I like to build, fix, and repair things. I have some skills and am very keen to learn new ones, either from a host or together *with* a host. :)

I am traveling for the purpose of experiencing new cultures, forging new relationships, lending a hand with people's ecological projects, and deepening my skills.

The work isn't just a means to a free place to sleep for me - the work is part of why I'm here. I'm not really on holiday: this is part of my life.

Some of my recent builds: a 5kW 1000Ah 24v offgrid solar system upgrade for a neighbor (design and build), a tiny house studio for myself, a shade structure made from salvaged solar panels and tracker racks, offgrid solar system for our family well pump (600W, 300Ah, 12v, with a 5kW/10kW 240v modified sine wave inverter).

Last summer while Workawaying I rebuilt an aquaponics system on a permaculture project in Scotland, installed the PV system in a van in France, made mud bricks in Morocco, and built a solar thermal panel in Portugal.

I also just recently hosted a friend here on my own land for a month, so I have a bit of empathy for the hosting role.

I grew up off-grid in the desert, helping my family develop the land and build our house. In the last few years I converted a cargo trailer into a travel trailer, and 80% converted a shipping container into a studio. I know framing, basic electrical and plumbing, basic foundation earthworks and formwork, installing windows and doors, off-grid PV solar system design and installation, how to dig trenches and other purposeful holes in the ground, etc.

I’m generally good with computers (for someone who isn’t a programmer/developer) and can do 3d modeling of, for example, a project you have in mind, build spreadsheets, and do other general graphical work with free software.

I’m comfortable living in alternative arrangements: tents, vans, vehicles, converted metal boxes of various sorts, tipis, etc. At this point, normal houses feel a little odd to me.

I spent five weeks here, March-April 2022. I recommend this workaway to basically anyone who reads the description and thinks it sounds interesting. In particular I think an experience like this should be required for any graduating engineering students of any sort - I certainly wish I'd come here at the beginning of my career . ;)

Lucio… read more sincerely cares about the volunteers experience. He listens to them and does what he can to accommodate within reason what they'd like to work on and how they'd like to work on it. He does have a lot of projects and volunteers to juggle (he's looking into getting a manager to help with logistics), so it was uncommon that the vibe was 'calm and soothing' during my stay. I don't mean that it was bad, just that it was highly energetic (reflecting Lucio's level of energy and enthusiasm) and dynamic.

I struggled with this a bit, because I tend to think slowly and ploddingly and enjoy thinking through multiple steps before beginning a task. This is not how Lucio's mind works at all. Sometimes I felt rushed and I didn't enjoy that aspect. But, as a result of this dynamic, I grew as a builder/maker/repairer. I found Lucio's ability to rapidly iterate and loop between thinking and doing inspiring, and I realized how it's possible to quickly Make Things Happen Now! I don't want to mimic his style (I can't, our brains are just wired differently), but I'm grateful for the experience and the exposure to how people like him can get things done.

There is a huge variety of projects on the farm, so you're likely to have a bit of choice of what to get involved with if you have skills or experience to suit. That said, don't expect to just show up and only work on the cool stuff 100% of your time. I got to work on building a solar thermal panel, which was awesome, but I also spent time picking up and hauling rocks, clearing brush, cleaning up workspaces, etc. I liked this - it's good for me to have variety between cognitively demanding tasks and pleasantly mindless yet physically demanding ones.

The accommodations and facilities are 'off grid rough'. Don't expect a complete glamping setup. Maybe the shower will have hot water, maybe it'll be so windy that the pilot light keeps blowing out and it'll be cold. The workawayers kitchen is entirely functional but not entirely wind or rainproof. It's not the holiday inn; expect this an you'll be fine. I've lived in my caravan for four years now, and I grew up offgrid, so it was all very normal for me.

The best part was the other volunteers. During my stay of five weeks the other 8-12 folks turned over about twice, and the social dynamic was very positive. It felt like a large group of friends all living together and working on fun stuff. This isn't a guarantee, of course, it's always possible for an unfun dynamic to develop with any group of people, but this place attracts good people I think, and also Lucio filters people based on his sense for if they'll be a good fit. Again, Lucio cares about the workawayers experience, and he'll step in if things get too weird.

The farm is beautiful and the location is great. When you're not working, the place is a totally peaceful refuge. I hope to come back and spend more time here at some point in the future.
