Description

Update 9 Jan 2012. We are urgently looking for volunteers to help us plant grass from now until the end of the rainy season in March. We welcome last minute volunteers, so if you are at a loose end get in touch!

Ed and June are building a Hacienda, , using stones from the land and earth to make adobe bricks, in the beautiful countryside 20 minutes from Sucre, Bolivia. The land measures 10.5 acres and has 360 degree views of the Andean mountains. Check out our photo album.

We have almost finished constructing our contemporary home, the Roundhouse, which will also be shared with paying guests. We are now focusing on landscaping and planting the large garden around the Roundhouse. Plans for next year include building separate adobe guest bungalows, major tree planting and creating an organic vegetable garden.

When our business is generating, income we want to contribute to those less fortunate than ourselves who are living in Bolivia. We have set up an NGO and registered charity which is aimed at improving prospects principally for young people and children in local communities, through education and training.

We enjoy all year round temperatures of around 23C although it feels warmer in the high altitude sun. Nights are cooler, but only cold in June, July and August.

Our pets are brother and sister siamese kittens and 2 adopted rescue dogs. We have 6 laying hens, and a rooster.

Work

Minimum stay 2 weeks. We particularly welcome long term volunteers.

Our ideal volunteers are physically fit, ready to tackle anything that needs doing, listen to what is required of them and do it without permanent supervision. We love enthusiastic, creative and responsible workers who show initiative.

We are looking for volunteers to help us landscape our garden. Work will include clearing land, making dry-stone walls, mixing earth, planting and watering. Also bush clearing the remainder of our land so that we can plant trees. Lime-washing the rendered adobe walls is also on our list of tasks.

We expect our volunteers to help out with cooking their meals and keeping their living spaces clean and tidy.

We are also looking for a couple with experience in hotel/restaurant work to help us run our business long term. You will need to apply for temporary residency once you are in Bolivia which will cost approx £250 per year. All board and lodging will be provided by us plus a small personal allowance.

Accommodation

Depending on how many volunteers we have at one time, there is the possibility of having indoor accommodation. Otherwise we have tents with mattresses, sleeping bags, pillows and blankets, so nice and cosy! We have a bathroom with hot showers for use by our volunteers as well as a fully functioning kitchen. We have a communal main meal every day, usually at lunchtime.

What else ...

We have a 17 metre swimming pool.

There are beautiful walks from our property with stunning views of the Andes mountains.

The beautiful colonial city of Sucre (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is accessible by regular daytime mini buses, stopping a 10 minute walk from our property. There are plenty of museums, bars and restaurants and some interesting nightclubs should you wish to stay in Sucre on your days off. Potosi, the highest city in the world, is a 3 hour bus ride where you can take a mine tour and visit the Money Museum. Tarabuco is a small rural town with an indigenous market every Sunday - a good place to buy weavings and other souvenirs.
