  • Description

    Hello!

We're Andrew and Julia. We met while traveling Europe and are on our way to Canada together. :)

    Andrew here!
I'm a musician/farmer/carpenter. I love traveling and rounding out my perspective through learning from others' experiences. I'm hoping to have some amazing, mutually positive experiences in 2023!

I grew up on a farm where I learned a lot of practical skills including welding, animal husbandry, carpentry, mechanics. I’m many different things ranging from a musician, carpenter, real estate investor, to nomad but I’m consistently a human with all the inherent beauty and flaw.

A few years ago I started learning about Permaculture and natural building which has sent me an unexpected journey. I purchased 100 year old dairy barn on Route 66 on a small holding in Oklahoma and I've spent the past year and a half restoring it to its former glory. I'd love to bring the skills and knowledge I've acquired to your project.

I’m passionate about living intentionally and harmoniously. My focus is on building friendships and community and learning. I want to surround myself with people I care about and who care about me. I find that the most valuable thing in life is the people I choose to share it with (though sometimes it's easy to forget).

Being self employed for several years taught me how to find the balance of efficiency, effectiveness, and joy in my work. I prefer to work autonomously and solve problems on my own although I know that requires a certain amount of credibility that must be earned. I am definitely open to adopting the work structure that you prefer. I know you will come to find me reliable and competent at producing excellent results when given some responsibility.

Music is a big part of my life. I play guitar and/or piano everyday because it brings a lot of joy to my life.

I have a daily yoga practice this is important to me.

I’m hoping to find an opportunity to help on a small farm or small village where my skills will be of use.

I find that I need to eat meat in order to stay healthy and to have enough energy to work as hard as I do.

I’m looking forward to utilizing my skills in a meaningful way. I receive a lot of fulfillment out of helping others complete their projects and I know that positive energy will come back around to me in the future.

    It's Julia!
I'm a midwife working in a very small hospital in the mountains of Switzerland. At the moment I travel for half a year to see and learn new things before I will see where life and my midwifery work will lead me.

I grew up in the region of Berne in the countryside in a house our family renovated during my childhood. I loved helping and learned a lot during that time. Also, I worked at my dads company as an electrician for several years during highschool holidays.

Today my heart belongs to midwifery and women's/families health. I would love to start working independently as a midwife the next few years to be able to provide a familycentered, empowered, safe and natural pregnancy care, childbirth and postpartum care for becoming families.

My freetime I spend mostly in the mountains of Switzerland. During summertime with hiking, rock climbing, gardening and helping friends with wild haying on the Alp. My fascination for naturopathy and medicinal plants fits well with the mountain landscape in Switzerland and you can often find me collecting herbs until the first snow comes. In winter season I love to snowboard near where I live and to have time for creativity.

I'm new here on work away and exited for the new experience!

    All the best!

    Julia and Andrew

  • More details about your skills

I (Andrew) have a lot of experience with farm related tasks and construction techniques, including wood framed structures and some knowledge of/experience with natural building techniques.

I know carpentry skills are in high demand and I’m happy to help. I’ve done many remodel jobs and custom handyman work including plumbing, carpentry, and finish work. I’ll include some photos.

I owned a real estate brokerage for 3 years. And during that time I had people working underneath me. I have a lot of experience facilitating negotiations and communication between people.

    Skills include:
    Gardening
    Carpentry
    Welding
    Natural building
    Heavy machinery operation
    Mechanic work on older vehicles/atv’s
    Permaculture knowledge and experience

I’ve owned several older vehicles that I worked on myself. I’m comfortable with a wrench in my hand.

I’ve been studying Spanish for the past 5 years off and on. My Spanish is good enough to get me around and have basic interactions but I’m by no means fluent. I find the challenge of speaking another language very enjoyable. I'm currently learning French.

I included some photos of a building project I completed in Hawaii. It was a large covered porch. I trained other volunteers who had never used power tools and they helped me. The host helped me some when he had time but mostly I completed it alone including ordering and acquiring materials.
