Descripción
May 2024 Update: we are looking for mature, responsible, attentive folk for May, June, July and August. For the right fit, we can offer a long stay that could include significant house and farm-sitting responsibilities while we are on short vacations.

Join us and be wrapped in the warm care of a homesteading family for 2-3 weeks (or more if its a good fit!), with healthy home-cooked meals, locally-harvested teas and foods, snuggles with cuddly pets, sports ad board games, and good sleeps in a unique retrofitted 1970s bus overlooking the forest. Our farmstay is best described as a truly immersive experience and is suited to a single person who want to experience the day to day realities of living in relationship to the land and participating in family life, focused on the values of deep ecology, Indigenous wisdom and reconciliation, decolonization, magic, seasonal living, and imagining into a beautiful and safe world for future generations.

We live on 3 acres of mixed crop fields, woods, ponds, fruit trees, gardens-in-the-making and a lovely skyline. This is the fourth property we have hosted helpers on, and it’s our favorite way of 'staying home' while connecting to the world. We grow hemp in the fields and food in the garden using permaculture and regenerative land practices. We also have a sweet dog, a cat, and from time to time some different farm animals.

We love hosting as it brings different cultures, worldviews, languages, art, cooking and friendships into our lives when we have stopped travelling in favor of a localized land-based life.

Our family is mixed indigenous and european descent. Staying with us you'll learn about indigenous resurgence, Canada's colonial history and the current work of reconciliation, and being a good visitor in relationship to the land you are on. You'll also have the opportunity to learn about permaculture, organic gardening and hemp farming. We are an alternative family who focuses our energy away from mainstream culture and values, and towards a life-sustaining society that promotes collective liberation, diversity, inclusivity, resilience, holistic health practices, and deconstructing the patriarchal, white supremacist extractive capitalist systems of oppression that impact us all. We do this through compassionate inquiry and a trauma-informed approach.

We are the #83 bus route and can lend a bike. We also offer to take you on adventures such as forest walks, town trips, and beach trips. Nearby you’ll find parks and trails, the world-famous Butchart Gardens, ocean access with kayak and paddle board rentals, coffee shops, thrift stores and more.

Typically, we ask for help with routine garden, farm, and homestead tasks. These can include shoveling dirt, compost and wood chips, weeding the fields and pulling invasive plants from the woodlands, trail and path maintenance, plant care (pest checking, fertilizing etc.), fence maintaining, general yard care, and seasonal household chores. Lots of shovel work.
Inside the kitchen is a constant work zone and we usually ask for daily contributions to kitchen help.
Up to 20-30% of hours may be household cleaning projects, and sometimes we may ask you to do random once a season chores like cleaning a vehicle, doing a freezer inventory and so on.
Our kids, age 9 and 12, also appreciate if you spend some time with them sharing your skills and passions or engaging in one of their favourite activities such as art, music, basketball, soccer, Uno, chess, lego or boardgames.
Basically, you’ll be involved in every aspect of running a family homestead! And in everything we ask you to do, we usually share a teaching or two about WHY as it relates to permaculture, regenerative and restorative land stewardship, and inter-species relationships!
If you are an artist or healer we can discuss reducing hours of homestead work in exchange for your skills.

Your “room” is a small retro Mercedes bus with access to bathroom, kitchen and living room in family house a few meters away.
We offer healthy whole foods (minimal packaged or ready-made items), and ask you to purchase any special items we don’t normally supply. We eat minimal wheat & dairy, and try and only eat sustainable and ethically raised/harvested animal products.
We have some water challenges and provide instructions on saving water, including limiting showers to five minutes once a day.

Our place is best suited for people who truly want an immersive west coast family farm experience. We expect workawayers to be resourceful, independent, mature, healthy, courteous, and adaptable. We generally do NOT like to host people who want to spend all the free time in their rooms or online, or people who do not have an ethic of reciprocity and responsibility.

We offer references to those seeking jobs in Canada and worldwide and have provided reference letters and reference phone calls to many of our helpers.

She would offer lots of tips on the best way to complete tasks, both for efficiency and for my physical and mental wellbeing, which I really appreciated. I loved seeing her passion for her garden and for the natural world as a whole, and I'm so grateful that she shared her knowledge and experience with me. I have learnt so much more about the world around me, and have begun to practice a new way of being present in, and relating to, nature as a result of my time there.

My stay was slightly different to usual as Kirsten went away for a couple of weeks, so it was just me, Blake and the boys. Blake is a very calming presence, incredibly knowledgeable and a fantastic storyteller. I felt very comfortable, and was able to be very self-directed in the work I did, as he was super flexible and relaxed. Asher and Nahko are very sweet and mature, and it was a real pleasure to hang out with them (the endless games of ball tag only tired me out very slightly I swear;). They are super respectful, creative and helpful around the property, and it was really inspirational to see the values they are being raised with and the positive impact they are already making in the world.

I completed a wide variety of tasks throughout my stay (weeding, watering, sifting & shovelling compost, harvesting flowers & fruit, clearing the forest trail, clipping back bushes, stringing up tomatoes in the greenhouse, drying herbs, freezer inventory and more). Kirsten left me with a list of tasks to do and clear instructions, so I could choose how to organise my days and when to complete my hours which I really liked. The work was really enjoyable and generally not too physically demanding (and even when it was, they encouraged me to break it up with less demanding tasks in-between so it was fine). I was expected to be mostly responsible for keeping the kitchen clean and organised, and I often helped Blake with meal prep when Kirsten was away. I felt that this effort was really appreciated, and Blake incorporated any extra things I helped out with into my hours so it never felt unfair. Food was always provided and I was encouraged to help myself to snacks and tea (they have an incredible tea selection) whenever I wanted, which was very kind of them. I had my own bedroom with a comfy bed, and I often had lots of free time in the afternoon and evening to spend how I liked (hanging in the hammock was awesome).

Kirsten very generously lent me her bike, so I was able to explore lots of the surrounding area this way. It's very navigable if you don't mind some hills. There are lots of beautiful lakes, beaches, hikes and inlets nearby. Kirsten took me to Durrance Lake a couple of times, which is a great swimming spot with a beautiful forest trail. Elk Lake, Island View Beach and Todd Creek Inlet are worth a visit and all accessible by bike. Sidney is reachable by bike and bus, and has lots of cute charity shops, book stores and cafes (plus a pier), and Victoria is also nearby. I hiked up Mount Work and Bear Hill (much shorter option if you're just in search of a good view). I also got to go to a free mini music festival in Victoria and a night market just outside the city, so it's worth checking facebook events (or community pages) to see if there's anything fun going on during your days off.

The Hunters live with the cutest dog, cat and llama! who provided lots of cuddles and entertainment and really enriched my stay:) (Edmund not so much with the cuddles, but that's ok).
I really had the best time staying with this family and would absolutely recommend to anyone who is interested in learning more about farming, self-sufficiency and indigenous eco-centric philosophies in amongst a beautiful landscape, immersed in wholesome family life.

Kirsten and Blake are very mindful people who value attentiveness, general awareness, and open communication. They are constantly creating an inspiring life for… read more themselves and their two kids - in touch with themselves and the world around them. Kirsten is extremely well organized and communicates clearly which makes working and living together very easy. Depending on the season and what has been done beforehand, different tasks may come up. During my 6 weeks, I've helped a lot around the garden (weeding, cutting, planting, harvesting, processing) but also in the kitchen, with Asher and Nahko, and with the pets.
You can tell they have had a lot of experience with other helpers. They know what works for them but are also open to adjust according to the helper's needs.

While the work in the garden needs to be done, this Workaway experience is way more than just that! They're very attentive and caring people. I've always felt like my presence has been appreciated and my well-being valued. Again, it's a lot about honest communication and a shared interest in each other! We have gotten along very well and have spent a lot of time together - preparing and sharing meals, going to events, enjoying a swim in the lake or ocean, going out kayak-ing/SUP-ing, going for walks and hikes. I've always enjoyed the shared moments and the numerous deep and thought-provoking conversations we've had.

For me, this beautiful family is in the centre of my memorable experience! But, some more "basic" information that might be interesting for future helpers:
The family's home is located a bit north of Victoria. There are bus stops close-by with day passes of $5 allowing you to visit, for instance, downtown Victoria or Sidney. The latter has some cute book and thrift stores which are worth checking out! There are also Butchart Gardens and the Horticulture Centre close-by if you're into garden and plants. Moreover, Kirsten has a bike which I was allowed to use. So, it's easy exploring the area on your own. To give you some ideas: Brentwood bay, Island View Beach, and Elk/Beaver Lake :-) Your room is really spacious and comfortable and Kirsten is a great cook. So, there's plenty of delicious and nutritious meals waiting for you!

I do believe parts of my personality were a bit triggering for Kirsten (she has a very organized brain that needs structure/systems ) which resulted in some helpful feedback for me as a more creative type trying to learn new life skills. After the initial delivery of feedback it became more personal and less welcomed criticism . Because of the open atmosphere and we’re all emotionally aware adults, we could work it out. Overall I think it was a learning opportunity and that they really do appreciate the work you do for them.

I enjoyed the tasks I was given and found them pretty simple . Some were physically more demanding but nothing was super hard. Lots of landscaping, clearing blackberry bushes and walking trails , working with compost, watering gardens , harvesting tomatoes and raspberries, and lots of hemp processing which was new and interesting for me . Blake is really passionate about it.

You are expected to be the main person cleaning the kitchen and dishes every morning and night but they do provide a lot of healthy delicious meals ( +coffee) and are super accommodating. The bed is SO comfy too like better than my bed at home lol

You get time off at various points of the day. The property is not huge so there aren’t many places to hide, unless you have a car. They did have a bike, and there are busses , but they live on a busy road . This is why I think a car would be nice although I was totally able to manage lots of enjoyable free time without it

While I was here we got to experience swimming in bioluminescent water ( so magical ) which was one of the highlights :D. There are ocean inlets nearby, where I went kayaking, a really beautiful lake I went to on my afternoon off ( way better than the ponds of Ontario. Haha) , I climbed Mount Work by myself one day and nobody was at the top that was a cool moment, we went to a Coast Salish art class with the boys, I got to explore Victoria and went to one of my favourite skateparks there. Also had the best salmon of my life while here and lots of nourishing meals and conversation .

I’m glad I came . Thank you guys for everything !
