  • Description

    Hey There! My name is Mara, I hope I can give you a little insight into who I am and how workaway has impacted my life in the next few lines.

    My parents are both German but emigrated to Portugal before I was born. I was raised near a small fisher town in the southwest of Portugal, called Aljezur. I studied architecture in Lisbon.
    Shortly after in 2018, I went on my first work away experience through the program "WooF". First, I stayed One month at the Mahiai permaculture Farm on the Big Island, Hawaii. There I learned about permaculture principles and design. Then I stayed in Maui, Hawaii for 2 months helping out at Caroline’s Fruit and handmade jewellery Stand, wich also included a lot of fruit harvesting (bananas, coconuts, papayas..) and general yard work.
    When I came back from my travels I got curious about my parents home land and what I thought would be a summer in Germany at my grandmas ended up being five and a half years, and still counting... Im currently living in Bingen am Rhein.
    In February 2020 just before Corona... I got the itch for another work and travel experience. I escaped just in time and got to experience Sweden with my husband! First we stayed in the north, we lived off grid with neither electricity and running water In up to -26c. We spent our days ice fishing, skiing, taking care of the animals ( goats, cat, dog) dumpster diving, cooking and the main project: building a log cabin sauna.
    Then we went to the south, and did a lot of little building projects such as a Wood storage hut, a chicken coop, a goat milking table, and designed and installed a cut flower garden. Other tasks were milking and helping out making soap, bathbombs, scrums and creams.

    These experiences were my biggest teachers in life so far, I love the insight of how other people live and the connection that can be built in such a short time. I feel like it is once again time to take a fresh breath of air that this type of travel brings.

    -NATURAL DYEING
    Three years ago I started dyeing fabric with flowers, barks, wood, roots and fungi. I have an online shop on the platform Etsy and host workshops at private events and festivals. One of my biggest motivation to travel is to get to know new biospheres and the hidden colours within, I always have some fabric and mordant on me and I am more than happy to share what I know about this craft!

    -ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN
    On the other hand I also work as a freelancer for an interior design App, my main task is the programming and interface design. These two very different jobs definitely stimulate both halves of the brain! Id be happy to help out with small building projects and interior design.

    -GARDENING
    As the daughter of a gardener I started very early getting my hands dirty and taking care for plants. I don't have a garden at my current living situating so I would be more than happy to help out at yours? (;

    -LANGUAGES
    I speak fluently Portuguese, German and English. I understand written and spoken Spanish but when I speak, I sometimes throw Portuguese words in there. Happy to learn a new language!
