Description
We are a developing, eco friendly backpackers in rural Transkei. We can accomodate 35-40 people. We are working on re-establishing our large vegetable garden, and many exciting projects lined up. We have a small restaurant and bar area with the most awesome sea and river views from the deck. On offer in and around Tshani village is yoga, sports massage, surf lessons, fishing charters, Kayaking, Wild hikes and cultural walks and activities

Our location is about 300m as the crow flies and 900m walk to the stunning beach, awesome surf (WORLD CLASS WAVES) and great fishing. Kayaking up the river, as well as hiking, is a must and will be arranged for volunteers.

This is the perfect place to relax, learn and explore. We focus on a very sustainable and community based way of life. We are totally immersed in the heart of the community, so a rural and authentic African experience is guaranteed.

Travellers will be immersed in a rural Xhosa village; a cultural experience like no other. Volunteers will be exposed to language, traditional cooking, music and way of life. There are many life lessons to learn, as well as a new perspectives to gain. We have a fun and family atmosphere here and within very little time Workawayers will feel part of the community - part of the real South African experience.

We request 5 hours 5 days a week from each volunteer, when not working, there is loads to do for the outdoors enthusiasts - hiking, fishing, kayaking, surfing, beaches, snorkeling, whale watching, caves, rock jumps and more. Otherwise just kick back and relax - interact with locals, take some alone time. We want you to have the best experience and your time off is very important. We'll support and help with anything Workawayers would want to do.

There is a daily bus to the city that return in the evening again.

Having the chance of enjoying this corner of the planet is just priceless. The Transkei is an astonishing, natural and wild paradise inhabited by the Xhosa people with their unic culture. Expect the unexpected and leave time behind. It's Vukani Timezone there and Neil, Lee and the family make it really special with different challenges every day. And the dogs of course <3

What an amazing experience ! If you are looking for a remote place, far from the civilization to focus on essentials, this is your place. We stayed at Vukani for 3.5 weeks and we both loved it! Lee and Neil are great hosts, very flexible, kind and nice people to work with. We both could work on things that we like to do, so for us it did not feel like work at all. I absolutely loved my time here! And i can't wait to come back for at least a few days and see how the place has developed! It is an amazing place to go and just relax (after your work obviously (; ) and get away from all the stress in the "normal world". That litle village is it's own litle world where time stands still and none of the issues… read more outside of it really seem to matter .

Although it was my first Workaway experience ever, i think i got really lucky and had an opportunity not many people get to have. The Backpackers is in a place of massive change at the moment, reorganising itself all the way from the bottom. This made it possible for me to also participate in planning and organizing the future of the hostel, which i think was really unique. It was really interesting to see how much it takes and what all plays into developing a Backpackers, especially in such a remote and rural Area as the Transkei.
While all that change ultimately also led to some tension between the (partly new) staff and some stressful situations, they were never towards me or the other Workawayer (who arrived a litle later) and were also the only negative thing i can think of in the three weeks of my stay (except for the exceptionally bad weather for that time of year, but that's under nobodys influence).
I think because the hostel and the staff is so small and the location so remote, it is a way more personal experience than in most other hostels. It feels more like a farmstay with a family where the occasional visitor pops up and needs to be taken care of. This is probably also why i feel very connected to the place and the hostel is a project that i am a part of and that i really care for. This felt so much better than just going to a hostel to help out for a while so that i wouldn't have to pay.

About the place itself: The location is absolutely stunning with an incredible view over the bay and rivermouth. The beach is just a 10min walk away and you can also talk to Nochana to go kajaking in the lagoon and up the river, which was my favourite free time activity. Surfing apparently normally is incredible, but the storms unfortunately kind of messed it up for me.
The longer you stay, the more connections you also get to the family owning the land (they come to the deck every evening to whatch TV and Mama Spargs gets more and more involved with helping to run the Hostel) and to the people living in the village, like rastafari Roots who runs an incredible tiny café in his own house to have dinner at and local fisherman Kabalazi.
Lee is the manager of the Backpackers and incredibly energetic and eager to get his hands dirty. Unfortunately, quite often he isn't there, but during his abscence, Neil organizes the place just as well. He is an incredible friend, has a lot of knowledge about nature, permaculture and farming in general and is the most amazing chef! I spent most of my time with him and Jenn, who was in charge of alle the bookings, Social Media and online stuff, but unfortunately had to leave because of personal reasons. Now Neil has to do that job in addition to everything else he already does, so please don't be hard on him if he takes a while to respond to your messages :).

Thank you guys so much for the time we had together! I hope to see you all when i come visit again! And the best of luck with busy December!!
