Description
Greetings all!
This would be for all around ranch work, with the main focus to be helping out for the haying season. If you are a rider, it certainly means plenty of that as well, though it won't be first priority for you. If you are not a rider, there is still plenty to do. :)
This is a paid position and as we have qualified for some help with funding, we would ideally be looking for a Canadian (as that is part of the funding requirement.) Please be in touch though, even if you hold a different passport (but a valid work visa) as the position does need to be be filled regardless.
About us:
We are a family ranch in a remote area of British Columbia. We run a 600 head commercial cow/calf operation (calving out 450 this year) and have about 25 head of horses (give or take a few).
We start calving at the beginning of March, do a pile of range riding in May and June. Along with the range riding, we offer guided rides (hourly, daily or overnight trips) for the local youth during the summer months. We start haying around mid July. We have our cattle rounded up and calves sold at the end of October.
Our horses are gently started and then learn as they go on the ranch and in the mountains. The majority of them have never seen an arena. They are almost all out during the winter as we really don't start riding until the end of April or so. We have always had luck with those with previous agriculture experience, but it isn't really necessary. A conscientious attitude and a great work ethic gets anyone by.
Most importantly, you must be easy going and adaptable, as every day can bring a new challenge. If you need 'routine' in your life, our ranch may not be the place for you. :) What you will be helping with will change with the days and the seasons. There are no set rules or hours, you'll just hang out and work with us, side by each, for all aspects of ranch life. That will include both outside and inside work.....from helping prepare dinner and sweeping a floor to various outdoor chores, fencing and moving cows.....all depends on the season, your abilities and what is happening at that time. Trust me, ranching is not as romantic as the movies make it look. Unfortunately, it's not all 'riding into the sunset'.....someone still has to cook dinner, wash the dishes and shovel barn pens in real life! :P
We very rarely take people for less than 2 months, or often a 'season', such as calving season or haying season. It is a long way here from anywhere, and our ranch life does not provide an easy routine to just step in and out of, especially during our busy times. 🙃
So if you are looking for a new challenge, drop us a line! I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.
Cheers all and best of luck!

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We offer a simple, hardworking Canadian lifestyle. In our remote location, the basics are what count and frills, gimmicks and bling are left behind. You will instantly become part of our family and we are well used to, and enjoy having new faces at our table. The skills you will learn are 100% hands on, and change with the seasons. Safety is our first priority and we expect to train and guide you. Our food is relatively simple "meat and potatoes style" and you'll never leave the family table hungry. In fact, best bring your stretchy pants. lol

Help
I hope I've covered most everything in the above summary, but would be happy to answer any questions.
The work will vary with the seasons and the most current project. It could be anything from renovations to driving a dump truck to helping check cattle. All in all I can promise a variety of experiences. 😊Languages spoken
English: Fluent
Accommodation
In your own room in a large cabin. Cabin has washroom facilities and internet access. Meals are eaten in the main house.
What else ...
Please note that we are quite isolated and are four hours away from shopping malls, movies theatres, or Tim Hortons. We did very recently get cell service, which is very spotty at the ranch. We live 'off the grid'. The town we live near is very small, but the people are hard working and genuine.
