  • Description

Hi, I'm Marissa! After working professionally in NYC for the past six years, I decided to take a career break to pursue one of my favorite activities full time - sailing! I've been sailing for about six years on J24s with my local club in NYC. I wanted to challenge myself and explore what a career in sailing might look like so I started out this summer in the UK where I spent two months and picked up my RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Skipper certificate. I then volunteered as a skipper on a boat around Turkey. Then, I met up with a family on their catamaran in Northern Spain and we sailed all the way down to Gibraltar, then cross the Atlantic to the Caribbean. And that was just 2023! Looking to 2024, I'm hoping to keep traveling near the water (and on the water). While the adventures this past year have been many, the most indelible memories are of the people I met and the experiences we had together. That's why I'm so excited to join (and eventually to meet) more of the workaway community.

  • More details about your skills

Prior to sailing, I spent six years working as a project manager in NYC. I'm highly detail oriented (spreadsheets galore) and good with logistics. I also have experience managing virtual and live events with notable speakers. I worked for the City of New York in the women's economic empowerment team, so I also have experience developing social impact programs and I have significant training in racial equity and justice programs.

In addition to my professional experience, I am overall a team player, adaptable, and easy going. I'm quite tidy (you learn quickly when living with many people in a space as small as a boat!). I also love to learn and try new things and I'm always willing to help out with whatever needs doing around the boat, or house!

  • What else ...

In addition to sailing, I used to go climbing ~3x per week back home. I also love caving (which is basically just climbing, but underground!). I even ran the caving newsletter for my club back in NYC, the "Metropolitan Grotto".
