Description
We, Carol and Rick, are a Dominican/American couple, living in a lush garden in Belles; in the center of the island in the parish of Saint Joseph. On our small farm, located right next to the Laurent River, we are taking care of a herd of goats, as well as harvesting all the fruits growing on the property. On the grounds, you will also find a few tortoises as well as a lot of herbs and flowers.
While staying with us, you will mainly be supporting Carol in her daily care of the animals (feeding the goats), as well as help in the garden. Some small works such as painting around the house or helping with cooking could also be on the menu depending on the needs.
The farm is close to the entrance of the Jacko Flats and Jacko steps, and can be reached easily in 30 minutes by bus (Marigot bus stop) or hitchhike from Roseau. We are about 20 minutes from Jacko Falls and Spanny Falls. A little bit further you will be able to visit the Emerald Pool, or you could hike segment 4 or 5 (or both!) of the Waitukubuli Trail.
If you wish to stay with us, you will sleep in our small wooden cottage, with a bathroom just outside and shower by the main house or in the river. We will provide you with meals made with local produce, most of them directly from the garden. There is Wi-Fi available and electricity.
We need help for 6 days a week not 5 because we have to cut and carry grass for the goats who eat all the time.
We want everyone to be aware and be happy.Types of help and learning opportunities

As you will spend most of your time working with Carol, you’ll have a lot of time to ask her about Dominican agricultural practices as well as medicinal herbs. She can also teach you the best tricks for cooking dasheen or other root vegetables you've never heard of before..
Help
We will expect you to help for 5 hours, preferably in the morning and late afternoon to help with goat feeding, however we are very flexible and it can be discussed on a daily basis. If you have any specific skills such as brush cutting, weeding, pruning plants or painting, we will find plenty of tasks for you!

She's a beautiful person and very tidy and respectful.
She was willing to learn and picked up things quickly.
She was delightful and we would have her anytime.
Also, the dug holes for planting bananas, removed banana suckers and trimmed them and carried goat manure up to the garden.
They were willing to learn because it was new to them.

He helped with drainage around the goat sheds, cutting trees that were overgrown, carrying heavy bags and cutting and carrying grass for the goats.
He also helped with processing cocoa and washing the dishes and was very tidy.
It was nice to have his help.
Carol also taught me a lot about the plants and fruits in the garden, medicinal plants, herbal infusion, how to make cocoa, etc.
I had my own accommodation and the schedule and workflow… read more
