Description
Hi, I'm Hannele (pronounced HAH-nuh-luh), and I'm from Berkeley, California. I love singing, dancing, capoeira, ceramics and pottery, backpacking in the Sierra Nevada with my mom, climbing tall things, getting my hands dirty, swimming, spontaneous sprinting but definitely not premeditated jogging, and doing the crossword. I am passionate about novelty and movement and sunshine and learning.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, but like a surprisingly large number of Computer Scientists I know, I'm a bit of a luddite; I vastly prefer spending time outdoors and as far from technology as possible, and after a year of being a full time software developer I quit my job and moved to Montana to do seasonal trail work, which I've been doing since May 2023.
I lived in student cooperative housing in Berkeley for 3 years, which was a wonderful and transformative experience, and taught me to successfully coexist and communicate and collaborate and cohabit and many other important skills starting with the prefix 'co'. Above all it's taught me that I (and people generally, I think) need to live in a close knit community to be happy.
I'm really enjoying leading a trail work crew, but it's only a seasonal position, and I'm starting to think about what I want to do next. I've been gardening my whole life, and have worked on several organic farms in the past. Trail work provides me with the outdoor time I crave, but I miss sticking my hands in the dirt and being directly connected to my food source, and I have so much more to learn in the realm of farming. I am looking into getting back into software development part-time to save some money, so I do need wifi. I guess that makes me a 'digital nomad'.
What I have to offer:
- B-bucker chainsaw certification (qualified at a federal standard to use chainsaws to cut fallen trees)
- Wire fencing experience
- Basic knowledge of permaculture principles
- Basic carpentry skills (I am competent with most carpentry tools, but I need to be directed in terms of what to do with them; i.e. I am eager to assist with carpentry projects but can't start them myself.)
- Basic landscaping and gardening skills and knowledge
- Extensive ceramics experience
- Vegetarian cooking (I'm not vegetarian—although I generally avoid pork and beef—but I don't really know how to cook meat well)
What I would like gain experience in:
- Permaculture farming
- Food foraging
- Living off the land
- Natural food preservation methods
- Fermentation
- Beekeeping
- Controlled burns and fire ecology
- Ecosystem restoration
- Advanced carpentry
- Sustainable/alternative buildingInterests
