Description
Hello from Haven!
UPDATE Nov 14: We are sealed in, more or less, with a woodstove going and the interior plaster drying nicely.
CURRENT TASKS: Tile floors, Painting with natural paint, carpentry tasks, plumbing.
Here at the Haven acre in 2023, we are reno-ing our small cabin into a slightly larger hempcrete and stickframe build this summer. If you're interested in building skills please do reach out! From beginner to advanced skill levels, we welcome you. There will also be some opportunities to participate in gardening and cooking. Perhaps you will even inspire some projects of your own!
Haven is a part of a queer and trans friendly Land Co-operative that is located just outside Nelson in beautiful southern BC, in traditional Sinixt territory. The land is home to an array of diverse and interesting folk including LGBTQ+ and polyamorous members. Haven is nestled in the heart of the community and is home to Em, DaMo, and Tencza (9).
I (Em) am a food activist, passionate about the local foodshed and creating resilient food systems. Some of my endeavours include permaculture gardening and food forestry for both food and medicine, fermenting everything, animal slaughter and butchery, wildcrafting and herbalism. I hope to raise animals here again one day, and have kept bees, chickens, and pigs at different times.
Damo is a jack of all trades. They are a trained chef and have skills in carpentry, timber framing, stonework, and many other practical pursuits. Creatively they are inspired by photography and can often be seen following their lens.
Tencza is a curious light-being who is sure to befriend you. She is often working alongside us (and you!), following her own creative ideas :) Her enthusiasm is contagious.
We live in community on 88 acres of mostly forested land, a rural wild mountainscape and are off-grid on microhydro. Bird Creek (Chiweha Sk'kaka) provides us clean, fresh water and reliable power. Being off-grid allows us to more intimately understand how we consume power in our lives and has led us to a simple and ecological way of using electricity.
There are Other workaway hosts on our co-operative too:

We provide an experience to our volunteers. Offgrid, minimalist living in a rural-wild setting. We are a gender & lifestyle positive community, open to diversity and approaching this life with a down-to-earth realism, grounded in how things actually work (and don't) and evolving from there :) If this is an experience you are interested in, please join us!

We use humanure bucket toilets and live mostly outside :) However, you will be extremely well fed! Eat 'til your fullest potential!
