This was my first Workaway experience, and I'm not sure where I go from here, as it will be a very difficult act to follow. The house and gardens of Giuseppe and Cornelia are magical, as is the location in a medieval village in the Sabine hills north of Rome. For five hours each day my tasks included work in the gardens and olive groves, from pruning roses to repairing nets for the olive harvest. I visited the olive mill with Giuseppe and was given a fascinating insight into the process, including a tasting of the oil we had just harvested. Food was provided, by way of a weekly shopping trip to Poggio Mirteto, a nearby local town, accessible by bus, with all amenities, including excellent pizza and gelato. My stay was made even more special by the bonhomie of my fellow workawayers - what larks! Grazie mille Don G and Cornelia. I hope to see you again soon.

I stayed at the camp for 10 days solo. It was amazing. People were very nice to me and I felt super safe. The job is quite easy, just keeping company to guests, contacting the bookings and sharing some posts online on Instagram and Facebook. Salman has very pure heart and helped me with everything. I partecipated on so many Jeep tour while here that I fell in love with this place. Nature, Relax and Peace. I totally recommend it. Food was delicious. Be prepared to drink a lot of tea!

I spent five weeks in Bormes les Mimosas during November and December. I was busy in the garden for three hours a day starting in the early morning. My tasks included weeding, pruning, planting cuttings, tidying, and some work in the house on the few rainy days I experienced. The garden is very well stocked including a variety of planting, from roses to succulents, not to mention the many citrus trees full of fragrant ripening fruit. The village can be easily reached from the house, whilst I was there, a cafe was open and a small shop, the nearest supermarket is about 20 minutes away on foot. The small port of Lavandou has many shops and restaurants, and I managed to swim in the sea on several afternoons. The accommodation is comfortable and well equipped. I'd highly recommend 'le bon vivre' in this beautiful place.

If Kevin and Tracey apply to join you as a volunteer, do not hesitate to invite them. They are a gift. I wanted to meet them from the moment they wrote to me. They were bicycling from Athens through Europe to the south of France. That kind of independence is exactly what we need. When we spoke and they told me what skills and talents they had to offer, I knew they would be an great fit with our lifestyle. They are hard working, easy going, intelligent, joyful, attentive to detail, observant, and supportive. They are valuable community members. Kevin is extremely skilled in the kitchen, and is comfortable in any cooking situation. He helped us organize some projects, and developed his own project, that we will forever remember him by: three sets of outdoor staircases (over 100 meters). His execution of the outdoor projects was thoughtful and elegant, and he worked with our groundskeeper to cut down a tree and chop the wood to his specifications. In the evening, he came in to bake delicious cookies (he gave me the recipe)! Or, to make a chicken stew, a beef bourguinon, a mushroom soup...all delicious. You get it. He's a gift. Tracey, is Kevin's equal in every sense. She is a talented seamstress who turned miles of expensive Belgian linen into elegant lined curtains for our salon during the course of her stay and helped me organize a future project (for when she will hopefully return). She works hard and is very organized. She was a daily help with laundry, kitchen, and appliance maintenance, and gave our oven a super deep cleaning that still shines. She organized all our sewing materials (machine, thread, needles, utilities, fabric) in one place where they will live forever, and tidied up our laundry and cleaning utility room. Our life is so much easier because of her contributions. We learned valuable lesson from Kevin and Tracey, and look forward to their return. Thank you, Kevin and Tracey, for your time with us!

I stayed with Deborah and Thomas for five weeks and had an amazing experience! From the start I was welcomed into their lively household, and felt at home the entire time. They introduced me to classic french films and recipes, and speaking French with Deborah and Thomas helped me improve so much, while the kids kept me laughing in both languages. Most days I dropped Andrea off at school, and helped with some jobs around the house, including painting the bureau. Their home had both easy access to the centre of Toulouse and nature nearby, and I was always included in family life - going to weekend markets and family outings, Deborah even took me to hospital when I was unwell! The whole family is incredibly kind and very funny; thank you so much!

I spend two and a half months with Anneli and her Family and I loved it. We clicked right from the start and had many wonderful talks, while taking nice walks together or just spending some nice hours in each others company. We planned many nice things together, for example she showed me different parts of the area around Arendal, like Lillesand and she also took me to see Kristiansand. On most days I would help Anneli prepare the meals, which, I have to confess, were extremely delicious. My tasks were mostly to clean around the house, feed the cats, help with the kids(diving to school and kindergarten)and driving Anneli. Sometimes we also had some projects I helped with, Washing the house from the outside or helping clean stuff out. Depending on what she had planned. But we also spend time just learning how painting together or we started to watch a series together, to which we got a little addicted 😂Sometimes I stayed a few days alone with Hendrix, while Anneli had to go somewhere and we got along pretty good. He is an amazing kid to talk to (for example we talked about Anime’s or some games he likes to play and lots of other stuff we were interested in) and he is very good older brother to little Maxine, always helping taking care of her and playing with her. It took Maxine some time to warm up to me, but after that she was a very adorable, cheerful kid with a lot of energy. I also got to experience taking care of Anneli's cats and even seeing one of them getting her kittens, it was truly an amazing experience. Anneli made me feel like I was a part of the family and always had advice for me when I needed help or when I wanted to be braver to do stuff, she was the always the first to tell me that I can do it and everything will go well. It was really an amazing time for me and I am happy I got the chance to stay with Anneli, Hendrix and Maxine.

Our experience with Judith, Jan, Lua and Davi was short but absolutely amazing! We stayed in their beautiful tiny house in their own piece of forest, with a nearby lake and a self-made dock built by Jan. That alone is already worth 5 stars. On top of that, they are such a wonderful family. Jan is the hardworking builder (we helped him make a yurt in the garden). Judith with her focus on mindfulness, yoga and health. Lua is always excited to play with you (by the way, don’t play Memory with her — you don’t stand a chance!). And last but not least, Davi, who seems like a little mastermind who knows exactly how to be cute and get everyone’s attention. They are all so open-minded and welcoming. Unfortunately, we could only stay for about two weeks, which was way too short! Thank you again to this wonderful family in beautiful Sweden. Much love, zushua

We had a wonderful experience with Selina. She is a very pleasant person with many talents (she plays piano!), and was a joy to host. Selina integrated herself very quickly with the volunteers who were already here, on a social and community level, and was easy to work with. She brought her camera and took excellent photos for our social media account to document a large outdoor project, and supported another volunteer on a video editing project. She worked as an all around helper with various tasks - from laundry, to kitchen, cleaning and removing debris, and DIY (sanding and painting). Selina is an excellent volunteer who is unafraid to take on new challenges. She integrates herself fully and commits herself fully to her assignments. We are honored to have had her stay with us and hope she will return for a visit!

I spent a week with Fouad and it was a great experience. The place is very peaceful and beautiful, with an amazing view. The phone signal is weak, but the Wi-Fi works well enough. My work was helping Fouad with meal preparation, some painting and light cleaning, all very easygoing. Fouad is funny, kind and an excellent cook. We spent the days doing a bit of something different every hour. Thank you for the warm hospitality, Fouad.

For anyone considering staying with this family: don’t hesitate. You will find a real home. I stayed with Sara, Roland and their wonderful family for one month, and it is an experience I will carry with me for a very long time. From the very first moment, I felt not like a guest, but more like a member of the family. I honestly don’t think I could have found better hosts. During my stay, I helped with basic cleaning such as vacuuming, dusting and tidying up, and I also cooked for the family, something I genuinely enjoy. Sharing meals together quickly became one of my favourite parts of the day: cosy breakfasts with the grandmother, delicious homemade dishes, and even traditional Christmas village meals with the family and the community made me feel completely embraced. And of course, one thing that could never be missed was arts and crafts and the games especially UNO! I absolutely loved playing with the kids. Those moments were full of laughter, fun and connection. They included me in their daily life so naturally that it often felt as if I had always been there. They took me along to family activities they had no obligation to invite me to, yet they always did. Those small gestures made me feel welcome, appreciated and truly at home, whether we were working together, chatting around the table, or simply enjoying the peaceful beauty of their surroundings. The landscape around their home was breathtaking. I went on many hikes, visited nearby cities, and even explored chocolate factories. They always helped me find the best routes and options to get everywhere, making every outing easy and enjoyable. The rhythm of family life and the constant sense of belonging made my stay truly unforgettable. I left with deep nostalgia and gratitude, and I already miss them. I sincerely hope our paths will cross again one day.

It was a delight to host Aelin. She was a very considerate and thoughtful house guest, and a really great worker. She washed windows, cleaned, cooked yummy vegetarian meals, and did so much in the garden, including a 'makeover' of my chicken enclosure - which I'm wrapt with, and designed a wonderful biodiversity sign for me. Aelin was very self sufficient and happy to explore our coastal area in her down time. I really enjoyed our many chats over cups of tea or while weeding the garden , and love that Aelin is very connected to nature, socially, politically and environmentally aware and aiming to live in synch with her values. I would have happily hosted her for longer. Aslan will miss her too.

If you would like the experience of staying in a small village, meeting some of the kindest people, some of which keep to traditions that have been passed down through their families, enjoy the peacefulness and beauty of the Hills and Mountains surrounding then this just might be for you! After talking with Yvonne on FaceTime I just knew this was going to be a good fit! Yvonne is one of the kindest, friendliest and sweetest people I have met on this journey. We had many wonderful conversations, some good laughter & enjoyed watching some movies together with the fire going on chilly nights. Yvonne was so welcoming and generous with her time, making sure I always had enough to eat and was comfortable. The bedroom had plenty of space to hang a few things up, a desk with a few dressers and a comfortable bed. I shared the bathroom which is in between the 2 bedrooms. The shower is nice and hot. We enjoyed spending the day together out and about whether it was to run errands or to see a piece of history. I enjoyed very much working in Yvonne‘s garden. Getting bushes, vines and trees trimmed back. There was so much overgrowth, but when we were done after three weeks, the garden is looking so lovely. 😍 I was also so happy to help get her shower redone. I used the power sander to prep, painted the base coat ( Yvonne painted the top coat) stripped the old caulking off, cleaned the top area of the tub then applied new caulking. It really turned out nice and I was so happy to get that project done for her. Since the weather was getting chilly, I didn’t mind at all to help load firewood from outside into her wood box next to the fireplace in the house. Anything to help! Yvonne and I enjoyed very much cooking together and coming up with different meals. It was a little bit of adventure some days but it was definitely fun! 🤩 Yvonne even taught me how to make homemade tiramisu!😋 Her dog Max is such a little character. I miss him so much! We played a lot, he would follow me around and even got up on my bed . He doesn’t shed so I didn’t mind that at all. Staying in Valva, was one of the biggest highlights of my trip. I will very much cherish my time there and certainly hope to make it back some day. I can’t imagine or even fathom not getting to spend time with Yvonne and close friends nearby again. Thank you so much Yvonne for your time and sweet friendship! 🤗

I stayed at the farm with the family for one month in November 2025. They always treated me very kindly and were welcoming. I mostly worked with the two youngest children, which I really enjoyed. They don’t really speak English yet, so communicating was a bit difficult at times. But they were very open and always helped me, showing me how to do things correctly whenever I didn’t understand something. The owner, his wife, and the two oldest children speak English quite well, and I was able to learn a lot about traditional Japanese life from them. But there are a few things you should know before applying: the lifestyle on this farm is very simple. They don’t have a toilet, they mainly eat what they harvest, there is limited hot water, and since the farm is surrounded by forest, the internet connection is not very strong. There is also quite a lot of work to do because the family is self-sufficient, so you won’t have a lot of free time. The day usually started around 7 a.m. with some green tea. We had breakfast at 9 a.m. and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. we worked in the fields. After lunch, we continued working from 2 p.m. until around 5 p.m. Since I stayed there in November, it was already dark by then, and because they live in complete isolation, there isn’t much to do in the evenings. We had dinner at 7 p.m. If you plan to stay during the winter season, you should be comfortable with the cold, as there is no heating or stove in the house where you stay. For me, it was a very interesting experience because their lifestyle is so different from my own. I was able to learn many things there, and I even took some of these learnings with me into my own life. This family is a great place to stay if you are comfortable with the things I mentioned and if you want to learn, for example, about traditional Japanese lifestyle, Buddhism or Chinese medicine.

Aiham and Basak are trully a joy to have around. Committed, responsible, caring. If they don't know something they ask and learn fast. Their attitude is amazing; always positive an willing to help. The only pity is that they weren't with us for a longer time. They are also really good with people and creating a good atmosphere. Nothing but good words for them.

Dennis was fun to have around for three weeks. He has worked hard on some very physical projects (concreting, trimming trees, oiling the deck and often in the hot temperatures which we have experienced this November in Christchurch. He was friendly helpful and tidy . I would recommend him for further workaways.
