#1 Who am I?

I am from Austria, where I am currently living. I am passionate about languages, wildlife, photography and intercultural exchange and learning. I am a curious mind, scientist by nature, and love contrasts. I enjoy being in the outdoors, the wide, exposed to the power of untouched nature - that's where I thrive!

#2 What can I contribute to your projects?

I would be happy to contribute - and learn - anything related to languages, cultural exchange, research, tourism, photography, creativity, law, cooking and culinary experiences, building projects, wildlife, farming and nature conservation.

#3 What are my goals?

I wish to gain life skills and experience abroad, including physical work, such as construction and maintenance, outdoor and survival skills. Ultimately, my goal is to change my career from being a lawyer into the tourism sector, where I can live up to my full potential and benefit from my intercultural skills. My big dream is to - one day - build an eco lodge

More details about my language interests
I am fluent in German, which is my mother tongue, as well as in Spanish and English. I am also quite advanced in Afrikaans and usually strive to learn at least the basics of the languages spoken in the places I go to. I have substantial experience in language exchange. I really enjoy the tandem-style of language learning, i.e., to mutually teach and learn the language of another person being a native speaker of that language. To me, this is the most natural, effective and beneficial form of language and intercultural learning.

Professionally, I have a background in law, where I hold a doctoral degree. I have working experience in the scientific/academic context, in courts, in the private sector and development finance.

I am an experienced wildlife photographer, which I have been practicing especially on my numerous trips to the wilderness of Southern Africa and Central America

I have been visiting Namibia for many years as a tourist, but this time I wanted to experience the country and its people in a different way. I wanted to immerse myself in local life and cultures, learn new skills far away from modern life's comfort and amenities and to grow as a person. That was exactly what I found on Didi's and her family's… read more Farm in Namibia.

In a very uncomplicated and effortless communication, Didi invited me to the Farm, accomodated my arrival and departure and did everything to make the transportation logistics as smooth as possible.

I stayed for roughly one month on the farm, during the months of January and February, which is rainy season in Namibia.

Didi, her husband and her three sons are unique and caring individuals and you can learn so much from them. For me, they are an example of a functioning family, where everyone has their place and their role and knows about it. The friendly dogs only add to this picture. I got to know many wonderful people and their culture, which for me personally is one of the most enriching experiences.

What are some of the things you can learn, experience and take away from your farm stay?

On the farm, you get to know the essence of a basic and purposeful lifestyle in harmony with untouched nature. You gain invaluable insights into building a functional infrastructure and to improvise with what is available. You get to appreciate water as a source of life and to cherish rain - you really celebrate a good rainfall with the family which is so important for a Namibian farm. You learn to take responsibility - mainly for yourself and for the project you choose to work on while you are there.

How does a typical day on the farm look like for a workawayer?

There are so many things to do on the farm. As you are in nature, every day might be different. Didi lets you choose your project you will work on during your farm stay. I chose to rework the garden, build a stone garden with material available on the farm and with the help of other workawayers, and I planted grass. Planting grass in the desert for me personally was a very meaningful endeavour. The family happily invites you to share their meals with them. Remember that in Namibia meat is a staple food.

Who would I recommend this experience to?

If you are looking for a break, where your mind, soul and body can take a breath, where you get to know yourself, your capabilities and also your limits better, if you want to contribute to building something that lasts in a very original place in nature, if you want personal growth - then you should consider this experience. You should be aware that this is pure nature, which always requires the due respect, caution and reasonable preparation. Also, you should consider to come without rigid expectations, but rather be open for new experiences and embrace the chance of learning to appreciate the essentials and above all - a wonderful cultural exchange. This might all sound quite abstract, but you will definitely understand, when you were there.
