Hi! My name is Manjil. I am a 23 year old Nepali boy working towards educating the children of rural Nepal. I studied in the United World College of India and later in College of the Atlantic, ME, USA. I am the founding principal of Maya Universe Academy. We are the only free private school in the country and we are in our second year. It is located in rural Nepal. We are a community of people involved in bartering education with other goods (vegetables, chickens, fruit trees, goats, service). We work with volunteers and provide free schooling. We run an organic farm with the support of the community and intend to be self sustainable in the long run. We are teachers, farmers, artists and fun people who love meeting others. Without volunteers, our organization will not be able to provide free education. You will get a chance to be involved in grass root development process. This is a youth revolution against years of government monopoly and for-profit privatization. Many villages have heard about us now and are looking for help. We have begun working in two more districts of Nepal (Syangja and Udaypur). Out intention is to make universal education accessible to the rural poor. We are working towards sustainability with our animal husbandry and organic farming. It is expensive to construct classrooms, keep regular staff and supply the students with required stationary and books without receiving any fees from the students or help from the government. We raise $200 from volunteers every month in exchange for food and accommodation. We live simple and eat local, saving much of the money for school and farm. You will only have to pay for the first five months of volunteering.There will be no other costs. I can ask my friends and family members, supporters of Maya Universe Academy to pick you up at kathmandu airport and guide you towards the school. We are mostly looking for long term volunteers but short term guests are always fun! Volunteers can be involved with various fields like construction/education/management/agriculture etc. depending upon their skills and interested when matched with our needs and resources during the time of arrival. Region: Our bed and breakfast is on an island in the south of Thailand called Koh Lanta. You can reach us either by car (2-3 hours drive from Krabi town, 5-6 hours drive from Phuket Island) or by boat (1.5 hours from the Phi Phi Islands). We are located in an area of Koh Lanta called Pra-Ae, 20 minutes by motorbike, tuk tuk or taxi from Saladan, the main town on the north end of Koh Lanta. The Bed and Breakfast is situated up on a hill, nestled on the edge of the jungle. We therefore enjoy an amazing sea view and sunsets as well as a nice jungle life – interesting insects, animals and birds come to visit us, but you should not be scared of them. Remember, most of them are harmless if you let them be. The hill up is steep and there are a lot of stairs on the premises of the Bed and Breakfast so you should be pretty fit to walk up and down. Also keep in mind that it is a tropical country so the heat can be intense, particularly 11.00 and 16.00. It is 15 minutes walk from the bed and breakfast to the closest beach and 30 minutes walk to the closest village where you have ATMs, food stores, restaurants, etc. There are motorbikes and bicycles for rent all over the island so you can easily discover Koh Lanta on your free time. There are also taxis and tuk tuks to take you around should you prefer not to bike.

Hello! We are Aruna and Chai, and we would like to introduce you to our family and our unique bed and breakfast on the beautiful Thailand island of Koh Lanta. Aruna is half Swedish, half Indian and born and brought up in Paris, France. Chai is Thai from Nakhon Si Thammarat, and we have two sons, Shaan (born May 2010) and Jeevan (born April 2012). Our family also includes a dog and a cat. A few years ago, after working in high-ranking jobs in Paris (as an international business lawyer) and Bangkok (business administration and quality controller), we decided to quit and to start a new lifestyle closer to nature and with a better quality of life. We first spent some time as scientific research divers and assistants on a marine biology base in the Chilean fjords in northern Patagonia. Then, in 2010, we moved back to Thailand and selected Koh Lanta as the place to set up a small alternative lifestyle bed and breakfast. The aim of our little bed and breakfast is to create harmony, whether it is among all of us living here or with the nature that surrounds us. We also want to create a home far away from home and make guests and friends feel welcome anytime of the year. Our bed and breakfast is made up of three closely-situated buildings: - A little wooden bungalow on stilts which is our family’s private home. - A three-story wooden building constructed around a massive tree which contains the common living room and kitchen, a common bathroom and shower, and an outdoor terrace on the ground floor, and one guest room each on the first and second floors, both with ensuite showers and toilets. - A two-story concrete building with two additional guest rooms, also with ensuite showers and toilets. We can host up to 12 guests in the four rooms of the bed and breakfast. The grounds of the bed and breakfast also include a garden where we have created a barbecue area surrounded by lots of tropical plants, flowers and trees. We plan to add a vegetable garden and grow our own herbs. We follow several practices at the bed and breakfast which are aimed at minimizing our foot prints on Koh Lanta. For example: We are very careful with the way we use water. We have our own groundwater well which we supplement by collecting the rainwater in huge tanks and use for plants, showers and cooking. We try not to wash dishes in running water to conserve this resource. We minimize the use of electricity by only cooling ourselves with fans and fresh breeze coming from the nearby jungle and the sea. We do not have air conditioning. We only use ecological cleaning detergents such as vinegar, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and lemon juice. For dishwashing, we use the mildest dishwashing product on the Koh Lanta market. We try as much as we can to use eco-friendly pesticides, such as talcum powder or salt, to keep away ants and bugs. Unfortunately, we still need to use chemical pesticides when it comes to termites (we have not found any eco-friendly product yet for this purpose). We use mosquito nets over our beds and windows as well as natural anti-mosquito incense such as citronella / lemon grass. We try to minimize the use of plastic bags and try to buy biodegradable plastic bags when available (for garbage). Whenever we go shopping, we carry our own cotton bags with us. We also have cotton laundry bags in every room for guests to use when they go to the laundry. This is our way to slowly educate people on Koh Lanta that there is an alternative to plastic bags. If we take away food, we try as much as possible, to bring our own tiffin box (a metal box) to carry home the food. There are metal boxes for everybody to use in the common kitchen. We recycle cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles and cardboard cartons, and we are also working on a compost system for food waste.
