Description

Hello! My name is Emilija and I am on a gap year after school. During this year I want to go out of my comfort zone, travel, experience new cultures, and better understand the world and myself. That is why I decided to join Workaway! I firmly believe these new experiences will help me choose my path in the future, better understand what kind of life I want to live, expand my understanding of the world and humans and result in a richer life, that I desire so deeply.

I am 19 and I live in Lithuania with my family and cat Pupa (it means bean in English). After finishing school I decided to take a gap year to experience and learn new things. I have a lot of goals and desires for this year and I will tell you about myself through them because I think they reflect my values and personality well.

SELF-DISCOVERY
I think it is really important to get to know oneself. That is why I love journaling, taking personality tests online, reflecting on the results and reading psychology articles and books. If that says anything to you, I am an INFP 9w1. Reflecting is even more powerful when you have experiences to reflect on. That is why I believe that taking a gap year and having new experiences will have a huge effect on my self-awareness and understanding of myself and therefore – my self-confidence. Moreover, I believe it will help me figure out what I want to study, discover my path and better understand my values, strengths and weaknesses.

LEARNING/IMPROVING SKILLS
Wow, this section turned out to be a lot longer than I anticipated, so I shortened it.
I have quite a few hobbies and I wanted to spend more time on them this year to both improve my skills and have fun!

I love playing tabs on my ukulele. It’s so fun to see my improvement and become able to play the music I love.

I love beautiful things. Especially when I can make them with my own hands. Therefore there is always some kind of DIY project waiting for me on the table. Although with a very limited assortment, I have an Etsy store. Probably my most interesting DIY project was avocado pit carving.

Cooking (especially baking) is another hobby of mine. Holidays, birthdays and other celebrations are even more exciting for me because I get an excuse to try out yet another cake recipe!

Board games. I find it fascinating and fun, how I can use and improve my strategical and logical thinking skills by playing! My favorite board games are not competitive (teamwork-based), like “The crew”, “Just one”, while I also really enjoy some more classic ones like “Ticket to Ride”, “Dixit”, “7 wonders”.

Dancing. After having dance lessons in school (we tried out salsa, rumba, cha-cha, swing, bachata) I discovered my love for dance! For now, I only dance around in the house, but I hope to join dance lessons when I go to university and my life is a bit more stable.

I am interested in programming, game development, 3D art, animation, motion design and video making. I am proud to say that I made a 3D mobile game (although pretty bad) for my sister’s birthday a few years ago, a 3D animated video, illustrating a book passage and other little projects. Unfortunately, I completely abandoned these hobbies recently.

Oh god, this is getting long. I also enjoy learning languages. It is so lovely to see my progress and little by little to be able to understand other systems of communication. At the moment I am learning French and some programming languages.

Other random interests include: I adore birds, especially crows and seagulls, and would like to learn more about them and overall biology. I’d love to study ornithology just for fun. I find physics really interesting, loved it at school. I’d love to be able to recognize constellations. I also want to learn about and start investing.

TRAVELLING
Like most people, I love to travel. To see beautiful places, experience different cultures and ways of living. It is also a helpful reminder that we are all very different and there is no one correct way of living. It is amazing to experience how in some places people don’t take life too seriously and how in others they value privacy and peace, to observe yourself in those environments and learn something from them.
While I have been travelling with my parents during summer, this year I went on my first interrail backpacking trip on my own. I gained more independence, organization skills and was reminded of how truly wonderful it is to live in Europe. I hope to travel even more with Workaway!

VOLUNTEERING
During my gap year, I also want to volunteer in local non-profit organisations and events. Right now I am volunteering in an opera performance "Sun&Sea", that won a golden lion in Venice Bienal 2019. The positivity of this experience even surprised me! I love being part of a volunteer circle, meeting very interesting people, who share the same values as me, helping out in a performance that I admire and spreading the message that I resonate with. This experience is truly energizing and I am excited for every day of it.

MY PERSONALITY
I hope you got a little sense of my personality already so I’ll try to be brief. I am kind and open-minded, never quick to judge people. I am good at seeing different sides of a problem or situation. I am creative and curious. I am more introverted than extroverted and a bit shy with new people, but I am good with being and working on my own and happy to chat when others are in the mood for that! Among other things, I value justice, equality and ecology. I always try to improve and be my best self!

I look forward to and am excited about meeting different amazing people from all over the world, learning from them whatever they can teach me and gaining confidence in my social skills.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I have some photo and video editing and C++ programming skills, I am creative, therefore I have tried many different creative activities including pottery, animation, carving, and jewellery making. I love cooking and baking for myself and my family! I am kind, understanding, open-minded and non-judgemental which allows me to lovingly accept other people, and be patient with other’s struggles. I am creative, flexible and passionate, which allows me to contribute to all kinds of activities and bring my own ideas and perspectives.
