Description

We (being Lisa myself, Ewen my partner, Reuben my 17 year son, Zoé my 13 year daughter) have taken on this beautiful & wild wooded land which has not been lived on for maybe 30 years. I wish to renovate a cob & oak 3 roomed cottage, clear fallen trees, grow vegetables, have horse & cart (we have this now), build animal housing, have bees, make fences, plant hedges, harvest fruit, sit & enjoy, share the space, learn & teach and that will do to start as the list is endless. We have been volunteers ourselves & have done some hosting of various sorts. Staying with us will be primative, comfortable, well fed & hopefully interesting & fun!

Work

When answering please detail any skills in the gardening/natural building/animal husbandary/cooking&preserving areas you have, also what things you are interested in doing while here. I have some knowledge in some areas of my wish list but much more to learn, it is all very exciting!I would also like to do some projects with the village children.

The priority from March is renovating the cottage, preparing the vegetable gardens, cutting the years firewood out, sowing Alfalfa for the horse & foal, getting to know the foal and clearing the orchard.

Zoé & Reuben are part-timers in Ireland & Bulgaria.

Accommodation

We have 3 single beds for volunteers, 1 in a separate room and 2 in another room. We also have 2 small tents and 2 sleeping bags. Accomodation is on a first booked first served basis (unless you really wish to camp of course).

What else ...

We had a 2 acre small holding in Ireland up until 2004. There we had goats, chickens, vegetables & fruit. I made yogurt & cheese, baked and preserved. We have often lived without transport, using feet, bicycles & hitching. Since leaving there we have worked and looked after other peoples farms/smallholdings, a couple of times in exchange for accommodation. In 2008 a friend shared their vegetable garden with me so we could increase production, more for everyone by sharing the work. I grew up in a rural area & although my parents did not farm they did grow vegetables and fruit, baked & preserved. I started working on the local farms at age 11 in the summer holidays. Organic farming is natural to me, it what I have always done even when doing other things I have always grown something no matter how small an area.I have always lived in rural areas. I have moved to Bulgaria as I wish to put everything I know together & explore living a very low key life, what is wonderful for me is that most people in the village are living that way & so I am really looking forward to learning from them. From experience I feel it will be easier to live in a basic way when those around you are also doing so. I feel most villagers are proud of what they do & are.
We have been volunteers ourselves several times/places & have done some hosting of various sorts.

Jennifer is great!
She is willing to either give a task her all or ask what is the best way to do something and then try again. She enjoys challenges. And despite having food allergies (disaiwon'tmentiontheword) she is very easy to feed and loves cooking. Jennifer is a very talented & perceptive young lady who is a pleasure to have around and you can talk straight with her, a real bonus.
