Looking for a long stay (6 - 12 months) for au pair/mothers help etc
We currently have three long term helpers, Claire 23 and Mike 32, and Honza who is 27. We have two spaniels and two indoor cats, and quite a few outside cats.
From September I will be startin a new business, as well as working part time, 2.5 days a week, at a business school locally. I also have 3 vacation rental properties, which take up a fair amount of my time too. Two are on site, and one is at the beach about 35 minutes away. They are all rented out for between 25 and 30 weeks a year and we try to make the most of them when they are not rented out. We try to go to the beach house every weekend, unless it is rented out.
We live in an old stone house, which used to be a farm, we are surrounded by horses and cows. This area of France is the dairy capital of Europe.
Claire who has taken on the role of au pair is think of leaving at the end of September, after 16 months with us, and as a lot of our major projects are coming to an end I am now looking for a couple or 2 friends, one to take over the au pair role that Claire does and the other to finish the new apartment where you will be living.
Now the structural work is finished we need help with finishing flooring, painting, etc - plus help keeping all the other balls in the air - our rentals, my kids, my real job, my new business and putting food on the table!
We also have a veggie garden and fruit garden which always need help escaping from the weeds and picking fruit in season. Our dogs, two spaniels, also need rather a lot of exercise.
We are in a rural location so a driving licence is essential, and a willingness to drive a manual car. If you cannot drive please do not apply. The person with the au pair role will have a car, which can also be used for trips off.
I often don't have much time available so it is important to be independant and a self starter. Normally we all eat together as a family in the evening, and we do our supermarket shop together so you can choose your breakfasts and lunches.
Bizarrely Normandy has a pretty active music scene, especially in the Spring and Summer.
Type de travailAnimal care,
Help in the house,
Cooking / shopping,
Babysitting / child care,
I am really looking for people who can just join the family, and on top of the actual work also help out with:
cooking in the evening for family meals - helpers included;
playing with the girls, bike rides, rough housing etc
helping them with their reading & maths, when there is time and motivation (which is not often)!
Helping with preparing the gites for guests - occasionally cleaning, bed making etc (we have a great cleaner so this is rare)
Oiling garden furniture
Generally keeping the place in working order so that it looks great for our self-catering rental guests.
Help with the new business, probably picking up orders from local food producers.
There are always things to be done, but self-starters are much appreciated.
Jobs for the spring will include:
Gardening - preparing the veg garden for next year under Claires supervision, planting up some flower pots etc for the spring, endless weeding. Strimming, mowing etc
Redesigning the kitchen, building or installing new units.
We provide all food normally. We are meat eaters and would prefer guests are too. We are really passionate about food and love having people that really enjoy food and eat everything, and are happy to cook or help prepare. Meals are family affairs and help in preparation and clearing up is essential. Everyone is expected to take their turn in cooking.
We are in a great location for visiting the area - an hour from Mont St Michel in one direction, Bayeux tapestry and the D-Day beaches in the other and close to Caen, Granville, Coutances Cherbourg and 1.5 hours from Rennes.
A car is not essential, as we have three vehicles. Having a driving license and being able to drive using a gear stick is essential. You are welcome to use my car when its free, and the person picking up and dropping of the kids also has a car that you can share, but it has a gear stick too. We have a discount with Brittany Ferries for those travelling to & from the UK.
Please get in touch if you are interested.
Any helper must be really independent, a team player, a self starter and preferably a non-smoker and non-vegetarian. To date we have converted 5 smokers into non-smokers, so if you are a smoker when you arrive expect to stop pretty quickly!
We have a wifi connection everywhere so internet is not a problem.
There are French courses that run two full days a week, which you are welcome to attend.
You must have a driving licence and know how to drive a manual car.
We are meat eaters, and we love to have people who are passionate about food and cooking. We would prefer that our helpers are also non-vegetarians.
We are in a fairly rural location so you need to be happy with your own and our company. Going out (in the evening) involves driving. We are well placed for trips to Mont Saint Michel, D-Day beaches, Bayeux tapestry, Cherbourg, Caen, Granville, Vire.
Volunteering hours expected
A minimum of 4 hours a day, in as many or few days as you wish. If you are an hour counter this is probably not the place for you. Cooking and cleaning up after meals is shared by everyone.

At the beginning Polly and the girls were away, so our main task was looking after their home, involving gardening, walking the dogs, caring the cats and having a look after the guests in the gites. We also started with the lime-rendering, which was a new experience for
I would be happy to recommend them to anyone and hope that they will continue to
