Katja stayed with us for two weeks and was such a wonderful workaway. She and Jared transformed our garden by trimming, weeding, and doing light landscaping jobs. Katja is super friendly and she helped around the house whenever asked and took pride in the jobs she was doing at our home. I can't thank her enough for changing our garden from a garden of weeds to a beautiful garden we can enjoy over the summer. We also had the chance to share some music and she is a beautiful singer too! Highly recommend her for any future workaways.

I wanted to take the time to write this calmly, because you deserve every single one of my words, and because I want any volunteer who feels the desire to help and is thinking about going to Uganda to read this and trust that it is an incredible decision. I’m not entirely sure how I ended up choosing Uganda, but it was 100% because of Samuel and Lucy. Without even knowing them, they made me feel that this was exactly the place I needed to go to help. Not only was this the best experience of my life (and if you’re reading this, I believe you’re like me—something inside you has been lit and wants to help), but I am leaving with a family. The volunteer experience was beautiful. The children are incredible; they have so much love and so much to give. They want to help, they want to braid your hair, they want to play, they want to be with you. And they are happy just doing that. The teachers helped us at every moment—always attentive, supportive, and smiling. And Samuel, Lucy, their children, Jade, Ibra… they truly became my family. The only thing I can think about now that I’m leaving is that I will definitely be coming back. And if you’re reading this, don’t hesitate to go and help. These children don’t only need our support, they also need visibility in the world. And we can give them that. We can make a difference and help make their lives a little happier. I love you all deeply, and I’ll see you in less than a year 🤍

Lara & Tony's was my first workaway experience and I couldn't have hoped for a lovelier family to stay with. Lara, Tony and their two daughters are incredibly nice and welcoming. From family dinners to cricket games, choir recitals and just chilling in front of the TV, they made me feel like I was home away from home which was exactly what I needed at this point of my trip. The work I had to do was incredibly fair. I'm really glad I could ease up the load a little in their busy schedule. The cherry on top of an already great cake, this amazing property, with views of the Coromandel and native birds stopping for a visit (thanks again Lara for the birdwatching lesson, I really appreciated it). I could have easily spent hours staring at the views and listening to the birds chirping. If you're looking to escape from the city for a bit, you can without hesitation choose Lara and Tony's slice of paradise. They'll introduce you to great wine, make a mean barbecue and are just kind people all around.

Thank you to Maree and Steven for such a truly wonderful stay. From the very first day, it was clear that the space had been thoughtfully prepared for Workawayers, which allowed us to feel comfortable and at ease right away. Although we shared the house with other Workawayers, our family — including our two children — was able to spend nearly a month there in a very comfortable and pleasant environment. The tasks were mainly simple and manageable, such as taking care of the two lovely cats and doing some gardening. This made it easy to maintain a good balance between helping out and spending quality time together as a family. We were also grateful for the opportunity to take part in local community activities. This became a meaningful and educational experience not only for our children, but for us as parents as well. In addition, we were fortunate to spend a few days in Newcastle. Being able to explore the city and enjoy walks along the beaches as a family was something we truly appreciated, especially as it had been a long time since we last enjoyed sightseeing together. Communication throughout the stay was smooth and reassuring. Using Messenger made it easy to ask questions or share any concerns right away, which helped us feel well supported at all times. Maree kindly involved us in activities such as Christmas decorations and painting, and actively encouraged interaction among the Workawayers. Both Maree and Steven also took the time to speak kindly and directly with our children, creating an environment where they could learn and grow through everyday interactions. As parents, this was something we truly appreciated. This stay was a warm, well-organised, and deeply enriching experience for our entire family, and one we will always remember. Maree and Steven are generous, caring hosts, and we would highly recommend them to anyone considering a Workaway experience.

Volunteering with Zheni at her hotel was an amazing experience. Herself and Max have created such a special space in El transito and we feel very privileged to have been a part of it. We spent our days leading Yoga sessions for the wonderful guests and taking Kaya (Zheni's gorgeous dog) for her sunset walks. The sunsets at El transito are remarkable! Outside of this we enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the surroundings and surfed on the amazing break on the beach right in front. Zheni, Max, and the whole team were beyond welcoming, great communicators and all around fantastic people. Thank you for making our time in Nicaragua so memorable. We will miss you all.

I stayed at Ezekiel's pausada for a month. Everything was great. We had a very pristine and clean beach and a mirante to watch the sunset. I found amazing scenes and good friends. I created 16 works for the pausada's rooms and helped prepare breakfast.

Eleanor stayed with us for two weeks and helped out with gardening and painting projects. She happily took on what we asked of her. She was lovely to have around the place — easy to get along with and respectful of our space. We really enjoyed having her stay and would happily recommend her to other hosts.

Sarah and Mona are both lovely girls with good English and we had no problems communicating with each other. They followed instructions perfectly and made a great job of cleaning, prepping, sanding and painting around our house. They were respectful and also helpful in the house and our two dogs enjoyed playing with them. They got to go on a few walks in the bush and at the river and also enjoyed swimming at our local beach. They even experienced deep sea fishing out in our boat and caught fish for our dinner. Good luck in your travels around New Zealand girls.

Hugues and Louis are nice young men, who fit into our lifestyle very easily. They were polite and engaging and we enjoyed our chats over dinner!! They worked hard and were always punctual for agreed start times, as well as being respectful of our property and privacy. They were quite motivated to take advantage of the beautiful Nelson Tasman area in their free time and we were impressed that Hugues had the skills to replace their car's brake pads on their last day - perhaps we missed an opportunity for some mechanical work while they were here?! We would thoroughly recommend Hugues and Louis for any future Workaway opportunities.

We were so lucky that Breno from Michigan USA, stayed with us for one week, at the beginning of December 2025. That was NOT long enough! I read his previous Hosts review and she said "If Breno asks to stay with you, just say yes!". So I did and he was amazing! Breno ticks all the boxes of a perfect Workawayer. He is hard working, eager, tidy, polite, considerate, quick learner and a dedicated Workawayer. He is so appreciative of any small thing you can do to make his stay enjoyable. He was up early every morning to check on the traps and move stock with Martin. Breno was such a big help clearing gutters around our house. He made space in one of the raised garden areas and planted many daisy plants. He watered these plants every day to ensure they got a good start to life. He was very capable at Halter Training the 6 Highland calves. And Breno nearly completed "release weeding" the plants in the fenced off septic tank area. That is a big job and Brenos time was limited with us. It was our pleasure to share a Whitebait Fritter with Breno at a "picnic by the pond", on the recently completed little house and deck. We 100% recommend Breno to further Hosts. His time in NZ was short but fingers crossed he will return.

Lydia (& Ed but he was working) was my first work-away experience, and it was wonderful! I was there for three and a half weeks, and she even let me manage the farm alone for a week since she had planned to visit friends. During that time, I looked after her beloved dog and her chickens. I learned how to harvest potatoes, elderberries, chamomile, and beans. I weeded and decorated her flowerbed with stones. Lydia and Ed have an adorable two-year-old son, whom I sometimes looked after for a few hours while Lydia was out shopping or working. Lydia cooked delicious meals twice a day. She also took me to visit friends and family, and I was even allowed to participate in her yoga classes (which I really enjoyed). Lydia also taught me a lot about different bird species, and you can watch kangaroos from her kitchen window! There's also a lake nearby where we went swimming together. We also took other trips together. Oh, and I didn't have a car, so I was kindly picked up from the train station. The cabin I stayed in was incredibly cozy, offering plenty of privacy and even having its own kitchen! I highly recommend a stay with Lydia and Ed to anyone who needs a break from the city. It was very welcoming, and I felt very comfortable. Thank you, Lydia, for everything. I wish you and your family all the best.💖

It truly was a wonderful week. She actively played with the children, who took to her in no time at all. Since she left home, the children have been looking very lonely. She was incredibly patient with family members who aren't very confident in English, communicating clearly using both English and Japanese. I was delighted that you showed such deep interest in Japanese culture and asked so many questions. We were able to share our respective cultures and perspectives, and to respect each other. Though it was only a week, she somehow became like family. She was also an excellent cook, and mealtimes were always filled with enjoyable conversation. It was a truly memorable experience. Thank you very much indeed.

Many, many thanks for the wonderful time with you, Jonathan, Teresa, Alicia, and your friends on the Finca, and for the consistently good vibes! Even though I spent almost half of the time sick in bed with a cold and unfortunately didn’t get to do everything I would have liked, I was still able to gather many beautiful experiences. From countless evenings around the campfire, the delicious Moroccan food Jonathan’s friends regularly invited me to, to the many great conversations about life. The tasks are really not challenging, and if you don’t have much energy, it’s taken very lightly. I was able to help with the olive harvest for the first time, on a mountainside with a beautiful view! This was a bit more physically demanding and took the whole day, which made the following days very relaxed, apart from feeding and taking care of the animals. I also got insights into the process of turning olives into finished olive oil. Of course, a tasting was a must :D Life on the farm and in the camper is very rustic and might take some time getting used to for city people, but you adapt quickly. In winter it can get quite cold, so you should come prepared. If you arrive with your own car, it’s definitely easier to get around, but it’s also possible without one, as there is a bus in the village just around the corner. All in all, I am simply very grateful for the four weeks I was able to spend on the Finca and I’m already looking forward to coming back in the future! Muchas gracias!

On a little driving tour around WA state, Ollie and Hannah stopped to stay for a few days, but when the opportunity arose for them to stay longer, we were thrilled and they ended up staying ten days. These two are intelligent, kind, easy going, and genuine—just the kind of people we love to get to know! This beautiful couple were so pleasant to have around, and from the start they both jumped in to help with various projects around the house. Among other things, they harvested a wheelbarrow full of beets and carrots, dismantled our garden irrigation and fencing (Ollie did most of that single-handedly), and prepped the garden beds for winter. A lot of that involved muscles and tenacity (getting weeds out of the strawberry bed is no easy task), yet they wanted to help and did so with gusto. They helped in the house, too, and cleaned out our car—I still think of them with appreciation every morning when I drive to school, into the sun, and can see through a clean windshield! They were up for all of it: the projects as well as the fun, such as hikes, playing games, going to a couple concerts, and even coming to my school to see an assembly and get a tour. They explored the great outdoors and chilled out at home—and it was a pleasure for me to return home, after long days as school, and be greeted by them. Their timing was perfect, too, as we had another guest at the time and they all seemed to click instantly (in great part because Ollie and Hannah are simply comfortable to be around!). We treasured our time getting to know these two with their bright yet gentle personalities. Trustworthy, capable, hardworking, independent thinkers, they are enjoyable to have around and we recommend them to you! Hannah and Ollie, we look forward to seeing you again and welcome you back anytime!

Thank you so much for everything you did for me. Your family was incredibly kind and caring, and you always asked if there was anything I needed. Whenever I had a problem, you helped me right away, which made me feel safe and comfortable every single day. Thanks to you, I was able to have so many wonderful experiences. I learned not only about working with animals, but also about life and English, and I will carry those lessons with me. I truly hope to come back someday — that’s how special this experience and your family were to me. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart.

Hui Ying and Brandon are the very best of Workawayers. They are both adaptable, equable, pleasant, punctual, hard-working, tidy, well-read and informed. They impressed me with their adaptability & acceptance of different ways. Two terrific people.
