Requirements: Working with horses in Ecuadorian Andes.
Competent & confident rider, used to horse care/handling horses, basic vet skills (recognize sick horse, lame horse, basic wound cleaning). You will (rapidly, after some training) be expected to lead (’pony’) two horses while riding.
3 month (90 days) minimum (occasional exceptions made), including some travel time.
Basic Spanish absolutely necessary – eg ask directions (and understand answer!) – the better your Spanish the more you will get out of the experience.
Driving: need to be able to drive an old manual (‘stick shift’) jeep.
Minimum age 25 years old
Weight limit 75kg (sorry, very personal, but high altitude and relatively small horses means that this is important for the horse welfare)
We pay board and lodging.
Possibility of extending for 3 months more.
For ‘extra’ work, special skills (computer, marketing) I often give volunteers special projects and agree with them a fee for completing this project.
As well as assisting on the rides and seconding the main guide on certain days, if you are able to guide – have experience of leading rides, being the main guide (or if you have the skills so I can show you how to) then you will be able to guide some rides and there is a daily fee for that (note: this is NOT possible if you do not have an adequate level of Spanish). Number of riding tours/days you are assisting on rides depends on time of year & your skills.
THE HORSES are adorable and easy going (says every single volunteer!). They are generally mellow and have great characters and are used to being handled. At the moment 16 horses; there are some steady ‘trail masters’ and more responsive horses – lead horses/advanced rider only horses and some retired horses. Often when new horses arrive they are much more nervous and need special care/attention but soon come round with gentle handling.
