We are a little family of 3 (Oliver, 30, Meike, 35, and Emil, 2) who are seeking connection to the land and community. We value sustainability and want to live a satisfying, healthy and creative life. We have just bought a piece of property with the intent of starting an organic farm and forming an ecovillage. We would like to invite like-minded people in our age group (20-40ish) to inquire, help out, learn and perhaps join and create a wonderful interdependent community with us. We are located only minutes north of Greenwood and only an hour from Osoyoos. 142 acres with Jewel Creek running through it. It has crown land on 3 sides and trails all around. Less than 2 km to Jewel Lake. This summer we are focusing on establishing our homestead to prepare for the winter. We are renovating a log house, one of the few buildings that are already on the land. We are planning to eventually build a cluster of natural homes designed to minimize ecological disturbance and maximize use of the fertile, previously cleared areas for organic farming and gardening. We will use building material sourced from our land as much as possible. We are big fans of cob buildings and round houses. We will produce our own power by setting up solar and hydro systems so we hope to get off grid quite quickly. Grey water will be treated naturally and used for irrigation. Composting toilets will provide humanure for some gardens and plants. We want to consume food that is produced locally, ideally on our own farm, but always sustainably. Our organic farm will supply residents and visitors with fresh, organic food; surplus can be sold on local farmer's markets (twice a week in Greenwood) and to restaurants in the area. We will build root cellars to store fruits and veggies for the winter. We are going to incorporate Permaculture principles: zoning, swales, terraces, composting, humanure, mulching, rainwater catchment, hugelkultur, just to name a few. Some of us have experience with biodynamic gardening. We look forward to meeting many cool people and are excited about what we can accomplish!

Area: We're located 35 minutes from the very hip Columbia, MO with an active music scene and all of the other things that go along with a college town. We're 15 minutes away from a town of 12,000 that has all the necessities. St. Louis is an hour and a half away.

We are setting up a demonstration and education facility which will hold tours and provide a space for workshops on sustainability and self-sufficiency. Our goal here is to develop a lifestyle in harmony with the environment that can continue for indefinite generations and be a resource for those wishing to change their own lifestyles. We are located on 310 acres of beautiful, diverse, rolling oak/hickory forest in the Ozark foothills of central Missouri. We follow Permaculture design principles, and intend to grow loads of delicious organic foods, build housing and other structures with natural local materials, and to create a communal culture that allows those involved to thrive with fewer external inputs and dependencies. Our main projects for 2012 include finishing our straw bale communal house and construction of another small straw bale cabin. We'll be installing a rainwater harvesting system with a cistern, putting in a root cellar, as well as planting, maintaining, harvesting, and preserving a ~2,000 sq. ft. raised bed organic garden and permaculture food forest. We have 4 6-week visitor sessions in 2012. Workawayers are welcome to stay for any amount of time during those sessions, but we ask that you arrive on a Saturday for a tour/orientation. The visitor session dates for 2012 are April 14-May 26, June 9-July 21, August 4-September 15, September 29-November 10. There are 7 workshops planned for this year as well and all but 1 of those is during the visitor sessions. The workshops are free to everyone including visitors. We expect anyone staying here to put in 20 hours a week of work whether it be construction, gardening, cooking, or other chores. We work on the honor system as far as that goes. We also ask that people take initiative and tell us if they see something that needs to be done, or if they see something we could do better. We're open to constructive criticism. We're not "experts" at any of the things we're doing. Tao has his Permaculture Design Certification, but that's about the extent of our qualifications apart from our hands-on experience here. Our accommodations are pretty primitive at the moment. We have several tents on covered platforms with mattresses and shelving in them. A solar shower system and outdoor kitchen. We take trips to the laundromat every week which will be paid for by us. We are completely off-grid and use only the power that we generate from solar panels or our bike generator when necessary. We will have an energy efficient communal laptop set up with high speed internet access. The power is mainly for lighting, charging cell phones, batteries, and limited use of efficient laptops/netbooks. During sunny periods we can be less frugal and run more things more often. We rotate cooking and dish duty for everyone staying here. Most meals tend to be vegetarian, usually a mix of staples like rice, beans, potatoes, pasta, and produce from the garden. Meat is also usually available for those who want it. We are 15 minutes from Fulton, MO(pop ~15,000) where most things can be purchased. It has a nice library, movie theater, bowling alley, a couple good restaurants, etc. It has a very nice disc golf course as well. About 35-40 minutes away is the city of Columbia(pop ~100,000) which has an excellent music scene and a lively downtown area with it's own local flavor. St. Louis is about an hour and a half away for those wanting some big city life. We also have an acre size lake with a dock, gazebo, and inner tubes for floating. There are a couple miles of trails we've blazed, but with 310 acres you can wander along the ridges or creek systems for hours. We're willing to pick people up from the airport or bus terminal. St. Louis is the closest large airport and there are a couple of bus terminals in Columbia. At this point our accommodations and lifestyle aren't conducive to having children out here. We do have a young dog and cat on the property, and as long as your dog gets along well with others, you keep an eye on it, and are responsible for feeding it, we don't have a problem with you bringing one.
