    Description

We are a family of four. Becky and Kilian and our daughters Zoe (11) and Bea (8). Fiona (18) is also staying with us this year as an au-pair. We live on a small hill farm in the beautiful county Wicklow known as the garden of Ireland. We are quite remote so it is very serene and peaceful and the view is amazing. We speak English and German as well as French. We farm organically and have 12 free range organic pigs as well as 2 horses and 5 cats. We also have a poly tunnel and farm garden where we grow vegetables for our own use and have 4 beehives. Becky works from home and Kilian, when he is not farming, has an additional part time job which calls him away on projects from time to time.
Although we both have day jobs and running the farm at a loss costs us, we believe that what we can grow and raise sustainably can help reduce the load on the planet and if you believe in the same ethos come volunteer

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Apart from learning what life is like on a small farm you will get to improve your English skills and hopefully get to meet people from many countries and cultures. We are curious about the world and hope you are too. If you ever have the ambition to take on a similar farm project, keeping animals or even building your own place you will get an insight into what is involved if you spend some time with us. As we are planting trees and rewilding you can also get insight on how to do your bit for the planet in practical ways. If you are interested in bees and beekeeping there is the possibility of assisting with tem also. Where we live is also close to all that Wicklow has to offer be it golden beaches, endless nature trails or historical sites. Dublin is accessible by bus in 90 minutes meaning that you can see Dublin without having to find expensive accommodation in the city.

    Help

We are looking for you to help on the farm, feeding the pigs and helping to build fences to manage where they roam free. There are also lots of other projects on the go like repairing ancient stone walls and small building projects. If you want to learn how to be a capable do it yourself person you can learn the skills here of things like mixing concrete, laying blocks, timberwork and carpentry. We are looking for people who wish to stay for at least 4 weeks we are also cool with couples coming to stay so long as they are both helping out. We will teach you how to do these things so if you have a curious mind, are fit and willing to learn you will leave with many new skills. The poly tunnel also needs tending to, harvesting vegetables and fruits as well as weeding. We have planted over 12000 trees and every year we plant more. We would love help in increasing the woodland on our farm. As we aim to make the farm self-sustaining rather than commercial - it is more about making it a better place rather than generating a profit. We are looking for motivated and resilient helpers but we are not looking to exploit you for profit or to have cheap workers. We often have family get-togethers and parties. All our previous farm volunteers have joined in with these events and we hope you will want to do that too. We would like you to work 4/5 hours per day, 5 days per week and in return we offer accommodation and food. We are fairly flexible about timings as long as we count on the work getting done. We appreciate that you are also trying to experience Ireland at the same time so we will try to make it work for all.

Helpers have their own living pods in our barn which is adjacent to our house. In the 2 pods there is a high bed and a bed at floor level as well as a desk and shelves for clothes. There is also a fully equipped kitchen with large kitchen table. Adjoining is a bathroom with a shower. Bearing in mind that this is a shed all is rudimentary but it is adequate. We have fast internet and digital nomads should have no problem. Each pod can sleep up to 2 but normally 1 person to a pod. We also have a caravan with the same sleeping arrangement next to the shed and that might suit some people better and is an option.
We provide all your food and do a weekly shop for provisions which you cook yourself or as a group. At least once a week we all eat together in the house and weather permitting also bbq or cook pizzas in our outdoor oven.
It should be noted that while we are very tolerant of peoples preferences one thing we can not permit is smoking in our shed/pods/kitchen because of the fire risk - if that rule was broken you will be asked to leave.
