  • Description

Hello we are Jim and Rahel.

Hi, its Rahel. I'm 22 years old and from Germany, grew up near the lake of Constance but ended up in Heidelberg for now. I’m studying biology since last year but I’ve decided to switch to physics, since I realized that it gives me somehow a better understanding of the world and how everything works.

I am eager to see new places and I want to find ways to give something back, maybe in form of help and my capabilities I already have or maybe learn new ones which I hope I can teach someone I will meet someday.

Altogether I am a calm, empathetic and uncomplicated character. Due to the fact that the alps are close by, i have often been hiking in the mountains with my parents and friends since i was a child and every time i rediscover how much i appreciate the tranquility of nature and the beautiful places you find on the way. One day I want to learn to fly in some way, either a small beaver plane or paragliding and also climb mountains in the morning to enjoy the first coffee with a morning sun view and finish hiking the Padjelanta leden in Sweden and furthermore see the northern or southern lights properly.

    Hey, I am Jim
A little bit about myself and my motivation:
I am 24 years old, grew up in a little village in the southern black forest, Germany.
Initially, I made an apprenticeship as a graphic designer and worked there for some time, but eventually got really unhappy in it. I love being creative, but I hated selling it. And so I moved on to a little journey to find something new. In these one and a half years I was gifted to put my time and interest into learning new things like mathematics, coding and electronics from scratch. Planting and harvesting the first self grown vegetables and trying all kinds of new things. This journey also introduced me to Workaway the first time. It led me to people who taught me how to chop wood, use a chainsaw and most important showed me how to have a life that is, most of the time, a bit different. Different in a way of special places to live in, special principles to live after, and special perceptions of happiness and freedom. These impressions always had a lasting impression on me.

After my little journey, I decided to settle for something safe and started studying engineering two years ago.
In my free time I enjoy reading, hiking, photography, snowboarding, gardening and just being in places with a nice view.
My joy of life comes from little moments like a coffee in the morning with a view, a sunset on a mountain or a (crappy) meal after a long day of hiking. In addition, finishing projects together like a fresh painted wall, a mucked out room, or a fresh harvest make me feel complete.

    Working and living together:
I’d describe myself as a calm, relaxed and very friendly person. I'm really interested in the special subjects every person cares about. And as much as I enjoy talking and learning from people, I enjoy being for myself.

I like to share and help people, so I'd be happy to teach you computer things like programming or photography, for example. While not working in the industry anymore I can still build websites or design all kind of things print or digital for you.
Besides that, I really enjoy gardening work and also happen to like weeding in the sun. In addition, I'm really interested in fermentation and soil health right now.
While not being a professional yet I have basic knowledge about electricity and programming so if you’d have a project and give me a heads up I could get into that.
When I'm working, I'm really trying to do my job responsible and the best I can.

  • More details about your skills

    Jim:
Through my apprenticeship as a graphic designer and my work experience as a webdesigner I can do most of the things that come with that f.e. creating corporate designs, designing all kind of of products like posters, flyers, menus and websites. Im also firm with Wordpress pages and have an understanding of the usual web programming languages.
Besides that I can take and edit professional photos and im working as a video editor from time to time.
While I don't have an apprenticeship in these skills I have basic skills in gardening and crafts like woodwork, to say I am firm the needed tools to get the job done.
In addition I have experience of (very unsuccessfully) growing foods hydroponically and programming different controls, sensor measurements with the Arduino platform.
I am eager to learn practical and mechanical things and if you teach me what to do I'm happy and thankful to learn. I'm not picky about work and I'll work the best I can.

    Rahel:
As a child of two gardeners I´m familiar with garden work and know a thing or two about different vegetables and what´s important for them to grow properly. In addition a few years ago my dad build a greenhouse and started working on a permaculture project, also with the idea of a movable/sliding greenhouse to cover changing seedbeds and grow vegetables longer. I find these ideas fascinating and I'd really like to work on further projects like this.
Because of my Waldorf school, I have basic skills in crafts areas like blacksmithing, bookbinding, wicker basketry and all kinds of sewing, embroidery and knitting and I think I can teach a little as well if I remember. My father is a woodworker, so since i was little I was surrounded by and have worked with wood and tools, for example building shelves or gluing table tops, i can handle electric drill and plane etc. During my stay I Canada I learned to do firewood and work with a chainsaw and axe and learned to drive with a ATV/quad.
I'm interested in learning more about gardening and also mechanical skills and carpentry/construction.
Right know I´m working as an Barista in a specialty coffee café, so I learned a lot about coffee and how to make a good one, just in case you like coffee :).
I like to work with all that stuff and exchange knowledge to understand more and new connections and I'm happy to get to know new skills.
