  • Description

Hi! Our names are Iris and Rosa Sofia (or Fia, as most call me). We are a young lesbian couple who recently graduated from the University of Michigan, and we both love the outdoors, camping/backpacking, reading, music, animals, cooking, good conversations, and learning.

Iris grew up on a small organic vegetable farm in Michigan, USA, farming and caring for cats, dogs, birds, goats, horses, and more. She is passionate about food and plants, and worked on organic farms and botanical gardens throughout college. She enjoys yoga, dancing, watercolor, and printmaking. She loves to cook and garden, and is excited to learn about agro-ecology, local natural communities, art, food, and more from people all over the world! Ella habla español a un nivel intermedio y esta deseando practicar más el idioma.

Fia grew up in New York in an English, German, and French-speaking European household, but has also spent time traveling all over the world, often visiting close family in Germany and France. She loves music and writing, and engaging with anything creative. She loves to knit and upcycle clothing through creative embellishments, embroidery, painting and dyeing. Studying and thinking about language is a passion of hers, understanding the different ways it can connect us and influence human creativity and culture—especially when traveling!

We are kind, energetic, and love meeting new people! We want to travel to expand our view of the world after four years in our college town. It's important to us to challenge ourselves in trying new things, and throw ourselves into adventurous new experiences.

We both spent our college years living in student housing co-operatives, sharing meals and housework and building a supportive community with 20-40 housemates. It was a wonderful experience--we learned a lot about home maintenance, community-wide democratic decision-making, supporting our members' different needs, and the magic that happens when dozens of of kind, fun people come together to create a home! This is our first time doing a Workaway, and we're excited to travel while continuing to live and learn cooperatively!

    - We both work as gardeners, with Fia tending to personal gardens of various clients, and Iris singlehandedly managing a large garden that grows food for a summer camp.

    - We are both passionate and adventurous cooks, excited to take on new recipes. We both have experience with cooking nutritious meals for 20+ people, taking dietary restrictions into account.

    - We have plenty of experience with various odd home projects, through living in old co-operative houses that required regular maintenance. We were responsible for large painting projects, yard work, deep cleans of kitchens, bathrooms and common spaces, and basic repairs.

    - Iris has worked as a groundskeeper, using various power tools (zero-turn lawnmowers, weedwhackers, drills, etc) and taking on large painting projects. She has worked in horticulture for 3+ years, caring for bonsai trees, maintaining native, medicinal, and display gardens, and propagating dozens of varieties of vegetable starts as Plant Sale Manager for her university campus farm.

    - Iris has 10+ years experience with daily care of horses, goats, poultry, dogs, cats, etc.

    - Fia worked for three years as an after-school teacher with children, and enjoys helping people of any age learn and have fun. She has run various educational programs and worked and played with children of all ages both in and outside of the classroom—and loves it!

    - Iris has also worked as the Food Access Manager at our university campus farm, seeding/planting/harvesting/washing organic produce, running a farm stand, managing volunteers, and distributing hundreds of pounds of food to various campus outlets.
