Area: Lydenburg District, MpumalangaNestled at the foot of the magnificent Steenkamps Mountains and overlooking the Kwena Dam, our Farm is situated on 160 hectares of farmland in the Kwena Basin, 30km from Lydenburg, in Mpumalanga. The Farm offers horse trails and pony/adventure camps, as well as accommodation. We are a small family concern. In line with our committment to upliftment of local rural folk, we have recently started a voluntary rural preschool. These children are very poor and non-English speaking. They are thriving on our attempt to begin education. We require the help of fit and happy volunteers to help wherever and whenever necessary on the farm! Priority is to teach preschoolers for 4 hours daily and prepare homework, worksheets etc. Must be able to cook and look after yourself and not mind animals of all shapes and sizes coming and going in the house!! Unfortunately I am no longer able to provide food due to huge expenses and no financial support in the running of the preschool. Driving license preferable but not a necessity. Wonderful homely environment. Remote location - no bright lights and city scene close by!!!!
Area: PascoWe are slowly implementing sustainable projects and our future education center and biological station, in Oxapampa, Peru. It is surrounded by 15.5 ha of rain forest, two streams, riparian forest, a reforested area, and cultivation areas with local fruit crops. Our center is located in the buffer zone of the Yanachaga Chemillen National Park, which covers approximately 120.000 ha. Since 2010 the province of Oxapampa contains the Biosphere Reserve Oxapampa, Ashaninka, Yanesha. Our center intends to confront deforestation, undesired fires, threats, habitat loss and more by generating processes of sustainable resource management to ensure the conservation of the cloud forest, and the environmental services and biodiversity it harbors. By living and producing food sustainably at our center, as well as spreading the word through demonstrations and workshops, we hope to serve as a model in the future to show that things can be done in a better way. Our goals for the future - Reduce forest fires in the area by spreading awareness of alternative agricultural practices - Promote sustainable living and thinking by providing a model which others can replicate - Establish a baseline to evaluate forest and water quality and continue to monitor changing conditions through data collected by volunteers - Produce organic, native crops to create a market for these products and encourage local farmers to do the same - Link the gap between economically viable and environmentally conscious practices through example - Join forces with the next generation of global leaders in the field of ecologically sustainable human progress.

Area: British ColumbiaMy husband and I live in Vancouver and have had a cabin on 22 acres of beautiful, private land at the north arm of Shuswap Lake for 20 years. The property is off the grid with natural artesian spring water and hydro and solar power. It is a perfect place to enjoy nature and wildlife.... bears, deer, mouse, bald eagles, etc. with cross country skiing, snow shoeing, winter fishing and hiking available. We are now in the process of building three more wood cabins. We would also like some help at our Vancouver home, mainly garden work and house maintenance. We are very close to downtown.
Area: Oxfordshire, EnglandHi! We are Maddy and Neil and have two young children aged 5 and 7. We live in the countryside in Oxfordshire in a pretty 300 year old cottage with views of fields and animals and red kites circling above, just 10 miles from the famous city of Oxford and within easy reach of London (40 minutes by train from our local station). Although our house is in a rural location, we are close to a motorway and do sometimes hear noise from it although this is not intrusive. Maddy is a part time teacher and Neil works for a fashion company in London. We hosted three Workaway couples in 2013 and will have availability again from May 2014. We are looking for hard-working, motivated and committed couples who know what they are doing and can work alone without too much input from us as we both lead busy lives and are not always here to monitor what's being done. We need people who can manage their own time effectively, can complete tasks without supervision and are happy to work outside in typical British weather (often wet, even in summer!) Volunteers need to be physically fit and have plenty of stamina and have suitable clothing and footwear for outdoor work. They need to be able to get themselves up and start work by 9.30am on working days. All volunteers need their own suitable insurance. The opportunity would suit an English speaking couple (non smokers only please) who are looking for self-contained accommodation and their own space who have plenty of energy for physical work (mainly outdoors if weather allows). We have 8 acres of land, a cat called Oscar and have a small herd of black Dexter cows which we breed for meat. We have planted an orchard and dug vegetable patches. Last summer we bought an apple press to make our own juice. We also have an acre of garden and a heated (in July and August) outdoor swimming pool which you are welcome to use if the weather is warm enough. The nearest village is 0.4 miles away (10 minutes walk) and has a village hall with yoga and dance classes and a lively cricket club. There is a bus stop in the village with regular buses to Oxford (the famous ancient university, lots of culture and museums, galleries, shops, bars and cafes, shops, cinemas, theatres etc) and our lovely local market town of Thame (beautiful buildings, weekly market, lots of pubs and cafes, supermarkets and shops, a library and a leisure centre). We live opposite an organic farm (vegetables, pigs, sheep and horses) and they have a weekly farm shop selling produce, bread, cakes and local jams etc. Our local train station (Haddenham and Thame- 8 miles away) has frequent trains to London but Neil is also happy to give you a lift to North Acton tube station in London on Mondays to Fridays as he drives there each day for work, as long as you can manage an early start! He could also bring you home again in the early evening. There are also pretty walks to explore from the house, including the Oxfordshire Way, and sports facilities at Thame leisure centre.
