  • Description

We're a mixed-nationality family (US/Japanese), living in Japan with two wonderful younger boys (currently ages 6 and 4). We enjoy travelling and trying to bring new experiences and engage with our guys in fun and exciting ways and to build a world view for them that includes service and nature and engagement with other cultures. Myself and my wife are seasoned world travelers and always looking for new and interesting experiences!

More details about my language interests
Misato's English is fluent and has experience teaching English to Japanese speakers. She would be able to assist any ESL learner. My Japanese is moderate - I'm not at a level where I could teach, but I would be happy to assist a Japanese learner or assist them with homework/etc to the best of my ability. Because I've had experience in classroom teaching and in learning a foreign language, I can be a patient ESL learner coach/helper as well.

  • More details about your skills

I have a day job doing computer work in support of maritime maintenance (keeping ships running). Misato had a business coaching english learners and also training Japanese women on how to establish themselves as an (english) language coach and build their own business, but she's currently semi-retired as she determines her next entrepreneurial adventure and takes some time with the kids and to travel.
Aside from my work experience, I've got a significant amount of outdoor experience. I've done gardening and landscaping as part time work for a half acre plot (my father's admittedly, but I still did the work :D), and I've done quite a bit of high adventure outdoor activities such as multi-week backpacking and canoe expeditions - so I'm generally handy in outdoor settings.
Misato has mostly done office work, but is a very experienced world traveler - having recently completed a 2 month around-the-world trip where she spent time in africa and the middle east, (in addition to western europe and USA), so she's able to adapt to extreme conditions and be comfortable and move forward even in much more difficult conditions than we anticipate finding on a Workaway stay.
We are confident that most work which does not require field-specific knowledge we will be capable assisting with, and are very adaptable even to somewhat difficult or trying circumstances that some travelers would struggle with.

  • What else ...

I love board games, snow sports, latin dance, and computer games. Misato enjoys travel and discussing travel, wine tasting, entrepreneurship and discussing/encouraging it, and used to do latin dance before an ankle injury.
We've got 2 young kids travelling with us, Leon (6) and Joe (4). They're very energetic and friendly, and both of them speak and understand both English and Japanese. They've done a decent amount of travelling, and are fairly adaptable, but are certainly the most limiting factor for us as workaway-ers. We need arrangements that they can fit into.

We're especially excited about any workaway work where the kids can participate meaningfully or assist with the work in a way that grows themselves as people, but otherwise don't ask anything child-care-related of host homes other than that the space be somewhat child friendly and safe, and they be flexible in terms of allowing us to care for the children if there's an emergency when we're meant to be engaged with work and to stagger our working times such that one of us can take care of the kids as-needed.
