About us:
We like to go with the flow day-to-day. We get up anywhere from 6-9am (depending on the season) and I work online from home in the education field. During the school year, in the later mornings, we homeschool and/or do errands. In the afternoons/evenings, we like to have another kid over to play, do projects around the house, host taco nights or attend dance lessons. We also have a female roommate who works in education as well.
Our small dog "Panda" is very sweet and active. We have a 15 year old indoor/outdoor cat "Taizo", 4 hens named "Grit," "Banana," "Little Henrietta," and "Gertrude," a sulcutta tortoise named "Homer", 3 fish tanks, a small pond and 2 sweet and silly guinea pigs called "Lava Tube" and "Coconut."
A great workaway match would be someone who loves kids and animals and is laid-back like us.Types of help and learning opportunities

Kauai is a beautiful place and brings out the ALOHA in people. We'd love to serve as your local "ohana," (family) while you're here. Before we moved to Kauai 14 years ago, we visited and always appreciated the local hospitality and want to return that to our workaway guests to make it the most fun and memorable experience for them as possible.
We love getting to know the world through YOU and having you be a part of our story. I love the way the world opens up through meeting workawayers and the value it brings to my daughter's early life experience to share with people from around the world.
You will see how a local family lives and thrives here and will hopefully feel relaxed and grounded getting to stay in our home with us. So far we have met people from Poland, England, Germany, Netherlands, France and many states in USA including Tennessee, Florida, Nevada and Texas and others that I'm forgetting at the moment. We are so grateful for all of our workawayers and this program. MAHALO (thank you!)Projects involving children

Help
About the Workaway tasks:
A good fit would be someone who has experience taking care of a home, is able to look at a dirty space and feel confident to clean it, and/or motivation to learn and do cleaning and DIY projects. Ideally, you are confident about figuring things out or asking questions to get clarification.
As an example, I might ask for the 3 hours to be spent 'deep-cleaning the kitchen' and I would like for the workaway-er to be able to look at the kitchen and manage her time so that she is able to figure out how to do maximum cleaning within that time. I will offer suggestions such as clean top to bottom, exterior to interior surfaces, clean out toaster and fridge and all appliances and walls. What wouldn't be ideal in this scenario is if she just wiped off counters and said she was done and she was ready for another task. In this case, I will need to provide more direction. It is fine if that is required but it is very helpful if you have some ideas too or experience with cleaning.
For January and February, I am wanting help with deep cleaning and yard projects such as weeding, clearing and landscaping. Indoor projects might also include scrubbing baseboards and walls, emptying and cleaning cabinets, and deep cleaning rooms, top to bottom. I might ask to vacuum and polish the wood floors, clean the fans, dust the shelves. There will probably be outdoor weeding, pruning trees, clearing a fence line and mowing the yard.
For March, I am planning some bigger home improvement projects that might include sanding down and re-oiling a table, repainting a wall, sanding and re-finishing a countertop and maybe even the shower. Some of the projects I have in mind are completely new to me as well so we'll be learning together. It may be tedious work, such as sanding and painting surfaces many times and needing to be very attentive to details.
Workawayers usually prefer to do their trade early in the mornings, if they have adventures planned later, or just because it can get hot outside. Another great time to do worktrade is after 3pm when it starts to cool down again. We are flexible on the days and times for the most part and we will figure it out together when you are here, and on a day-by-day basis. (There may be occasions where I will need help on a specific day and time and I’ll communicate that in advance and we’ll see if that will work for you as well.)
When you arrive, I'll share a list of house rules. Each day I'll have a list of work trade tasks. You'll let me know when you're ready to get started for the day and I'll go over them with you. If you want, we can go over the list the night before so you can know whether the work will be in the yard or inside or both and can make a game plan for yourself.
15 hours/week. Workawayer provides own food.
I also provide a list of 'check-out' type things to do on the day you leave. These include things like cleaning the shared bathroom (which you can also do the day prior and account for worktrade time) and washing, drying and folding the linens used during your stay, etc.Languages

You will be able to sleep on a floor mat or a bed in my daughter's room. (My daughter will sleep in my room while you're here but she will need access to her room daily to get her clothes, hang out with her friends, etc). There is a shared bathroom with our housemate, and any friends we have over. This is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath/shower house. The third bedroom is used by our female roommate.
This would be a good fit for a clean and tidy, experienced, independent traveler who is minimalist packer as you won't have much space to spread your things out. We usually go to bed about 8 or 9pm so the living room would be all yours after that.
You are welcome to travel with us when we go out and about but you won't want to depend on us for getting around as we spend a lot of time at home, especially during the school day. However, some workawayers have been completely content to hang out at our home with us most of the time, rather than going out. That is fine too. "-)
We are a short walk from a bus stop for the KAPAHI SHUTTLE ROUTE 60. It will take you into Kapaa where you can shop for groceries at HOKU (local store, organic) or BIG SAVE (a further walk but cheaper) or find a connecting bus taking you north or south. There is the Kapahi Food Mart within walking distance that has ready-made snacks if you prefer.
You'll be able to store dry goods on top of the fridge and use about a 1/2 of shelf in the fridge.
There is a gym within walking distance from our house where you can get a pass, if you're interested. We are also a 3-5 minute walk to the Route 60 bus stop or a 45 minute walk to the beach or town of Kapa'a.
A few workawayers have rented cars which would allow you to see the maximum number of things (Waimea Canyon and Kokee, many more beaches). "Rent-A-Wreck" or Turo might be a good affordable option for a car rental. If you're not able to rent a car though, you can still see about 20% of the island from the bus (Hanalei Bay, Kealia, Hoopii Falls, NaPali Coast with a pass reserved in advance plus bus and shuttle reservation) which in my opinion is enough to see something beautiful everyday.
Some workawayers are content to just relax with us at home and to go out occasionally. Others aim to see as much as possible. One workaway did a helicopter tour and felt like she saw it all. One workaway met friends while here through an app called BUMBLE BFF and they had adventures together.
Please arrange for your own transportation to/from the airport. I am told the bus will go to the airport and Turo car rentals and rent-a-wreck also provide a shuttle from the airport. If you are traveling during a busy time, you can probably get an UBER driver to take you to our home if you don't want to take the bus. Most workawayers end up taking an UBER, just for the convenience.
No smoking or drinking is permitted anywhere on or around the property please. What else ...
You will have access to Wifi but we don't have TV. We do stream movies/Youtube on our computer sometimes and you'd be welcome to join us.
People on Kauai tend to go to bed early and get up early, going with the natural flow of daylight and making the most of hours at the beach in the sun. There isn't much 'night life' here unless you're at a bon fire party on the beach.
I look forward to meeting you.A little more information
