know them all, it is definitely something I have missed while I’ve been travelling. There is the opportunity to ride almost every day, and both Marion and Yannick are fantastic teachers, and they both have years of experience. I was quite a nervous rider when I first arrived, having not ridden in a couple of years, and the progress I made with their teaching was wonderful. They’re both very patient, and always encourage you to push yourself, but they never force you to do something if you are not confident enough yet. The hacks around the countryside are always beautiful (even in the rain!) and there are so many different trails to take!
With Marion I had the absolutely incredible opportunity to help train their two Fjords for carriage driving as a pair! This was an amazing experience, and I loved learning so much about carriage driving, right from the very first steps of long-reigning. I look forward to seeing pictures and videos of their future progress and adventures!
Marion is an amazing cook, every meal is an absolute delight! And as a vegetarian, she would always make a dish for me as well, which was incredible. And even though I don’t eat meat, I really like the fact that they raise a few pigs, or sheep, every year and so this is where a lot of their meat comes from (even including chicken now!)
There are also opportunities to visit some of the other towns/villages and sites in the area, which I would recommend as this part of France is stunning! There is even a line-dancing group who meet up once a week in Asnieres-sur-Blour which is a lot of fun!
Honestly, I could keep writing and writing! I have had the most incredible time here, and I cannot recommend it enough! It truly felt like being at home and being part of their family. I am forever grateful for the experiences and memories and I look forward to being able to return one day!

Alice has been a truly brilliant Workawayer. She was with us for five months in 2017 helping with our summer riding camps for kids and then helped us around the farm with the horses and farmwork and again for another 2 months into 2018. She's about to leave us shortly to go travelling in Canada but we just wish she could stay here forever ! Alice… read more is one of the nicest, kindest people you could ever hope to meet, you will hardly you know you've got her in the sense that she is discreet, respectful and considerate of her hosts at all times - but in addition to this she is an incredibly hard worker, always willing to get on with the jobs however tedious or difficult. Alice can be relied upon 100%, she is trustworthy and dilligent in her work, always paying attention to the little details that matter and make the difference between a good helpful Workawayer and a First Class 5 star person who you trust to take care of everything in your absence. Thanks to Alice"s input we have been able to take several short breaks during her stay, confident that the horses, dogs, cat, chickens etc will all be looked after 100%. She is fit and strong and definitely not afraid of hard work, on the contrary she sees to thrive on it. Alice genuinely loves animals and has a good level of horse care knowledge and is capable and quietly confident handling them including stallions. During her stay Alice helped with the preparation of two horses to start carriage driving, including hours of long reining and we were delighted that prior to her departure we have got them now driving as a pair. Thank you Alice. Alice has helped a lot with the garden too and made a big difference clearing weeds and carefully tidying the garden up. She completely sorted out the wood shed and can swing an axe and split logs as well. She is a great cook too, just ask her to make her amazing Anzac cookies ! Alice has been well liked and appreciated by our clients and friends and neghbours, always friendly and although lacking a little confidence about speaking French she is always willing to have a go. She is always a great team player and has made good friends with other Workawayers and been really supportive of the foster kids we have here from time to time. Life here won't be the same without her, she will leave a huge gap when she leaves and will be welcome back whenever she likes. Any future host will be really lucky to have her as part of their team.
