We are a family of four living on stunning Great Barrier Island New-Zealand. I am starting a new adventure in permaculture gardening. I am studying and taking over the management of the local community garden, as well as trying to expand our own gardens and working on a plan for the garden to kitchen project for the school. Shane runs the local tyreshop and is a passionate fisherman. The island is a natural paradise, rustic and challenging at times. Covered in native Forrest and surrounded by ocean suitable for every ocean lover. Fishing, diving, surfing, swimming etc. Beautiful inspiring local community and a lot of space for exploring and adventure.

Ayuda
We mainly need help with household tasks such as food preparation, cooking, washing up, vacuum,sweeping, laundry. Both children, 5 and 9 are in school but with the summer holiday coming up I need help keeping them engaged and occupied outside and with baking, cleaning and washing inside.

We have a cute little cottage available where you can have your own space. There is a flush toilet but shower is not in working order, also no electricity. You can use our electricity, kitchen and bathroom etc in the main house. We provide food as we would eat in our family. We would LOVE it if you are keen in the kitchen! If you have any special diet needs you might have to source your own special foods but we mainly eat what the island provides. You can have brekkie, lunch, dinner and whatever is needed to keep you healthy and energetic. But help yourself and clean up after yourself.

We have telephone and internet access but this place is for the person capable of entertaining him/herself not the digital kind of place. Our home runs on solar power so care needs to be taken when using energy. Our only water comes from the rain so extreme care needs to be taken to use water in a smart way (winter is a bit easier on the water supply).

It is easy to hitchhike around the island and walk if you are fit. Great island for exploring, adventure, walking, swimming, yoga, fishing, spearfishing, diving, snorkeling, art, reading etc. Be able to entertain yourself or play with kids, our home is not designed for lounging( yet) we live an outdoor lifestyle. On wet days we do however always have the cozy fire burning and make breads and cakes! If time allows.

I'm writing this so so so terribly late—but logged into workaway for the first time in a few months and realized that I never posted feedback after spending a month with Saskia's family in October, my favorite workaway experience so far.

Saskia and Shane live with their two boys on the side of a small mountain on the Great Barrier Island, a… read more place full of some of the kindest people you could meet. Everyone here watches out for one another whether it's giving a friend (or stranger) a lift from one town to the next, fixing a friend's tire, or hosting somebody for the night while the river floods over the road (the rains can be incredible here!). With Saskia and her family I spent time at the beach, in the garden, went fishing and diving with Shane and to surf school with the boys. Before living with Jake and Gill I hadn't spent much time around kids in years and I was a little unsure about how I would do, but these boys will absolutely win your heart over. You'll be going on bike rides, shooting the bow and arrow, and joining in on art projects. You'll also be eating fresh fish (and wild boar if you're lucky!) most days.

Things I would imagine any future workaway volunteer would like to know: the general atmosphere of the household is warm, a tiny bit chaotic (in a very fun way) and lighthearted. Saskia said from the first day "I want this to be like we're sisters, and we work together," and it was always like that. You'll have plenty of time to explore the island, and 'work' hours are planned together around what the family needs/and your personal needs. The small cabin up the hill you'll live in is lovely, quiet and you'll have the best sleep of your life. The beach is a 10 minute bike ride away (and great for surfing!) This is a house where you can be honest, ask many questions, have a huge amount of fun, rest, and learn about permaculture, cooking, art (Saskia) fishing, all things ocean (Shane) how to raise chickens, where to find the best flowers, how to jump on a po-go stick (haha, boys). For on-island transport you can hitch hike (it's very easy and safe) or make a few friends, or jump in with the family whenever they're going!

The work you do will likely be mostly helping Saskia keep the house running—the island is without a centralized power grid or water system, so all water in the house is collected from rain and electricity is solar & generator powered. It's a great place to learn about those systems and energy/water consumption—and also means that a little more organized work is needed to keep the house running smoothly. So, taking care of the boys for a few hours a day, helping bake bread/muesli or prepare dinner, or helping around outside in the garden might all be frequent activities. You'll truly be a part of the family.

Thank you 1000x over Saskia for the time I spent with you all, now that I've been traveling for months since leaving the barrier I look back on my memories there as some of my best. It was such a time of figuring-things-out for me and you were a wonderful friend through that. Thank you for everything, tell the boys I say hello and that I hope to be back someday soon!

Wow! Wow! Wow! Wow!
One for every member of that amazing family!
I lived in the cottage for a month on this paradise island.
You eat real good food, you make happy dances with the boys, you learn a lot about yarn and felting and soap and your part of the fun intense family life!

I stayed with Saskia and Shane for 2,5 weeks. Sleeping in the tent isn't as bad as it sounds, most of the time we were outside or on the road anyway.
