Hi, we are Giulia (28) and Tamar (25), two recent graduates from Milan.

Giulia's introduction:
I have recently obtained a Master of Laws Degree, with a focus on International Law, Human Rights and Environmental Law. I'm a people’s person! I love meeting people, learning about their cultures and sharing mine with others. I easily adapt to a new environment and I am not scared of challenges. I have a strong sense of community and, once I take part in a project, I give everything to complete the tasks I have been assigned.

Tamar's introduction
I'm a medical doctor from Milan. I love traveling and discover new places and cultures. Due to my studies I deeply care about others and I would love to help people, especially in the medical field. I also love children and to play with them. I have a big sense of responsibility and I am a natural curiose person.

Tamar:
- I am a recently graduated doctor, with a Masters Degree in Medicine and Surgery (University of Milan). During my studies I had the opportunity to be a student intern in several departments, the main ones being paediatrics, internal medicine, general surgery, dermatology, venerology, nephrology, ophthalmology. I deeply care about patients and their needs, always trying to create a one-to-one relationship.
- I love children and to play with them. I am available to support those with special needs or disabilities.
- I love sports and I play football in a female team in Milan. I can help to organise sports activities and to teach what I know to children.
- Finally, I am a bit of a nerd. I love maths, computer sciences and coding.
I have lived in Jerusalem for a year, where I studied maths, physics and Hebrew.

Giulia:
- During my university years I have volunteered for an international no-profit association, ELSA (European Law Students’ Association), whose mission is to promote a just world in which there is respect for human dignity and cultural diversity. Moreover, I have also volunteered as an Italian teacher for refugees for a couple of years in Busto Arsizio (a city near Milan). These experiences, combined with my studies, have helped me understand that helping others is my life and career path more than anything else, hence prompting me to apply for a volunteer project abroad.
- I have experience in tutoring and preparing lessons, applying ad hoc teaching methods according to the students’ needs.
- As I have volunteered in the professional development area of ELSA, I have experience in career guidance and coaching, helping students finding their preferred career choice, by helping them fill in college and jobs applications, write motivation letters and CVs.

Volunteering here was one of the best experiences of our lives. We enjoyed every single moment during our 4 weeks stay at the Campus thanks to the staff members and to the incredible students.

About Tamar’s experience:
As a medical doctor, I mainly joined the Hospital service. It was an incredible experience that gave me the opportunity to learn… read more from the local medical team, to get to know people living in the rural areas of Gujarat and to deepen my knowledge on the most widespread diseases there. The doctors and the nurses gave me the possibility to actively participate in their daily work, by prescribing medicines to the patients and by allowing me to conduct several medical examinations. They were all incredible and they have made me feel part of their team.
I also spent a lot of time with the students, both in class and during their free time. They are all so lovely and I had a very nice time with them! I also had the opportunity to deliver several social science classes for grade 3-5.

About Giulia’s experience:
I was actively involved in the school and I can honestly say that it was such an enriching experience. My main role was to deliver social science (history, environmental science and political science) and computer science classes for students from grade 3 to grade 8. The students have shown me a deep curiosity and interest towards those subjects and were very open to experiment with different teaching methods.
I’ve also had the possibility to join the preschool and to be a substitute teacher for older students (grades 9 to 11).
What has made my experience unforgettable was the time I’ve spend with the kids during the afternoons and evenings: I was able to join them during their sports time, movie time and during their meals, which allowed me to get to know them better, their culture and all their beautiful characters. I will treasure those moments forever!
The staff and the other teachers, especially my teachers buddies, have welcomed me with open arms and have helped me lots during my stay by letting me join their classes, giving me advice on how to prepare lessons and by engaging in conversations in the staff room.
In conclusion, I can say that the time I’ve spent here was such a rewarding experience, both professionally and personally.

General comment:
The campus is beautiful, clean and peaceful. It’s close to Tarapur, a small town full of shops, and the volunteers are able to organize short trips to buy whatever we need.
Staff members at the campus are very kind and very welcoming. They were always opened to help us and to accommodate our requests. During the weekends we were also able to make trips to close town to explore and visit temples together with the other volunteers.

Our stay at the campus was a great experience that allowed us to explore the Indian and Gujarati culture like never before. We’ve had the opportunity to fully participate in all their interesting ceremonies and activities, always feeling like part of the group.
By volunteering during the month of January, we were involved in many social work activities and celebrations (such as the Kite Festival).
The school has all the necessary equipment and facilities (textbooks, printer, papers, pens etc.).
Work was flexible and generally the work day starts around 8am and it ends around lunchtime (as a teacher).
Our room was nice and big, with a private bathroom, several beds, a bucket shower and a lovely shared balcony.
The food is abundant, tasty but spicy. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and afternoon snacks and chai are provided daily. Unfortunately, there aren’t fresh fruits and vegetables available, but it’s possible to easily find them in Tarapur.

We feel extremely satisfied with our experience here and we are definitely planning to be back!

Giulia and Tamar volunteered with us for just over 4 weeks it has been a pleasure having both in our school and our “Hospital at your door” community service.

Giulia was teaching with a lot of dedication throughout her stay with us, she started off with mainly teaching social science, history, environmental studies and political science to… read more students in standard 6, 7 and 8 and on environmental studies to 3 and 5 standards. The children have really enjoyed her lessons which have been delivered with enthusiasm as well as fun element. Giulia’s has also taken part and helped in invigilation of the Rushikumar boys during their exams. She has at short notice stepped in for absent teachers and delivered English classes in reading, listening and communication skills for grades 5 to 10. She also joined the preschool students during their classes in senior and junior kindergarten.

Our library was well over due for re-organisation and labelling which she has helped with and this will make the books categories easy to file and search for by the students and teachers. Giulia has also had the opportunity to visit and spend several afternoons with the Hospital at your Door team and they have really enjoyed her company.

Tamar as a doctor joined our Hospital at your door community service which provides primary health care to 35 surrounding villages each week. She is a very dedicated and conscious doctor who spent each mornings and afternoons with the team at different rural villages assisting the doctors in visiting patients, measuring their blood pressure, prescribing appropriate medicines and contributing to the way primary care is delivered in rural villages. Tamar took the lead and worked independently during the visiting hours at the hostel for boys.

Tamar helped us by working on a pamphlet on breast cancer awareness which will be distributed to the patients and will be displayed/distributed in the ambulatories. Tamar also delivered environmental studies and computer science lesson to students in grades 3 to 5.

Both Tamar and Giulia have contributed immensely in the afternoon/evening activities at the hostel: during their stay they have been involved with the students and their daily activities by taking part in their sports time during the afternoon, movies in the evening, library time during the weekends. Both have played an active part in all the cultural events, festival and all the Social projects throughout their entire stay.

The children, teachers and all the staff will miss both and we hope they will return so see the progress of the children and the further development of our Hospital at your Door Service. We wish both in their travels in India and their careers.
