    Description

    WHO AM I?
My name is Sam and I live in a magical little place on the side of a mountain in the South Pacific side of Costa Rica with my two kids (half the time). The property is secluded, private, quiet.... several acres of fruit trees, a greenhouse, and some really epic spots for a morning coffee, stroll through the jungle, or evening fire. Also a short drive or day-trip to lots of beautiful nature spots.

I can be very social, but also like my space and alone time. I'm a very orderly/clean type of person and it's very important for me that all spaces are well kept and free from clutter. I also highly value critical thinking and common sense (so please don't stack wet dishes on top of dry dishes, for example :). I'm a pretty open type of person, and enjoy an environment of radical transparency where we're able to speak the truth (in love), and no one takes offense. I believe in doing everything with excellence and beauty, whether it's planting a flower or cleaning a toilet.

    WHAT IS THIS PLACE?
The intention for this place is to cultivate the body of Christ like we see in Acts 2. This means waking up asking yourself “how can I put love into action today?” The aim is to calibrate our lives around the type of actions that Jesus said will produce the fruit of his Spirit (love/joy/peace/patience/goodness/kindness/faithfulness/humility/gentleness/self-control).

    Jesus defines love as:
Laying down your life for others (John 15:13)
    Obeying God’s voice (John 14:15)
    Loving enemies (Matthew 5:44)
    Feeding the hungry (Matthew 25:35)
    Choosing mercy (Matthew 9:13)
    Welcoming strangers (Matthew 25:35)
    Forgiving endlessly (Matthew 18:22)
Identifying with the least and forgotten (Matthew 25:40)

    WHO'S INVITED?
If your goal is to live with the love of Christ controlling you, and are ready to welcome the discomfort this causes to your natural prideful selfish self (purification of your soul by obedience to the Truth, 1 Peter 1:22), you’re invited.

    HOURS & FOOD
Food for basic meals is provided, and creating meals from the land is encouraged/appreciated!! There's a small grocery store nearby if you'd like to buy special items as well.
20 hours/week of work is expected. Sometimes they'll be flexible and sometimes structured, just depending the nature of the project at hand.

    OTHER NOTES:
    1. There are 7 cats & 3 dogs on the farm, so you can't be allergic to those...
I also have my two exceptionally amazing kids every other week (12 and 15 years old). My daughter would be happy to learn a new recipe or bake something yummy with you. My son is the type who likes working out, shooting his pellet gun, or making something explode. They both enjoy art, and are sure to make you laugh with their witty comments :)

    2. I’m not your babysitter. Wake up by 5am, take initiative, don’t walk past a weed more than twice without pulling it, keep the laundry station free from goopy detergent sitting on the dryer, bag your trash appropriately so poopy tissues don't get strewn around the yard, don’t wait for someone else to clean up the mutilated lizard a cat brought into the kitchen that’s attracting ants, take out the compost bucket before it’s growing maggots, and DO NOT eat my gummy dinosaurs.
Lastly… this is the jungle. There are big loud clumsy flying bugs that pee on you in the jungle. It's hot/humid, and you will be sweating profusely at times. There's no McDonalds or double-stuffed Oreos. Only one brand of peanut butter, the Vitamix is sacred, and makeup is futile.

    WHAT WE DO!
There are several ways you can volunteer:

    1. Homestead Help: could be splitting firewood, tending the greenhouse, painting a room, pruning a fruit tree, carpentry projects, general cleaning, cooking food off the land, or squeezing the enormous larva of a bot fly out of my dog's buttocks if you pull the short stick.

    2. Food Boxes: this is a project to create networks of routine food deliveries to those in need, while assisting the recipient families in creating something to generate food or income themselves (think chicken coops, garden beds, micro-businesses).
You can support this project in several ways:
    - Work alongside families we support to create a shareable crop - build gardens, plant roots, or create processing systems for abundant harvests (like solar dehydrators to preserve bananas, mangos etc).
    - Develop ways to raise donations (benefit concerts, IG presence, community events?).
    - Help grow/harvest/process food on our farm (fruits/veggies/roots) to distribute with the food boxes.
    - Help develop our non-profit coffee shop (see below!)

    3. The Cafe: our non-profit Cafe is just around the corner from the farm, and serves as a hub for promoting charitable initiatives, receiving donations, and inviting others to join our expression of the love of Christ. We need help developing/improving the space (like building a playground or building a tea garden out back) and coordinating community events.

    4. Media Creator: I'd like to create...
    - A video about the farm & our projects to share as an explainer video/invitation for people to visit the farm.
    - A video showing the Food Box project and how it works - spreading the idea and birthing the idea in other communities.
    - Content for social media.

    Autres infos...

There's quite an expat population around me with community events all the time. Within a walk or a day trip to hikes/waterfalls/beaches/town. Bus transport does exist, but also walking & hitchhiking are common. I personally drive around quite a bit so getting to the store or an event would not be difficult...
