Luckenwalde has a pioneering ecological and economic model, producing and supplying renewable electricity Kunststrom (art power) to the building and national grid. As a not-for-profit institution, reinvests all revenue from energy production into its contemporary art programme. Located 30 minutes south of Berlin, we are located in a former coal power station built in 1913, ceasing production in 1989 after the fall of the Berlin wall.
This is jointly directed by Pablo Wendel and Helen Turner. In 2017, the art collective led by German artist Pablo Wendel, acquired the former brown-coal power station with the vision to reanimate it as a sustainable Kunststrom power station to both feed power back to the national grid as well as function as a large scale contemporary art centre. As part of POWER NIGHT in 2019, weformally switched the power of the former factory back on.
Since 2017, our international volunteer programme has hosted nearly 100 people, from a diverse range of backgrounds with a wide variety of skills. The opportunity to work on such an ambitious project means you can either develop your existing expertise, or pick up entirely new skills! As all the work takes place under supervision, volunteers can quickly learn so much about construction, renovation and the constant maintenance that is necessary to keep a listed building running. There are also opportunities to gain experience in an art gallery setting.
With other people and artists living in the building, you will meet interesting people from all over the world! We encourage artistic collaboration amongst volunteers and can offer much room for other activities, including use of the workshops. The living spaces are in the power station itself! At the rear of the building, we have a large court with many green spaces where we have started an agriculture programme and there is also a lovely big dog who you are welcome to play or relax in the outdoor space with. Communal meals are provided three times a day along with a vibrant social atmosphere! Many previous volunteers return to help out, and there is an active network of former volunteers.
The building is located in a nice town, 45 mins south of Berlin by train. Luckenwalde is close to beautiful woods and lakes, which you are very welcome to explore at your leisure.

Luckenwalde is 45 minutes from Germany's capital, Berlin, but still within a rural area that allows you to explore natural landscapes. There are also still many industrial structures of the building that are still intact and which we want to transform for our own energy concept. If you are interested, you can learn something about the different methods of energy production, practices in contemporary art and urban planning initiatives.
This spring/summer we are looking for Production Volunteers to help support the installation of our annual performance programme, POWER NIGHT. For this we will need help with set-building, visitor services or artist assistance. Please get in touch if you are interested in any of these roles!
We are also working on the exciting new carbon neutral energy facility, so are always looking for people with manual skills, such as plumbing, electricity, engineering, construction work, renovation and mechanics.
Anyone who is open-minded, motivated, and excited to be a part of our project can apply!
Accommodation is provided within the building itself. Bedrooms are sometimes shared with one other person but we are currently minimising this where possible to safeguard against COVID-19 transmission. There are several bathrooms throughout the building for volunteers. Three meals are provided per day. The team takes turns to cook and undertake household chores.
There are many small historic, traditional German towns in the area with a fascinating industrial character that are worth visiting. There also lakes and many nice paths for cycling and hiking. Luckenwalde itself is a nice town with some shops, particularly amazing second hand shops! and a fast, frequent rail connection to Berlin that runs into the night.
