Description
Hi I'm Tilly! I am travelling with a friend for a few months in Nepal, India and Sri Lanka following the completion of an internship with an NGO in Indonesia. I've a lot of experience both in the charity and in the hospitality sector and last year I completed my undergraduate degree in Geography. I am an avid reader, keen football fan and a big lover of anything outdoors. Myself and a friend hope that by using workaway we'll be able to better understand the countries through which we travel, make friends and develop our language skills. As potential volunteers for a workaway program in a foreign country, we possess a remarkable set of skills that make us excellent candidates to contribute meaningfully to the cause. Our unique skillset includes:

Strong Communication: Experience in both the charity sector and hospitality have helped hone both our verbal and non-verbal communication skills, allowing us to reach objectives and make deadlines - even when there's not always a common language between workers!

Approachable; one of the many joys of travelling is meeting people from different backgrounds and both of us pride ourselves on our friendliness and approachability, having had experience managing and participating in teams, both professional and personal for many years.

Cultural Adaptability: our ability to quickly adapt to new environments and embrace different cultures (as demonstrated through our internship in an Indonesia NGO and work placement abroad) allows us to establish meaningful connections with the local community. This skill enables us to bridge the gap between diverse backgrounds, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the local customs and traditions.

Problem-Solving Abilities: my background in geography chanels this sustainability lens into everyday scenarios, using analytical and critical thinking skills to identify challenges within the community and devise practical solutions. Furthermore, our resourcefulness allows us to work around constraints and find innovative approaches to address local issues.

Flexibility and Adaptability: our willingness to embrace change and handle unpredictable situations with a positive attitude makes us well-suited for volunteering in a foreign country. This flexibility allows us to navigate through unfamiliar circumstances and respond constructively to new challenges.

Organizational and Time Management: our strong organizational and time management skills ensure that tasks are efficiently executed, maximizing the impact of our volunteer efforts during our stay in the foreign country.

ROSIE
During my two-week volunteering experience , I had the opportunity to gain valuable insights and contribute to a remarkable organisation dedicated to youth empowerment and community education.

I initially registered to volunteer at because of an online profile which boasts impressive programmes and a clear goal to make a positive impact on… read more youth in the community - something which aligns with my own values and aspirations.

Throughout my time at, I actively participated in various volunteer activities, primarily assisting in Reading Fairs - which included making Big Books, leading Read Aloud sessions and making educational hand puppets. My main programme was a Waste Management project with fellow global volunteer, Izzy, we planned and executed an educational focus group, which aimed to raise awareness about critical issues around waste management and promote a sense of intercultural learning among community members.

Volunteering at helped me hone my teaching and communication abilities, as well as gaining experience at taking an idea from inception to completion - with the hope that the project will continue long after we’ve left.

My overall impression of is highly positive. The organisation's dedication to its mission is evident through the genuine care and commitment of its staff and volunteers. To further develop their impact, I suggest focusing on ensuring messages about sustainability are practised in the office - for example getting rid of single use plastic bottles and implementing a scheme whereby people have tupperware for their lunches rather than getting plastic packaging every day.

In conclusion, my volunteering experience was both rewarding and enlightening. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to their mission, and I am confident that will continue to make a significant difference in the lives of the youth and the community they serve.

IZZY
After researching into, I registered to volunteer at because I believe in empowering communities through research-based programs that focus on education, economic empowerment, health, and institutional enhancement to address their specific needs and create a meaningful impact.

Whilst volunteering at I took part in a number of activities taking in several different roles. I produced a ‘Big Book’ on the subject of Financial Literature (my degree is in Economics) which consisted of creating a simple story book for children in order to teach them something about Financial knowledge such as Saving, Spending and Budgetting in a fun and accessible way. Using this resource I also was able to take part in a Reading Fair with other local volunteers to present my story to a class of children. It was super rewarding and seemed beneficial to give children education beyond simply language.

Another activity I participated in involved giving various presentations and Q&A sessions to local College volunteers on life, work and university in the UK along with our motivation and experience during our volunteering program. We also had the chance to get to know and talk with many of the volunteers over our program duration which was both enjoyable and very interesting.

My favourite activity at was the Waste Management program that I and Rosie another GV undertook during our time which included a Virtual Tour and a Focus Group Discussion around the issue of Waste and Waste Management in Malang. It was so amazing to be able to run a project completely ourselves based on our own interests.

In terms of knowledge and skills, I believe I learnt a lot in the time spent at such as communication, teamwork and time management along with how to adapt to living with a host family which was my favourite part of the whole experience! I loved living amongst a Malang family who were so kind and welcoming throughout my stay and made my experience in Malang so amazing.

Finally, in terms of any feedback I have for further development, the only thing I slightly struggled with was occasional mixed messages and lost information when it came to schedules and timings for the day.
