Beschreibung
My name is Baiba. I am a 35 years (on 2023) young woman from Latvia. Already some years ago I chose to be a self-employed so that I have time to try my different interests. Yes, I am from those who have many interests and during years they change. I like diversity, I am curious if something catches my attention. I am extravert and also introvert. At some moments I like to meet and talk with people, especially about different life experiences or something I am interested in. On other moments I prefer to be alone. Already some years my dream has been to travel, live in different countries, experience different cultures. That is one of the reasons, why I chose workaway – I like not traditional tourist experience and also workaway helps to interact more deeply with local people, culture, real life in country. Let’s say I like to explore life and world. As I wrote, I have many interests and they change, but at the moment I am still interested in nature, especially mountains, bogs or diverse biotopes. Of course, traveling also is my thing. I like to take photos, mostly of landscapes, wildlife, interesting objects and macro photography. I like to teach others what I know. I am definitely interested in mysterious part of our world – I am interested in many things connected with spirituality (not classical religions), extrasensory, personal development, for example astrology, psychology, extrasensory, different therapies, reincarnation, souls, different dimensions, meditation, thought power… I like to hike, swim, roller skate. Sometimes I just love to watch movies or play some games. As a self-employed person last 6 years I have been giving astrology consultations, organizing and guiding hikes in Latvia for locals and excursions for foreigners in Riga. Also, time by time I am taking photos of some events. And last but least I am a guide of soul journeys (reincarnationology) to past lives, to space between lives, to alternative future options etc. Before all this I got master’s degree in biology and worked in science as a researcher mostly in agriculture entomology (about insects). I also have volunteering experience. I have been a volunteer photographer in several events (music festivals, Riga international Film festival, fashion shows etc.), assistant to Finnish team in International Workers & Amateurs Sports Games in Riga, volunteer in protected natural meadow management, volunteer of different works during Agros Rose festival in Cyprus (for one month), volunteer editor of children and youth newspaper etc. Already some years I have hosted people from all world at my home from couchsurfing platform. I am really curios to try different things in my life, to learn new skills and share knowledge, skills and experience I already have.

1. IN HOUSE / HOME:
As many years I have lived alone, I can clean home and order things there, including dusting, washing windows, bathroom, dishes and other things. Actually, I am a bit pedantic. Of course, I can do laundry, repair some simple things. I also have some experience in painting, for example walls, garage doors etc. I am also cooking my meals. I haven’t cooked sea food as I don’t eat it, haven’t cooked most of read meats, because for me it’s hard to take read meat in hands (can use some tools) even if I have grown up with wild animal meat.
2. COUNTRYSIDE:
In childhood several summers I spent with my grandparents and aunt in countryside. So different works around house are not new for me and I am not afraid of them. I have cut grass, weeded different crops, collected vegetables (potatoes, cabbages, onions, garlics etc.) and herb and tea plants (linden flowers, cowslips, peppermints, yarrows, etc.), picked fruits (cherries, plums, apples, pears) and berries (gooseberries, strawberries, red and blackcurrants and other berries at the garden and lingonberries, cranberries, bilberries in forests). I also have some experience picking mushrooms in forests (Latvians love to do that). I have some experience in sowing and planting. I have cut branches of trees, dug soil with shovel, raked leaves, grass, hey. I even have turned around hey that it can dry and collected it for winter. I have fed chickens, ducks, rabbits, pigs. I have ordered firewood in wood-shed for winter. I have participated in pressing juice from apples and pears, in making sour cabbages. In Cyprus in volunteering project I have collected rose flowers for making rose water. In Cyprus and in Skopelos island (Greece) I participated in cleaning and maintaining mountain hiking trails. Probably I have also other countryside experience, that I even don’t remember.
3. CONNECTED WITH BIOLOGY AND SCIENCE:
I have bachelor and master’s degree in biology which covers basic knowledge of any biology topic, but deeper knowledge I have in so called green biology (zoology, entomology, ecology, botany, hydrobiology, ethology, management and protection of protected territories for example Natura 2000, etc.). Many years I worked as researcher in scientific institution (agriculture plant protection) and I was involved in entomology group. In this job I worked on field (different crops), in laboratory and in office. My duties included insecticide trials, collecting and counting insects and plants, evaluating damage to crops, identify species, data collection and analysis, writing reports and articles, presenting results, planning of trials and schedule, managing research projects, communication with partner scientists, educating farmers, etc. I even have written many popular science articles about agriculture entomology for many journals. Very short term I tried to be a biology and nature sciences teacher in primary and secondary school, but that format of teaching wasn’t for me.
4. PHOTOGRAPHY, COMPUTERS, TECHNICAL:
I have studied in professional photography school. So, I have photography skills and basic photo editing (mostly I use Lightroom) skills. I can teach basics of photography, composition. I have created my own home page based on wordpress platform and I have basic understanding of html programming language (had to learn basics of it in university). I have attended digital marketing courses and I have basic skills in marketing. I own two Facebook groups and three Facebook pages, so I have some knowledge also in this field. I learn pretty fast and mostly computer is my friend not enemy, so I can help with different computer skills, but I am not IT specialist.
5. SPIRITUALITY, ESOTERIC:
I am certified astrology and reincarnationology consultant. I have guided many meditations. As I have attended many esoteric courses, I have basic knowledge and skills in/about Zhong Juan Qigong, aroma and color therapy, Tarot cards, Vastu Shastra, extrasensory, aura and chakras, psychology, energetic healing, etc.
6. TOURISM, HOSPITALITY:
I have attended different tourism and guide courses. I have experience and skills in planning, organizing hikes, excursions, guiding them (during hikes I use also my biology knowledge). I am pretty good at different map reading and orienteering according maps. Camping also is familiar to me. Already several years I have hosted travelers from couchsurfing platform at my home, so people from many countries of world have been at my home. Three weeks I volunteered in Morocco Family Guest House where I did cleaning, ckecked-in guests, helped with breakfast and dinner, improved management system of rooms and new guests.
7. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
From physical activities I would like to point out ice skating, roller skating, swimming, riding a bike, paddling, sup boarding and some others where I have skills. Of course, in school I learnt different team games like soccer, but I need to refresh rules.
8. LANGUAGES:
Latvian (birth language, fluent), English (fluent), Russian (intermediate: can understand most, can read, can talk just a bit, can’t write), Spanish (beginner: started to learn in September 2023, few minutes every day), German (beginner: started to learn in March 2024, few minutes every day).
9. OTHER:
I am pretty good at listening when it is necessary, I am able to accepting and understanding of different cultures, mentalities, I can adapt pretty easy, I am fast learner, I have logical thinking, I can be logical and creative in problem solving.

Vom Workawayer (Baiba) für Host (Living in a Moroccain guest ...)

Ahmed and all his family were my third Workaway host, but second as solo traveler. I stayed there 3 weeks as I promised to host before going to the project. As… read more everywhere, where people are involved, there were minuses and also a lot of pluses. When I came, host Ahmed was on vacation, my first week there was without him, but there were other volunteers, Ahmed’s mother, cousin Bozid and friend Yassine. Other volunteers, especially one, were those who showed me what needs to be done and how they do it. If you (a future volunteer here) expect that host will show you what are his expectations, how things in the house should be done, don’t expect that (he believes that that other volunteers have to do it). In this guest house other volunteers show you that and I also showed everything to the new volunteers who came (even when host was back from vacation). Unfortunately, this can cause misunderstandings and some other problems in the communication with host (just because don’t know the hosts expectations). As in my opinion many things were a bit chaotic, when I came, I started to improve them to make the work easier. I made order in the shelves where all the different mattress covers, sheets, pillowcases, towels and other things were kept. I also made labels for those shelves that further everyone knows where to put things and where are single or double mattress covers, towels for guests, other towels and everything else. More importantly I created for the guest house simple Google Sheets document, where we started to write necessary information about guests, check-ins, check-outs, which rooms and when are taken, everything about money and other things. Before this document guest house didn’t have any system how to manage information, so of course it was a bit chaotic, hard to remember information, which guest paid, which didn’t, which room or bed has to be cleaned, which not. I am happy that Ahmed found this document useful, because for us volunteers definitely it made life easier. I hope that this document is still in use or has been improved after I left. In general, I think that my cleanness and order standards are higher than they are in this guest house, so time by time I did some more work than that what other volunteers showed me when I came.

So, what were the main tasks in the guest house? More or less, those were the things that are written in the project description or in the file that Ahmed sends you before coming (if he sends it). We volunteers had to clean the rooms, common rooms, toilets, terraces; do the laundry, dry and fold it; we cooked (not in the first week, when I came) and served breakfast for guests; helped to serve dinner and cleaned after it; welcomed the new guests and showed them around; collected money from guests if they had to pay something, also we had to follow the information who has to pay, how much (here the Google Sheet document was very useful); and some other minor things. Ahmed is not doing previously mentioned tasks, he manages information in booking platforms, communicates with guests, adds the new information about new guests in Google Sheet document, helps with dinner, organizes trips, if guests ask some. Working hours here are not counted, but that already is written in the profile and I already knew that. For us volunteers the amount of work was dependent from that: how many volunteers are there, how many guests and new check-ins are on exact day. Normally there are 3 volunteers, but at some point, we were 4 and at some only 2. Volunteers between themselves decide when each will take free day or afternoon. I was enough lucky with other volunteers – we had good communication and we worked together well. With Ahmed we had some difficulties in communication, but at the end the problems or misunderstandings were solved. Ahmed’s mother cooks really tasty Moroccan dinners – I was able to try many traditional foods. Bozid in my opinion is nice and reliable, knows, how to work together with others. He always operatively organized taxi for guests or helped with other things. Yassine during the day has his own job, but when he was in the guest house, he helped where it was necessary. He is very kind, friendly, caring, with good taste of humor, and I would say pretty good and logical in fixing things. Guests in this guest house also mostly were nice, friendly. With few guests in my free time, we hiked together, walked around the city, visited Paradise valley etc.

So, my experience in this guest house was very intense, but overall good. Thanks to everyone in the house and to every guest for this experience.
