Maintenance work and general help needed at Caribbean plantation guesthouse and farm
Country: Saint Lucia
Last Activity: 01/12/2011
Description
Our family has a plantation guesthouse, farm and heritage site on the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia. Balenbouche Estate is a historic property with several old wooden structures, surrounded by gardens, trails, ruins, fruit orchards and secluded beaches. The 75 acre property requires a lot of maintenance, responsibility and hard work. Because general laborers are easy to find and wages are low here, we are looking only for experienced and skilled volunteers who can stay for at least 1 month, in exchange for room and board in the off season anytime between May and November.

Work
Our volunteers generally work for 30 hours a week (flexible times) in exchange for room and board. Help is needed primarily in construction and carpentry (any kind of woodwork), maintenance and repairs (plumbing, electrical, small engine repair etc.), gardening, heavy cleaning, and farming. We are an environmentally conscious business and are also seeking to further implement sustainable practices. Some of the work will also involve cooking, household chores and helping with tourists.

Accommodation
In the summer months, volunteers generally stay one of our guest cottages (which rent for US$ 80 - 140 per day to tourists) and only occasionally, if all cottages are booked, there would be shared accommodation in the main house, but this is usually only the case during our busy winter season.
What else ...
St. Lucia is a beautiful holiday destination and is well serviced by international airlines. As a visitor, you are allowed to stay in the country for 6 weeks, after that you have to request an extension every 4 weeks, which costs US$ 80. We will pay this fee if you volunteer with us, but you are not allowed to work for money on the island. Some nationals also require a visa before traveling to St. Lucia.
