Building Help Needed
Description
I am a single Mum with 2 girls aged 7 & 8. We are bilingual, but normally speak English at home. We also have two long term helpers, Claire 23 and Mike 32, and a new arrival John 26, who is a chef. We have two spaniels and two indoor cats, and quite a few outside cats.
I work 4 days a week at a business school locally and have 3 vacation rental properties, which take up a fair amount of my time too. Two are on site, and one is at the beach about 35 minutes away. They are all rented out for between 25 and 30 weeks a year and we try to make the most of them when they are not rented out. We try to go to the beach house every weekend, unless it is rented out.
We live in an old stone house, which used to be a farm, we are surrounded by horses and cows. This area of France is the dairy capital of Europe.
We are currently looking for people that can help with the building of our new apartment - which will one day be for helpers - so you need to be strong and preferably like kids, dogs and food!
Now the structural work is finished we need help with everything for the interior - insulating, walls, flooring, plasterboard, fitting a kitchen & bathroom, everything you can think of pretty much - plus help keeping all the other balls in the air - our rentals, my kids, my real job and food on the table!
We also have a veggie garden and fruit garden which always need help escaping from the weeds and picking fruit in season. Our dogs, two spaniels, also need rather a lot of exercise.
We are in a rural location so a driving licence is essential, and a willingness to drive a manual car. I often don't have much time available so it is important to be independant and a self starter. Normally we all eat together as a family in the evening, and we do our supermarket shop together so you can choose your breakfasts and lunches.
Bizarrely Normandy has a pretty active music scene, especially in the Spring and Summer.

We would love to find up to 6 people, to help with the next stage of building a new apartment. It involves lots of fairly heavy lifting, hammering, drilling etc, as we put up the plasterboard and lay the floors etc. Ideally we are looking for people for long or longish stays, as we like to get a good team in place with a good atmosphere.
I am really looking for people who can just join the family, and on top of the actual heavy work also help out with:
cooking in the evening for family meals - helpers included;
dog walks;
playing with the girls, bike rides, rough housing etc
helping them with their reading & maths, when there is time and motivation (which is not often)!
Helping with preparing the gites for guests - occasionally cleaning, bed making etc (we have a great cleaner so this is rare)
Gardening
Pointing the stone walls of the barn
Oiling garden furniture
Generally keeping the place in working order so that it looks great for our self-catering rental guests.
There are always things to be done, but self-starters are much appreciated.
Further Info
Jobs for the spring will include:
Lime rendering or plastering
Gardening - preparing the veg garden for next year under Claires supervision, planting up some flower pots etc for the spring, endless weeding. Strimming, mowing etc
Redesigning the kitchen, building or installing new units.
We provide all food normally. We are meat eaters and would prefer guests are too. We are really passionate about food and love having people that really enjoy food and eat everything, and are happy to cook or help prepare. Meals are family affairs and help in preparation and clearing up is essential.
We are in a great location for visiting the area - an hour from Mont St Michel in one direction, Bayeux tapestry and the D-Day beaches in the other and close to Caen, Granville, Coutances Cherbourg and 1.5 hours from Rennes.
A car is not essential, but could be useful for more independence. Having a driving license and being able to drive using a gear stick is essential. You are welcome to use my car when its free, and Claire also has a car that you can share, but it has a gear stick too. We have a discount with Brittany Ferries for those travelling to & from the UK.
Please get in touch if you are interested.
Any helper must be really independent, a team player, a self starter and preferably a non-smoker and non-vegetarian.

Andy came to stay with us for quite a short time sadly. I'm afraid my dogs didn't play nicely with his collie. He is a nice guy and he did a great job on rendering and cladding a wall, including finding some good solutions to problems he encountered.
Claire is back with us again, and I can only say thank God for Claire. She is so competent and hard working and is making real progress with her French. Really lovely girl, and my kids and I would be happy to keep her for ever. She is also a very talented artist.
Claire is amazing, she came for a few weeks and stayed for a few months and has now come back to stay with us over the autumn, winter and spring to help keep the show on the road. She is a great cook, fantastic gardener, organised, super artistic, awesome photographer, has overhauled our blog, is amazingly patient with the kids and generally more
We only spent three weeks at Moyon and we really had a great time there.
At the beginning Polly and the girls were away, so our main task was looking after their home, involving gardening, walking the dogs, caring the cats and having a look after the guests in the gites. We also started with the lime-rendering, which was a new experience for more

Lovely couple of friends who had to deal with a lot of car trouble. They managed what was a not a very easy situation very well. Its a shame we didn't get to see more of them as we were away for the majority of their stay. They did a great job of house sitting.
I would be happy to recommend them to anyone and hope that they will continue to more

We all loved having John. He is good fun, an amazing self motivated and organised worker, great finisher, tidy etc etc. Really I can't say enough good things about him. He completely re-landscaped our garden, allowing it to emerge from the weed-ridden mess it had become. It has never looked this good before. He tided the barn a major job, more
This was an amazing workaway experience. After work, most evenings were spent in incredible surroundings, chatting and eating delicious food... paradise. Polly is an amazing host, caring, great to talk to and easy to get on with. Ellie and Nina were very sweet and brilliant to be around. The surrounding area is amazing itself and is near some more
Nabeel is great company, very patient, bright and fun to have around. My girls aged 6 & 7 loved playing with him. He did a great job working in the garden and loved my food, which is always popular with me. Seriously, I would thoroughly recommend Nabeel and would be delighted to have him back any time he wants a break from being a high flyer.
Beautiful place and lovely family!
Polly and her kids are such a pleasure to stay with. Sophisticated mum with cutiest and most beautiful kids i have ever seen. I just love to be around the kids at times.
Works in the guest houses and garden are easy and straight forward, u work with music plugged in your ear and you easily forgot how long you more

Sam is great, and I wish I'd seen more of him. Unfortunately I was away for half of his stay. He is a great cook, and the kids thought he was the best thing ever. His English is very good, he is polite, charming and great company. I can thoroughly recommend him. If ever you had a technological problem he would be the ideal person for that too.
These guys are great. They originally planned to stay for a few weeks and ended up staying for 5 months and the children and I absolutely loved having them. It was like having an extra Aunt and Uncle around for the kids and good friends for me. Their touch is everywhere - they did extensive redecorating and added a new bathroom. They are great more
We have had the most delightful time with Polly and her two lovely daughters for several months. We have stayed at various times in one of the gites, at the beach house, and in her house with the children. Polly is a simply charming and energetic woman who runs her business with professionalism and good taste and the fact that we all had rather a more
I spent almost a full month with the family and had a wonderful time. I was treated to delicious food, a lovely room and a family-like acceptance. The jobs were flexible, and as such I was able to pick work that I enjoyed doing; lime-rendering, carpentry, cooking and house-sitting. However, what really set this experience apart from the rest was more
Ben was a great person to have in the house with us, he fitted in really well - the girls wanted to exchange him for their Dad! He is brilliant with kids, helped them with their maths and french, listened to their reading etc. He made a brilliant crocodile in the public swimming pool.
He is very creative - if not the worlds best kite builder! more
